The main role that a coach has to play in a team is being a leader and a role model. Showing the rest of the team what’s to be done and how to do it is be completed. Coach Boone and coach Yoast show this in such a great way. They step up from the rest of the team by making the calls and showing how being a great role mode. Throughout the movie the two coaches are more than just a coach. They are a friend, teacher and motivator. All these things join up and make a great leader. Both coaches are not the same coach as they are all throughout the whole movie. Coach Boone was the ‘intense harsh’ coach. He disciplined his team when they weren’t doing the right thing whether it was at training or off the field. If his team want something, he makes them earn it. ‘A water break? Water is for cowards. Water makes you weak. Water is for washing blood off that uniform and you don't get no blood on my uniform, boy you must be outside your mind! We are going to do up-downs, until Blue is no longer tired, and thirsty’. This is a quote that Coach Boone says to his team when they request for a water break. As you can see he doesn’t give it to them and for asking for it he punishes the whole team. Coach Yeast on the other hand is the ‘nice guy’ coach. He’s a lot different to coach Boone but the two combinations work well together. At one point through the movie coach Boone drags one of his players off because he was playing a bad game. The player was quite upset so coach Yoast went over to him and told him to play on his defensive team because he felt the player needed to chance to prove what type of player he was. The coach’s style was a big part in the Titans championship but the coaches had to have some skills in his book as
In the beginning of the movie, Coach Boone had to build ethos for himself because of racial differences. Coach Boone, being of African American descent, was hired over their current caucasian coach and this caused the white football players to boycott the team until Coach Yoast became their assistant coach. Coach Boone lead his team by example and his dedication to his craft. He showed the players that he did not care about what color you wore on your skin, but of the sport that brought them together. During his speech he states “I don’t care if you like each other or not. But you will respect each other. And maybe, I don’t know, maybe we’ll learn to play this game like men” (Boone). He uses the built trust aspect of ethos very well to close this speech.
Joe Ehrmann describes how he has developed his philosophy of coaching by relating the story of his life in his youth, high school and in college describing two different types of coaches he had played for. The first are coaches who were impersonal, authoritarian, and sometimes abusive which he calls transactional coaches; this is in contrast to the humane coaches he calls transformative coaches. Coaches must face this responsibility because we all remember our coaches. “This is the awesome power and responsibility of coaching: You give your players memories, for better or for worse that stay with them until the day they die” (Ehrmann, 2011 p 46-47). Joe Erhmann goes on to ask, “What is the moral and ethical composition of their program?
However, based on six main traits suggested by Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Moorman & Fetter we can make a conclusion that Yoast wasn’t a transformational leader in the context of the movie. In this particular situation, where coach Boone was a head coach, and Yoast had to accept the rules of the game, he probably could not display his full potential being an assistant coach. So, the question “what if Yoast was a head coach...” is not relevant to the movie current context and will be discussed later.
Having a coach in life will positively influence your character and your skills. Also, having a coach doesn’t necessarily mean that your playing on a field. A coach can be anyone from a role model to a parent or guardian, a teacher, a pastor, a mentor, or sometimes even a best friend. One of the most important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he has on his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the field. This is done by developing the character of his players through encouragement and helping them understand that the game is more than just about winning. A good coach will always put the needs of his players first before he considers himself as a factor. If a coach is successful his players will develop a strong sense of self-motivation. This helps by allowing the player to
Yoast was dedicated to football and had gained loyalty from his team and white community. He was respected and had demonstrated his effective leadership through several wins. He was also nominated for hall of fame for his exceptional leadership. He cared for the people in his team. When he had the opportunity to leave and take up a position for head coach he did not because he was worried about the players in his team. He considered them like his own kids and was concerned for them and did not want to abandon them. He takes the offer of the assistant coach to ensure that his team members are a part of the new team. His initial objective was to ensure that his boys are a part of the team and are well taken care off.
