The first main cause of the Civil War was conflict between the North and the South about differences in economies. The North economy was dependent on industrialization, while the South economy was dependent on agriculture (Document A). The North had a larger population because of immigrants migrating to the North. The reason why immigrants were migrating to the North was because since the North was more industrialised it had more factories and railroads that needed workers to operate. The South had a smaller population but did produce more cotton. Even though the South economy was dependent on agriculture the North produced more food. The North manufactured nearly triple of what the South did in 1861 (Document B). Document D, goes on the explain
During the time period of 1860 and 1877 many major changes occurred. From the beginning of the civil war to the fall of the reconstruction, the United States changed dramatically. Nearly one hundred years after the Declaration of Independence which declared all men equal, many social and constitutional alterations were necessary to protect the rights of all people, no matter their race. These social and constitutional developments that were made during 1860 to 1877 were so drastic it could be called a revolution.
Arguably the most important cause of the civil war surprisingly did not even pertain to slavery. This unexpected cause involved the growing sectional differences between the North and South. The two places had separate economies, cultures, and geography. Because the South had flat, fertile, and sometimes swampy plains, crops became much more successful there. (Doc 3 Pic 1). Independant agrarian societies and farms took off, supplying food and raw materials to other parts of the world, notably the Northern United States. In lieu of fertile soil and easily diverted rivers as in the South, the North managed to take advantage of their other natural resources. For example, the rocky and mountainous terrain with quick-moving streams supplied
Starting out there were many factors that caused the Civil War. The two main issue that caused the Civil War were slavery and the economic and political differences between the North and South. Although the Compromise of 1850, inflated the power of the South to compensate for how it was becoming more focused around slavery. Angry Northerners began to take action against the South in events such as the Bleeding Kansas. Southerners saw the election of a new Republican president which they wouldn't be able to stand up to politically or economically. The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to hide the fact that the North had a limitless capacity to expand(population and land) and the South wasn't going to expand. The
The Civil War lasted from 1861-1865. During this time period, the war was evenly fought between the South (Confederates) and the North (Union). The Confederate side allowed slavery and wanted the United States to go pro-slavery, while the North contained free states and was anti-slavery. The Civil War was a tough fight for both sides, resulting in heavy losses for the Confederates, as well as the Union. The South lost the War in 1861-1865 over the North due to their lack of industrialization, population and their loss of Britain and France’s support.
Fighting a war takes courage, but this courage isn’t utilized solely on the battlefield. It is around late 1777 to mid 1778, and George Washington’s troops were camped at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. This winter lodging is located on the Schuylkill River 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia, where the British are encamped. Supplies are running low and Valley Forge is exposed to the elements, leading to casualties from sickness, exposure, and starvation. Washington’s soldiers are now faced with a decision: Do they stay, reenlist, and keep fighting, or do they leave for home as soon as their nine month enlistment is over in February? If I had been in that scenario, I would have reenlisted because there is a need for able soldiers, Washington is
Lincoln’s election was the cause of the Civil War. There were many factors concerning the Civil War outbreak, but Lincoln's election sealed the Union's fate due to the South’s fear of losing power. For example, the election of Lincoln made the Southerners feel threatened because (B/C) of his negative view of slavery. Secondly, the South didn’t like the fact that Lincoln promoted (S/V) a strong central government, whereas the South was in favor of popular sovereignty, especially over the issue of slavery. Thirdly, Lincoln was from the North, which was a concern for the South, who(W/W) did not feel a president from the anti-slavery North would keep their best interests in mind, especially slavery.
Slavery was the main cause of the Civil War. The economies of the North and the South were very different. The South relied heavily on the plantations, factories and slaves for their incomes while the north relied more on its ports and trading for their economy. When the north wanted to end slavery, the south saw it as the north destroying their
During the the 1860s, a division occurred in the United States of America in which a civil war took place. When Lincoln was elected, 11 states seceded from America- Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and Florida. They called themselves the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis to be their president. Both sides, Confederate and Union, had many different views on slavery, some were similar while others were different. While most Union citizens were against slavery, some had similar beliefs as the confederates.
If asking an average person on what started the Civil War, one would probably answer with slavery. However, there were several other reasons for why the Civil War took place. The South wanted to succeed mainly for the same reason the Colonies succeeded from British Powers. The South wanted their independence. The South wanted to escape the tariffs that were being placed on them by Andrew Jackson, just as the British were putting tariffs on the colonies. The tariffs created a very hostile atmosphere that was pushing the states’ decisions to secede from the Union. These tariffs would reduce the amount of money the South could take in, because foreign countries could not afford to buy much cotton because lack of their exported income from the tariffs. Vice President, John Calhoun proposed that the states have the right to nullify a federal law that not only can protect the welfare of the states but it also violated the Constitution. Once Calhoun proposed this nullification, to the South it became clear that the North could wield power that could damage the South’s economy. The South believed that they were fighting against a tyrannical government that the North were subjugating and enslaving them. The South really disliked the high taxes, which isn’t it one of the main reasons that our previous generations fought against in the Revolutionary
There were many issues back in the late 1800’s in America that led to the Civil War. There are also many factors that go into why the winning side won. The reasons, however great, can be split up into 4 categories: Geography, Economy, Society, and Transportation. Each of these topics we will discuss based on the North as well as the South. You’d be surprised by just how much one region is better off than the other.
The Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1877, was mainly caused by the diverging society between the North and the South. The North and the South had different goals. There were many factors that led to the war and the chief ones were political and economic differences between the North and the South. The North’s aggression to control the South had led to the point where it was intolerable. The issue on slavery was one of the causes of the Civil War. Slavery and slave trades had become a big part of the South’s economy. The slaves were needed to work on plantations which helped the South prospered. During the 19th Century, the North worked hard on abolishing slavery, which they thought was a disgrace to the Union.
The first cause of the Civil War were economic issues. The south, not being as industrialized as the north, couldn’t make their own basic supplies. Therefore, they had to rely on the north. The only thing the could trade in exchange for supplies was cotton (Document 1). The south also relied on their slaves for income. The cotton that was grown was picked by the slaves. This slave-picked cotton was the only thing that really made them money (Document 3). Overall, the north was far more advanced than the south. They didn’t rely on anyone else, like the south relied on them. The only thing the south was superior at was slave population and cotton bales (Document 2). These economic issues that the south faced was one cause of the Civil War.
The causes of most wars are often very complex, but in the America civil war it came down to two major issues, slavery and the protection of the Union. In the North, they were growing richer all the time as industry developed fast. The workers were mostly immigrants with low wages. The South didn’t have these resources, and the slaves were essential for them. The Northern politicians insisted that the Slavery should be abolished and that this was an evil system that should be stamped out. Only the rich wool farmers and other wealthy
One of the key ingredients that led to the Civil War was the economic and social differences between the northern and southern states. Cotton was essentially the lifeblood of the southern states, and that meant they relied heavily on the use of slaves for their livelihood. On the contrary, the northern states focused their efforts on industrializing their
The industrial advancement of the Northern states and the farming culture of the Southern states was one of the most significant causes to the Civil War. As shown in Document A of our Document Based Questions packet, the railroad systems of the North allowed early advancements in manufacturing
