Rock music has been a large part of our lives since its origins way back in the 1940’s. It’s tone has advanced and changed to meet the needs of specific sub genres, but the message is the same throughout the decades; Rock music is a staple of American culture. Emo and Death Metal hit on the emotional strains of their listeners, while Christian Rock and Rock and Roll give a more positive and upbeat feel. Regardless of the tone, music has been proven time and time again to be directly linked to the brain’s pleasure system. Songs that release a lower level of dopamine have been proven to trigger negative emotions such as depression and anxiety. They are also more likely to cause an emotional connection between the listener, and the song. Other

Their experiments are further support that opioids are involved. "It's another piece of the puzzle," says Bowling. "You don't need a neuroscientist to tell you that music can be invigorating, intensely pleasurable or sad, but this is an exciting time for research on music's biological foundations."
Kerrange! is a UK based magazine design for people who listen to Rock music, ranging from hard rock to death metal. Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the 1950s and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly, in the United Kingdom. Musically, Rock has centered on electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass guitar and drums. Rock music and fashion have been inextricably linked. Music makes the human body feel rewarded. When you start to hear a song or beat that is catchy, you either sing along or move with it. Rock and roll evolved around the 1950’s and this music made people want to sing along and move. But instead of the music, bands were more worried about their makeup and their love lives, this is when GNR(Guns N’ Roses) came into play. GNR joined together in the 80s, and they still play their music at shows, concerts, and other big events until this day. GNR wanted to make a move forward in rock and roll due to the pitty music that they have been listening to, and they succeeded.
Music has more of an influence on the people in the twenty-first century than it ever has before. Teens, especially, are surrounded by some sort of it in everything they are around or do. Many disagree on how music impacts one’s mental state and behavior; however, all agree that the impact depends on how the listener feels before and how they allow it to influence them.
As the combination of different sounds travel through out ears, we tend to connect music with certain emotions or memories. For example, to feel that adrenaline rush we select a more upbeat tone in music. If you want a relaxed mood, you listen to something nice and calm with a relaxing melody. According to an article by Mental Health Center, students at Penn State did a study on music and emotions; they showed that people’s emotions have a more positive attitude after they listened to music. Music has an effect on our emotions. When we listen to songs being played we can feel the emotion be portrayed in the music. Psychologists have seen that this is true to us, but have not completely came to a conclusion as to why. In tests to see if ordinary listeners could discern the musical emotion in songs, “moreover, and more generally, we were struck by the systematicity and reliability of the judgment data collected with ordinary listeners. Emotional judgments exhibit a high degree of consistency, suggesting that perception of emotions in music is natural and effortless for the large majority of listeners” (Juslin, Sloboda , 114). This then can conclude that brains are designed to find the emotions in music. When we are presented a certain emotion we tend to mimic that emotion. It is that natural empathy that we have hardwired into our brains.
It is no secret that music has a strange way of reaching people who were previously thought to be too far gone. Music has the capability to connect to individuals and touch them in a way that causes them to have some strange reactions (Warner et al, 35-36). These reactions aren’t fully understood but have the possibility to lead to great medical advancements. While some psychologists, and parents are strong believers in the helpful effects of music on people’s mental health, others see the dangers that come with music’s great influence and think it could be used as a dangerous tool against individuals.
The impact of music on positive psychology and emotion is a well known fact. Music has an extraordinary ability to change people’s emotions. In humans, music has the ability to invoke emotions of sadness, happiness and even fear (Goycoolea, Levy & Ramirez, 2013). The ability of music to alter human mood makes it one of the greatest subjects of positive psychology. Seligman (2011) argued that even though a lot of effort has been spent on psychotherapy and pharmacology, such interventions are not
Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia have found that when volunteers were exposed to extreme music genres including heavy metal, emo, hardcore, punk, and screamo, they actually experienced a range of positive feelings, such as calmness, happiness or being inspired. The study, conducted by honours student Leah Sharman and psychologist Genevieve Dingle and published in the June 26, 2015 edition of Science Alert by writer Peter Dockrill , took 39
In the study completed by Fiona Malpass, David Havard, Karis Benford, Ana Costescu, Angeliki Sofitiki, and Donna Taylor of the University of Westminster, results show personality outcome of heavy metal listening to be “…stronger composite preference for the heavy metal tracks was associated with higher Openness to Experience, more negative attitudes toward authority, lower self-esteem, greater need for uniqueness, and lower religiosity” (377). They also state that “In addition, men showed a significantly stronger preference for the tracks than women. These results are discussed in terms of the psychological needs that contemporary heavy metal fills for some individuals” (377). This shows that music can also effect personality differently based upon gender. Further research was completed just on women with the genre of heavy metal by Milton Becknell, Michael Firmin, Chi-En Hwang, David Fleetwood, Kristie Tate, and Gregory Schwab who are college student researchers from Cedarville University, Cedarville, OH. They state that “More recent research, however, suggests that Arnett's position is more representative of females than males (Lacourse, Claes, & Villeneuve, 2001). The general assumption is that heavy metal music listeners release or unload their pent-up frustrations into the loud and intense sounds which they
How can different types of music affect people’s emotions? Music has many different ways to affect people. In some ways, it is good for the body both physically and mentally.