As with most sports teams, the Titans have an autocratic leadership style. Coach Boone is the one and only person who makes the decisions, he is the main man in charge. The style is productive, and the team wins games. Although he has assistant coaches, such as Bill Yoast who is the defensive coordinator, all the decisions must go through Coach Boone first. The democratic leadership style is not applicable on a football team because that’s why teams have coaches. The team does not make group decisions. Coach Boone also uses Job Enlargement in ‘Remember the
Its takes courage, experience and resolve to change roles because of situations, especially if the role is a demotion to a lesser position. In my opinion, the most important part of leadership is interpreting leader-follower-situation and responding efficiently and effectively for the overall good. Coach Yoast was excellent at interpreting situations. His actions and observation skills also facilitated the success of the team racial merger when Gary and Julius came together at football camp. His hesitation to interfere when Gary and Julius initially united on the field, in what initially appeared to be a confrontation, brought the team together. Since Julius and Gary are team leaders informally and formally respectfully, Coach Yoast ability to interoperate the situation and allow them to celebrate brought the team together.
Leadership factors in Remember the Titans - the leaderships styles of coach Boone and coach Yoast were suited to the team and worked well with them. By the end of the film the team had a good relationship with the leaders; coach Boone, coach Yoast and Gerry.
In 1971 Coach Herman Boone replaced a popular, successful white coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, in that community's effort to finally integrate its schools. The school and community were angrily divided by the federal integration order, and the volatility of the situation was heightened by the abrupt demotion of Coach Yoast and Boone's promotion to Head Coach. In this movie Coach Boone is on a mission to try to get the white and black players to unite and play together as a team. He wanted the two races to become a team. Around that time, there was a lot of racism and a lot of schools were segregated, so the players obviously didn't get along with each other at first. A lot changed when Boone replaced Yoast
This offer was very tempting, and I think that this was the moment when Coach Yoast experienced the biggest moral dilemma, whether he should help Boone or not. In the beginning of the movie Yoast was not enthusiastic about the fact that he needs to step down, and give his position to a new black Coach. Despite the skin color, Coach Yoast realized that together with Boone they share one common goal. This goal is to win. Coach Yoast ethical dilemma was decision during the game, whether to be a good leader, help the team and Boone, or to stay quiet and see what happens. Regardless of the white and black difference, Yoast was the Coach , a man of his word, not just a random football fan. He faced referees during the game, and that was a crucial moment where two colors started to vanish.
Daniel Boone was born on October 22, 1734 and later died on September 26, 1820. He was an American pioneer and hunter whose frontier explorations made him one of the first heroes of the United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now the state of Kentucky. Despite resistance from American Indians, for whom Kentucky was a traditional hunting ground, in 1775 Boone blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. There he founded Boonesborough, one of the first English-speaking settlements beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 people entered Kentucky by following the route marked by Boone.
Of course the coach is going to be the team leader but the kids also need a peer to step up and be a leader. In a not so informal role Gerry Bertier rises to the challenge and establishes himself as the team leader. He shows us this a few times in the movie. Once when he approaches one of the other players, Julius Campbell, and asks him why he is playing so selfish. Gerry then listens to his teammate’s opinion and acts accordingly to do what is best for the team, because that is what leaders do, even if it mean calling out his best friend and making him step it up. Gerry also represents the inspiration of the team because every time the team is down he picks them up and brings them together.
The relationship between an athlete and a coach is an unique and (humble??) one. It’s all about learning, growing, and overcoming failures to its successes. About looking forward to the future together in the game and beyond the life of sports. The interaction between them should be upheld and agreed upon, to be held together. They are the most influential character of the competitive environment. I believe in the value of a coach.
The amount of action happening backstage of a sport is really exhausting. There 's multiple steps and knowledge that has to be put in play. Coaches are probably the most important part of a team. They are the ones that lead the team towards the main goal. One may think that winning is the main key to success, but it is definitely not. It takes effort to be in a team but it takes a person with a lot of patience, courage, and understanding to be a coach. Taking various actions like specific skills, techniques and being an effective coach/ positive approach have a huge role in being a win-win coach.
Herman Boone represents a tough coach, despite difficult school and community politics. His leadership style and behavior has been influenced by his background and experiences. Boone knew that he wasn’t wanted when he first met the Titan staff. He continued to be polite and respectful even after being shoved around. Winning games was his clear plan. Immediately after he becomes head coach, he takes all control and uses his autocratic approach to set the tone for both the team and staff. Throughout summer camp, Boone made it clear, “This is a dictatorship, I am the law.” To achieve his primary goal of providing structure and order, he relies greatly on his position of power.
