Book Notes #1 1.) “Computers were all outside the body. They carried them around outside of them, in their hands, like if you carried your lungs in a briefcase and opened it to breathe.” (10.2) Analysis: This quote was when Titus saw a few old computers which he thought were weird. This was meant to show that he was used to not see computers and them being inside his head. Also, it shows that he thinks it would be hard to live without the feed in his head show. 2.) “That's one of the great things about the feed--which you can be super smart without ever working. Everyone is super smart now. You can look things up automatic, like science and history, like if you want to know which battles of the Civil War George Washington fought in and shit.” (10.3) …show more content…
3.) “Of course, everyone is like, da da da, evil corporations, oh they're so bad, we all say that, and we all know they control everything. I mean, it's not great, because who knows what evil shit they're up to.” (10.6) Analysis: This is showing that the corporation that owns the feed knows everything that they know which could be a possible problem because that grants them so much power over the people. 4.) “We watched the sea move around. It was dead, but colorful.” (34.1-2) Analysis: Titus saying this about the sea shows that environment that they live in is polluted and not much wildlife is living anymore. This shows that the earth’s ecosystem has degraded over the years. 5.) “The mall was really busy, there were a lot of crowds there. They were buying all this stuff, like the inflatable houses for their kids, and the dog massagers, and the tooth extensions that people were wearing,”
The first main cause of the Civil War was conflict between the North and the South about differences in economies. The North economy was dependent on industrialization, while the South economy was dependent on agriculture (Document A). The North had a larger population because of immigrants migrating to the North. The reason why immigrants were migrating to the North was because since the North was more industrialised it had more factories and railroads that needed workers to operate. The South had a smaller population but did produce more cotton.
“It [drove] a deeper wedge between the northern and southern wings of both political parties,” states Robert Kagan (Document 2B). The Civil War occurred because the nation was divided. Some of the divisions were caused by their distinct economies. In addition, they were politically divided by their opposing views. Throughout the 1850s, tension began to increase because of these differences, eventually leading to the Civil War. The two most influential differences that eventually led to the Civil War were the North and the South had diverse economies and opposing political views on slavery.
Over the years, there has been constant debates and disagreements concerning what actually started the civil war. The civil war had a lot of political and social reasons ;however, the main reason is the north and the south's economic differences. For example, the differences in the technology, different working labors, and financial situations. All in all, the economical differences between the north and the south is what initially started the tensions between the North and the South.
In the beginning of the war white southerners reject black men joining their army whether they were slaves or a free man. In addition, confederate leaders and soldiers would not recognize black men as legitimate soldiers when they captured black soldiers they would abuse or murder them, rather than treat them as prisoners of war. However, the confederate’s perspective of black men joining the confederate army changed, when they needed more troops and laborers In addition, the chance of the confederacy winning the Civil war became grim. Therefore, they allowed black men to enlist and promise them freedom, if the remained loyal. Furthermore, the confederacy did what they thought was necessary to save the white
There were many economic differences between the North and the South that eventually led to the Civil War. One main difference was that The South's economy was based on agriculture and slave labor while the North's economy was more focused on manufacturing. According to Document 1a, “Abraham Lincoln Historical Digitization Project” , it represents that the value of Northern manufacturing surpassed the value of Southern manufacturing. This shows that the Northern states had a very well off economy , which can partly be due to its geography and location along the coast which contributed to major trade. Another reason for the North’s good economy was because unlike the South the industrialized North generated their wealth through innovation
ELIZA software was used in helping to treat mental illnesses: patients were able to talk to a machine instead of a psychotherapist. The outcome of this experiment showed that if the patient couldn’t tell whether he or she was talking to a computer, the computer is just a valuable as a therapist. Carr uses this to argue and prove that people can be easily replaced by technology.
When discussing the important work of William Freehling it reminds us how complex and often-overlooked facts are about the civil war. It was one of the bloodiest wars fought by a nation to decide the fate of slavery in America. Over 6000,000 lives were lost. This might not have happened if all the southern states would have committed to the confederacy I believe Freehlings work convincingly shows this. Not only were the southern states not committed to the confederacy they were divided among there self. There was division between the free labor states and the slave states. This was going to cause the southern state to have to fight each other. The Border South stayed neutral for a long time. This leaving the Border States (Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware) open and to win this war you would need these states. Then joined the north side. Lincoln knew to win this war he would have to have control of the import city?s, ports and the amount of supplies that the confederate army received. Having control of the Border States would do all this.
The Civil War was a struggle for leadership between the Northerners and Southerners as the later tried to agitate for secession from the union. Most Americans believe that the Civil war began as a result of slavery or it led to the end of the latter but these are misunderstood episodes of the American History. According to James Illingworth, the civil war began as a result of the Southerners continued quest for the end of the American Union and the fight for states’ rights contrary to the general political leanings on the issue of slavery (Illingworth). The connection between civil war and slavery was the willingness of the slaves to fight for their masters in both divides in exchange for freedom.
The Civil War was a great deal about slavery. Slavery was overwhelmingly the cause for example, the "states' right" always mentioned seems to have been the right to have slaves. IMHO. If you wanted to stop the war you needed to stop slavery.
The Civil War population was truly mind-boggling. The Northern states contributed somewhat close to twenty two million people and the Southern states had a combined population of nine million soldiers. Approximately eight hundred and fifty thousand soldiers died due to combat, starvation, and deadly diseases. Most soldiers were buried on the battlefield and placed in a distinct area depending on where they were attacked. Some battlefields even went above and beyond and buried soldiers’ bodies in National and Confederate cemeteries. The soldiers that were severely injured were transported to nearby hospitals, where most were put to rest. Some of the bodies were even buried by hospitals in order to show importance and respect to the
A war that originated because the nation was divided ultimately marked the beginning of a truly unified United States. The Civil War put to rest the increasing sectionalism that divided the North, the South, and the newly colonized West. At the root were the issues of slavery in the South, and the attempt of the Southern states to withdraw from the Union. Although many lives and untold millions were lost in personal belongings, livestock, and structures, the Civil War set in motion the progression towards a unified Nation. During the 18th and 19th century, slavery was a very significant aspect of the development of the nation. The economic, social, and political development of the
He goes on to compare today’s advancements to those of past inventions, such as the printing press and stopwatch. “When the mechanical clock arrived, people began to think that their brains operated like clockwork…nowadays people prefer to think that they are like computers.” (514)
Have we Become the world of Fahrenheit 451? When you’re using any kind of technology do you ever think about what ever happens to you even after you use it? “It seems like he can no longer be fully in the moment. This is your brain on computers” this is from Matt Richtel’s NY Times articles “Attached to Technology and Paying a Price”.
During the 1860s, America was experiencing a crisis that would further test its ability as a new nation. They faced no threat from foreign countries but rather they faced a more conflicting issue in the nation itself. The Civil War was a war fought by the Americans against each other. The issue that caused the country to fight against each other dealt with slavery. Northern states wanted to abolish slavery but the Southern states would not allow this to happen because slaves were of great use to them. In the document, Senator Robert Toombs Compares Secession with the American Revolution, the senator expresses his view on the issue of slavery.
The Civil War was provoked for several reasons which included industry, slavery, and territorial disputes among the Northern states and Southern states of the newly established United States. The first recorded engagement of war between the North and South is documented to have taken place on April 12th, 1861 at The Battle of Fort Sumter. This was the starting point of a war that would claim over 600,000 American lives in a relatively short span of 4 years.
