He began going on expeditions that exposed him to the sea when the family suffered from financial distress. In 1470 the family relocated to Savona, Italy and Christopher accompanied by his brothers sailed the seas during numerous trading trips. The beginning of his journey of being in the sea began at the age of 14, doing anything from being a messenger, common sailor and even as a privateer. Between 1474-1745 Columbus made a trip to the island of Chios and on 1476 he sailed a Genoese merchantman. The commercial expedition was made up of 5 trading ships headed for England and it was the first time Columbus had the opportunity to leave the Mediterranean Sea and sail the Atlantic Ocean. He almost lost his life during the trip when the ship was attacked by French privateers near the coast of Portugal. Columbus had to desert the burning ship and swam to the Lisbon shore (Bushman 15). He then studied mathematics, cartography, navigation and astronomy. That is when his plan that was going to change the history of the world …show more content…
His mission was to explore unknown areas west of the Caribbean still trying to find a shortcut to Asia. He took four ships for the journey, Capitana, Gallega, Vizcaina and Santiago de Palos. After being arrested, he was no longer allowed in back Hispaniola. The settlers still remembered his cruel ways. The governor of Hispaniola was sending a fleet back to Spain of 28 ships. Columbus warned him about an approaching hurricane, but he did not listen. Only 4 ships survived the storm. Columbus explored parts of Central America, but weather conditions and termites destroyed parts of the ships. Columbus and the men were stranded for about a year in Jamaica before someone rescued them. The crew did all they could to survive in the meantime. They used remaining parts of the ships to build shelter and made peace with the natives that would bring them food. They returned to Spain late 1504. At the time of their return Columbus was devastated to find out that Queen Isabella was ill and dying. He knew that without her, he would not be able to travel again. Columbus was advanced in age and died in 1506 in

Even though he is celebrated in the United States, Christopher Columbus should not be considered a hero. He took advantage of the generosity of the American natives he found. His greedy ambition had horrible results that most Americans do not even realize.
Columbus’s father went to sea to sell his cloth. Christopher was about fourteen when he started to assist his father on business trips. At this time, the world started to open up for Christopher. From when he first started to assist his dad, he took notes on how the sea changed colors and the patterns of the winds and currents. He soon became aware of the virtues and the risks of navigation.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in the year 1451. Columbus was a sailor. He left the Spanish port of Palos on August 3, 1492, with three ships and a crew of 90 people to find a western sea path to India and China. In the month of October, he reached in the Bahamas and later the same day spotted Cuba, which he thought was Mainland China then. In December he arrived on Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), which he got confused with Japan. The following year he went back to Spain with what he assumed again was seven “Indian” captives. Christopher Columbus travelled to discover America, but he actually got confused with many other things and ended up failing in every aspect. As a traveler,
In the summer of 1492, Christopher Columbus, a skilled navigator and seamen, departed Spain in search of a direct route to Asia. With financial support from Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, Genoese merchants, and capital from his own fortune, Columbus and his fleet of three ships traveled west towards what was to be the New World. After sailing for several months facing many hardships, Columbus and his crew discovered new lands that were to be claimed for Spain. These men experienced beauty of inexplicable terms, and interacted with many new types of peoples. Upon his return to Spain, about 3 months after his arrival at San Salvador, Columbus drafted a letter to Ferdinand and Isabella
Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. He is famous for discovering America, although he wasn't the first. He was the son of a wool merchant and when he was a teenager, he got a job on a merchant ship. He sailed for many years and in August the third 1492 he took a voyage that changed his life forever. He sailed from Palos, Spain, with three small ships.
After Columbus found the new land, he set sail west again in 1493 with 17 ships and 1200 men. With all of that, he found Dominica, Guadeloupe, and Jamaica. Then they headed back to Hispaniola only to find the fort destroyed and his crew killed because they mistreated the indigenous peoples. At the rubble of the fort, Columbus established a colony, called Santo Domingo after a battle in 1495, he conquered the whole island. Then he set sail for Spain in 1496, arriving in Cadiz on July 13.
