During the 1920s, new big waves of immigrant took place especially catholic and Jewish European immigrants. These had increase the Nativism feelings among the white native born Americans. The National Origins Act was the accumulation of ant immigrant orientation. The national origin act of 1924 limited immigration from Europeans countries’ more importantly it had linked the rate of immigrant allowed to enter the US as linked to number of the total immigration on 1890. These clearly showed the tradition of the nativist sentiment, because most immigrants until 1890 were white, Anglo Saxon protestants from Britain and Anglo-Saxon countries. The Chinese Exclusion Act was not a good idea because the Chinese faced discrimination and were mistreated. In document D, it states how the Chinese men are loyal and hardworking. For those reasons, the Irishmen hate them. This evidence suggests that the Chinese men did no harm to the Irishmen. The Chinese worked more diligently than any other race and still faced discrimination because of resentment from the Irishmen. The Irish and Germans believed the Chinese were taking all the jobs available and cause them to lose money. Furthermore, in document B, it demonstrates how the Irishmen and Germans want to attack a powerless and emotionally drained Chinese man but the symbol of America, Columbia, is attempting to protect him from getting harmed.

Throughout history there have been cases of certain groups of people accused of being inferior to others. Most of these accusations are formed from a lack of understanding about people’s traditions, and lifestyles. It becomes increasingly more difficult when foreign cultures try to immigrate to other countries or areas. One case of this was The Chinese Exclusion act, which halted Asian immigration for ten years and prevented the immigrants already here from gaining citizenship. One of the reasons American citizens supported the Chinese Exclusion Act was, they were worried that the Chinese would take all of their jobs and force them to compete with each other. Another reason was, they believed many of the stereotypes that were given to the Chinese immigrants at that time.

Finally, there was much arguing about the immigrants that were allowed in, and the types of immigrants that were allowed in. In the United States, we are known as a nation with equal rights. However, in our history, public issues arise jeopardizing the difference between the common good and individual rights. The Chinese Exclusion Act was one issue that was very controversial. Many people immigrate to our nation as a new start, a new beginning. In the Western United States, many immigrants were from China. Nativists believed America is for Americans only and no other race. This made many people hostile and discriminate Chinese people. Eventually, the Chinese Exclusion Act was signed by Chester A Arthur barring Chinese people wishing to immigrate to America. This violated their individual rights because they thought it was for the common good, however it violated our constitution. Violating their individual rights, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion act, disabling many chinese people to emigrate back to America which resulted in opposition and hatred, even though America believed it was for the common good. I believe it was unconstitutional as many Chinese people had no power to voice their opinion.

Since the beginning of times up until present time the United States Congress has always passed laws to limit immigrants rights. Immigrants who came to America for a better life have gone through many struggles due to the restrictions against them. Precedently, with the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited Chinese immigrants to enter the United States. Another act was the Gentlemen’s Agreement Act between Japan and America, where Japan agreed to limit immigration, only if President Theodore Roosevelt agreed to limit restrictions on Japanese immigrants. Then in 1924, Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924. The act limited the number of aliens that are allowed in the U.S. Congress passed this act because they felt that immigrant threaten America’s “old ways.” Congress wanted American to be “pure” again, by doing so, they had to get rid of many immigrants. The factors that led to Congress to pass the Immigration Act were to maintain American traditions, maintain jobs for American citizens, and repair the income.

The 1924 law reaffirmed the 1880s legislation barring Chinese immigrants and added Japanese and other Asians to the list of the excluded. But it left open immigration from the Western Hemisphere. Farmers in the Southwest demanded continued access to cheap agricultural labor, and during the 1920s some 500,000 Mexicans crossed the border. In addition, Congress in 1924 passed the Indian Citizenship Act, which extended suffrage and citizenship to all American Indians. Indian veterans of World World I had already been made citizens, but now Congress deemed every Indian worthy of participating in American democracy.

Economically, they filled a significant need for cheap labor in booming American industries. The large numbers of immigrants helped keep labor cost down for Big Business and different groups were often put against each other in competition for the cheapest workers. Politically, different immigrant groups became active members of various labor organizations and unions, pushing to change pro-business laws and establish regulations governing working conditions and wages. And socially, American culture as it is known now was formed by this influx of immigrants. People from all over the planet brought with them not only their labor but also their cultures, helping to contribute to the mosaic that is the American way of life. These immigrants, as shown by the prejudice and discrimination directed towards them, were not always welcome. Nativist movements were directed against the Chinese, Japanese, Italians, and others, especially during the 1880s and 90s. As evidenced by the Chinese Exclusion Act and later legislation that limited immigration from Japan and other regions, this anti-immigrant sentiment went as high up as the nation's capital. Ever since the creation of the human race, human beings have been prone to moving place to place for new opportunities and beginnings. People who move from one country to another are called immigrants. As nations started to form, their were rules and laws set on who could and could not live in a specific country. Most of these laws included immigrants to go through a lengthy process to get approved to go into the country they desired. However, even after the lengthy process is completed, the country still has the right to deny their entrance. In fear of being rejected, many immigrants decided to illegally cross the borders of other countries causing many problems with the country's society, specially the United States of America. This limitation was like a quota system that only aloud two percent instead of the three percent of each foreign born group living in the United states in 1890. Like it say in Document A “Under the act of 1924 the number of each nationality who may be admitted annually is limited to two per cent of the population of such nationality resident in the United States according to the census of 1890.” Using the 1890 census instead of newer up-to-date ones they excluded a lot of new immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe that came by in resent years (This is shown awfully well in Document B). The poor conditions and lack of opportunities in the 19th century China and the Chinese’s hope of accumulating wealth to support their families in China fostered the huge influx of Chinese immigrants to United States. The discovery of gold in California also fuelled many Chinese’s dream of fast wealth (112). Due to the need for mass labour stemming from industrialization and high productivity of Chinese labours, employers would enthusiastically hire Chinese labour, which in turn sparked the increasing competition with the local workers and a growing anti-Chinese sentiment (114).
