These days, adolescents of this generation often listen music during different times of the day. This has a negative effect on their lives for multiple reasons. Certain genres of music can expose teens to multiple explicit references. Music can also affect emotions and cause students to often enhance or intensify their mood directions. Some genres such as Heavy Metal and Rock can lead to emotions such as depression, sadness, and even suicidal thoughts. All of this can lead to alienation from the general population. Sometimes, teens can spend hours and hours listening to music in the day.

According to Source A, adolescents spend up to ⅓ of the day using media such as online videos and music and nearly nine hours on average per day, which causes them to drift away from their surroundings and alienate themselves. Source D talks about Dr. Tobias Greitemeyer from the University of Sussex conducted a series of examinations which resulted in music helping adolescents becoming more socially responsible and caring. The examination consisted of a child who would listen to his/her choice of music and a researcher would walk by and “accidentally” knock over a cup of pencils. The children would be studied depending on when and how they picked up the cup of pencils. Some children, who were listening to songs such as “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson, picked up the pencils 5 times faster than the other students, leading to multiple results of positive effects. Yet, this doesn’t always have a positive effect in all instances.