The ships that were involved in this voyage were The Pinta, The Nina, and the Santa Maria. These ships were coming from Palos. Columbus conducted this trip with the help of his two brothers Martin Alonso Pinzon that was in command of The Pinta. And his other brother who was the youngest of all Vicente Yanez Pinzon he was in charge of the Nina. On October 12th of 1492 Columbus and his brothers made landfall in the morning. Columbus landed at what we now call the Bahamas. But at that time Columbus had named it San Salvador. Columbus met a few of the local people in the Bahamas these people were friendly and Columbus named them to be Indians. A few days later Columbus and his brother moved on to sailing to Cuba. Where there thoughts were to meet with the Mongol emperor of China. Then they moved on in December they sailed east way of Hispaniola. Around Christmas time Santa Maria ended up getting in a wreck in Cap-Haitien. Columbus was lucky enough to get all the men ashore. The people of Cap-Haitien seemed to be very friendly so he let about thirty-nine men stay ashore. Columbus soon returned to Spain on the Nina. Columbus seemed to have good luck with getting to places the winds seemed to be favorable with him. He had no problem going west from the Canaries. Then again sailed north more easts and yet again got good winds along the way. If you really think about going in the ocean and sailing at times it can be really difficult to find favorable winds just so that you can get to where you want to go. Soon after he was traveling he was able to meet up with his brother Martin that was on the Pinta. But not much longer and they were separated because of the winds and the sea. In March of 1493 Columbus landed in what we know now as Libson. John II interviewed Columbus soon as he got to Libson. Soon later Columbus went off to Palos traveled to Spain and Barcelona. Isabella the second welcomed Columbus when he
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 as the son of a merchant, most likely into a Christian household. As a teenager, he worked on a merchant ship and gained experience in trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. He continued similar jobs at sea until his first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1470, when the French attacked his ship along the Portuguese Coast. Despite his sunken ship, Columbus floated to Lisbon, where he married Felipa Perestrello and had a son. At this time, he also began studies in mathematics, astronomy, and navigation, thus inspiring him to begin formulating his world changing plan. After the death of his wife, he moved to Spain, remarried and had another son. Meanwhile, he
Columbus decided that he should start converting Indians to Christianity on his third voyage. He also had his authority of governing taken away by the crown. So when he went to the colony the new governor arrest him and sent him back to Spain. Columbus had a fourth voyage. He was assigned the task of finding a sea route to Asia. He believed that with his new knowledge of the Indies, he could find the Asian continent. Columbus failed once again. All of Columbus’ documents show us that he failed at his tasks but brought Europeans to the Americas.
39 men stayed behind to occupy and govern it, leaving Columbus and the remaining crew members to sail home. In 1493, Columbus embarked on a new voyage, exploring more islands in the Caribbean Sea. Upon returning to Hispaniola, he discovered that Ville de la Navidad had been destroyed, and the sailors left there had been massacred. This caused him to establish a forced labour policy over the native population, making them rebuild the settlement and search for gold. When he returned for the second time (we're on his third voyage now), the settlers complained about Columbus' false claims of riches and the poor treatment they received. Eventually, a royal official was sent by the Spanish monarchy, and Columbus was arrested and stripped of authority. Later, the charges were dropped, but he lost most of the riches made during his voyages, and his title as Governor of the Indies. In the last two years of his life, he tried to regain his riches and his titles but was mostly unsuccessful. He died on May 20th, 1506, believing he had discovered a shorter route to
Christopher Columbus took a total of four voyages, his intent was to sail west across the Atlantic Ocean to reach Asia because he thought it would be would be shorter, safer, and less expensive than going around Africa to the Indies. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who ruled Spain at the time, funded his first voyage and promised “Admiral of the Ocean Sea” as long as he brought back riches and claimed land for Spain (Meltzer 67). On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, with his three ships and ninety men and headed for the Canary Islands. After leaving the Canary Islands, he landed on the Bahamas what he thought was the coast of China. On Christmas Eve, one of his ships, the Santa María, was wrecked on the north
