A crime is a crime no matter the age of the criminal. Their actions should be punished. Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because they’re responsible for their own decisions.
Juveniles know what sort of actions can make you a criminal. Starting at a young age they should know right from wrong. In the article “On punishment and Teen killers” by Jennifer Bishop states,“He reported to a friend, who testified at his trial, about his “thrill kill” that he just wanted to “see what it would feel like to shoot someone.” This situation reveals how they’re responsible for their actions because he didn’t have a reason to commit the crime. The criminal wanted to see how it felt to shoot someone without caring the effect it will make on others and himself. The author also states, “if brain development were the reason, then teens would kill at roughly the same rates all over the world. They do not.” This states that brain development is not the problem. That is something that can be said to conceal the true meaning of their crime. Teenagers are responsible for their crime and they should be convicted as adults.

In the article “Kids Are Kids” by Marjie Lundstrom states,” Research suggest that adolescents squeezed through the adult system are most likely to come out as violent career criminals than similar kids handled on the juvenile side”. This states that teenagers need some kind of disciplined to help them behave in a sort of way. The article also states,” Today we are witness to criminal defendants-- facing life sentences without parole-- who cannot shave, still play with fire trucks and love to act out scenes from television or play video games.” This action states that teenagers are not in the age to be convicted but the actions they commit say otherwise. They’re going to jail for their actions not for their age. That is why teenagers should be convicted as adults for
So should juvenile offenders be punished and tried as adults? Juveniles who do their own thing and go with the flow of doing terrible activities, they’re the ones who get sent to jail. If they’re doing illegal substances, hurting people, causing drama, then they do need to be sent to jail. Children should not be allowed to do their own thing just because they are older, mature, or is just a good kid in general. No parent knows what their own child is doing in their free time when they’re not around.
The human brain is not fully developed until you are in your mid-20s. Should people be tried as an adult for crimes they committed as juveniles, before they were even 18 years of age? Jose, only 15 year olds at the time of the crime, had a difficult life, grew up in a rough neighborhood, and was eventually arrested and brought to court for murder after participating in a deadly brawl. The first major turning point for juvenile legal rights occurred in 1966, in the case Kent v. United States, where the Supreme Court decided that a juvenile cannot be waived to adult court without first being given due process, which includes a hearing, assistance of counsel, and a statement of reasons. Another major milestone for juvenile legal rights was in 1967, in the
Today, we live in a society that struggles with many problems, crime being one of them. When juveniles commit crimes, should we disregard their age solely because of their crimes? We don’t do the same when they’re not allowed to smoke, drink, drive, or even watch R-rated movies. Although some may believe otherwise, juveniles shouldn't be sent to prison for life without parole because people only want to treat teenagers like adults when they do something wrong. Also, not all teens are the same and are raised in the same environments. Everyone is different and everybody makes mistakes. In Jennifer Jenkin’s article, “On Punishment and Teen Killers”, she believes otherwise when she talks about juvenile crime and her views on their
are crimes of maturity so I'd say treat them as adults. As a matter of fact, juveniles should be prosecuted as adults because their crimes create emotional trauma for victims' families, also their future shouldn’t be taken into consideration if they took someone else's future, and their crimes should not go unnoticed just because of their age they are well aware of what they are doing. Plus there crime's severity is very serious and should have second thoughts of their consequences.
Over the last few decades there have been more and more violent crimes committed by children and young adults. Some of these children are under the age of 15, committing violent crimes such as robbery, rape, murder, gang violence. Some of these children are being tried as adults while others are tried and punished as juveniles. A juvenile offender may receive a slap on the wrist being sentenced to house arrest or parole while others are being sent to adult prisons without the possibility of parole. An adult committing these same crimes would receive a more sever sentenced.
Should teens be presented as adults once they commit a serious crime ? Gail Garinger states that, “homicide is the worst crime, but striking down the juvenile life penalty in 2005, the supreme court recognize that even in the worst terrifying murder cases.” Teens have hard backgrounds so these are the reasons why they commit these crimes. People do not really understand how young teens commit these crimes, but the question is do they really understand why they are doing it.
Should Juveniles be Tried as Adults? Violent crimes are committed in the United States everyday. Almost one-half of them are committed by teenagers ages 13 through 17 ("End of Line" 484). After the crimes have been committed and the lives of these children have been radically changed, society often demands that those who commit violent crimes be tried as adults, rather than as adolescents. Juveniles should be given light sentences and a second chance to return to the streets. Trying these teens as adults unjust and unfair, there other alternatives that our society can turn to, to help make our communities better places to live. We need to realize that children are our future, and we
In the article, “Are Teenage Brains Really Different From Adult Brains”, it explains how teenager’s brains are different from an adult’s. The article describes the prefrontal cortex, which is a part of the brain that weighs outcomes, creates judgments, and controls a person’s impulse and emotions. This part of the brain does not develop in most cases until the mid twenties, which proves that a teenager does not have a fully developed mind to even commit a crime such as murder and actually know that the consequences of the mistake they are making. Another article that support those statements is one from CNN, “Kids Should Never Be Tried as Adults”, this article states that teens and children are too young to process information and plan a murder. It also expresses that the teens are harmless and not exactly aware of how brutal the crime is or the consequences that go along with the
“I Believe In Justice, and I Believe In People Being Held Responsible For Their Actions”-Bruce Willis. The quote means no matter what their age is they are responsible for their crimes big or small. With that being said juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because many understand what they are doing even though they are “just kids”. Also because there's no such things as adult crimes just adult criminals. Some violent crimes are assault, murder, sexual assault, etc. Many juveniles have committed these crimes.
Researchers have discussed that at the age between 12 and 15 is when a child starts to develop the understanding of their actions. Psychologically, their brain starts to advance into creating their own thought process. Dr. William Womack a Psychiatrist states that young children have not yet developed the mind set to value another human’s life. A minor who commits a crime at a young age should pay for the consequences as an adult would. Their thought process doesn’t start after they commit the crime, it starts before they commit the crime. I believe that when a minor commits a violent crime they know what they are doing.
Either to try individuals as adults or juveniles has evoked profound strife. I strongly believe that all individuals over the age 15 should be tried as an adult no matter the crime. According to the Justice Department, serious illegal offenses such as rape, assault, robbery with violence, and drug negotiation have increased among juveniles to 30% with 10% of all homicides by juveniles. To begin with, juveniles have the ability to plan a kill. As well as acknowledging that a crime by a juvenile is no different than a crime by an adult.
When teens are tried they are either tried as juvenile or adults. If they are tried as minors then they go to a juvenile facility to get the help they need and go to school. Some teenagers are tried as adults and go directly to adult prisons just as any other person over eighteen would, however kids are not subject to the death penalty. Some kids may commit these crimes because they have undeveloped brains or mental issues ( Thompson 89). People are released from prison after short amounts of time because they committed a terrible crime as a minor instead of an adult. Most of these former criminals will repeat their actions putting our society at risk of assault, rape, or even murder. When someone commits a crime, and the crime is truly immoral and should deserve to pay the consequences no matter what their age is. Teens should be held accountable for their actions and tried as adults for heinous crimes they commit.
Kids should be subjected to the measures of punishment that our judicial system is giving to them. Kids who show lots of enmity should be tried as adults. It is the only way to protect the innocent children. These kids know right from wrong, but they choose to do the wrong things and violence is wrong. As the laws have gotten stricter on discipline the kids have gotten wilder. When we let society tell us how to discipline our children then violent children is the result.
As more minors commit murders, courts must decide their punishments. There are two sides divided on punishments for juveniles. One side wants children to be never be tried as as adults (no matter the crime). The otherside wants to allow for courts to charge children as adults; with a reasonable excuse to (like murder). Kids who intentionally commit murder, rape, or other major offenses must be tried as an adult and be charged with life without the possibility of parole. It is only fair for the safety and peace of our citizens, to try child offenders who committed a serious crime as adults.
Teenagers should be tried as adults for the violent crimes that they commit. In today’s generation, there are a lot of crimes taking place. Adults aren’t the only ones that are committing the crimes, teenagers are as well. If you are old enough to do the crime, you are old enough to do the time. Juveniles should be responsible for their own actions and they should be held accountable for the decisions they make. Juveniles do violent things and don’t think twice about the
