What surprised me the most but also concerned me about the HBO documentary, Children in Crisis, were the factual statements that would show up on the plain black screen. To name a few, only 10% of parents seek help for their obese children and only 5 states make physical education mandatory in school systems. The way I see it is these facts are surprising but also concerning because it appears we are not doing enough to change this epidemic. As I learned in Nutrition 280 as well as the video clip eating healthy and exercise go hand and hand. In order to address these facts, I believe caregivers, cafeteria workers, school administrators, congress, physicians and so on should be looking out for the best interest of the child population. Just head on over to Festival or PC Dukes here at JMU and you’ll see what I’m talking about. This ties in to morals and what is morally right and wrong. Is it morally right to target young children with advertisements including their favorite cartoon character or pop star? What kind of character do you have if you’re the company doing this? Is money more important than the health of the up and coming population? Lastly, to explain why only 10% of parents seek help, there is justice as it corresponds to lack of monetary funds and affordable health care. For those who can seek help, helping children reach a healthy weight should not be about aesthetics but improving the overall health of the child as the documentary stated as well. Some doctors may become skeptical of parent’s intentions and question whether or not to withdraw care. This is where authority comes in. If the government has no federal law in place to require physical education in elementary, middle, and high schools, then what do the legitimate authorities such as Congress, FDA,
The rate of childhood obesity has grown an enormous amount over the years with more than 40 million children being overweight! That number is astonishingly high and it is very obvious that something needs to be done about this. Studies had shown in 2008 that more than 40 million children were said to be overweight and the sad truth is that they are still increasing rapidly to this day; also every 1 in 4 teenagers is said to not reach the fitness guidelines (Tanner) according to an article by Lindsey Tanner. For this problem to be resolved not only do the parents of children need to make sure their kids are staying active but also, the schools they attend need to make sure they are getting a well-balanced meal and have some type of physical activity during their school day. Each state in America is given a percentage rate on the number of obese people in that particular state. The highest ranking state is Mississippi with a percentage of 34.9 and the state ranking the least is Connecticut with 24.5 percent. Different researches have shown that each day 850 lives are taken due to obesity and each year there are more than 300,000 people that die from obesity related illnesses. These are deaths that most likely could have been avoided if these individuals would have had the proper exercise and diet in their lives.
In the poem, by Denise Levertov called the Stricken Children, the speaker goes through a troubling time in finding that a childhood place has been desecrated and experiences a hardship of adversity and has trouble dealing with it. A Wishing Well from his childhood has been destroyed and they react negatively and don’t want to face the destruction and leaves. The poem discusses the topic of a loss of innocence. In the beginning the speaker in the poem was really happy and reminiscent of the Well. “Bubbling clear and soundless into a shallow pool.”
The governments have tried to get involved, but their attempts have failed in the long run, trying to strive to get kids to eat better because of funding. All were of good intentions, but there needs to be a program that is going to last is the issue now. Since the world is all technological, the kids by watching someone who is important to them on the television getting kids to see the importance of their health. Since funding is a problem, there should be groups getting together to try to solve it and come up with a solution as this will lead to a long lasting effect on all who are involved. This is not a hopeless cause as “a study of 8,165 children, which showed that for the first in decades, the increase in U.S. childhood obesity has leveled off” (Kluger).
Thousands of children around America are increasingly joining the obesity epidemic and are struggling to get out of it. In the documentary, Fed Up, by Stephanie Soechtig, she creates a documentary that targets young teenagers and parents to uncover the truth of the epidemic and reveal how the food industry is hurting the children 's diet by making them become addicted to sugar. It explains how it is beyond people 's willpower and exercise alone that solves the epidemic, rather it is the food industries ' fault for the nfood they produce. Soechtig uses pathos, ethos and logos by documenting personal stories from young obese teenagers, providing a numerous amount of credible sources from a wide range of experts, and having evidence for the epidemic.
As a child, I was always on the chubby side. A typical day after school would involve letting my body sink into the couch, eating snacks and watching television. There would always be commercials regarding child obesity, and the inactivity of children. At first, these commercials were irrelevant to me. In result of being exposed to the frequent commercials, the message was drilled into my head. The ad that spoke
Having a child that is obese brings different feelings to people. Some see it as it’s their fault because they want to eat so much. In no way is it the children’s fault as they eat what the parents give them. When you see a child that can’t speak a word but knows how to open a cupboard or the refrigerator to get food it should classify as obese. Most cases of obesity don’t start later, in life there are some cases, but it is usually from young age. The parents of these kids should be punished for making their kids become like this. Thousands of young children know who the spokes person for the fast-food chains are but can’t answer simple questions about famous people. Child obesity in America is getting worse before it will become
Parents should be aware that if they let their kids eat fast fastfood or any unhealthy food, the kid would end up being overweight. Parents should teach kids the importance of eating right in order to prevent obesity later in life. Kids usually pay attention on what they eat. They only get distracted by the media and what the media advertise, and all they advertise are usually unhealthy food. The kids often let their parents buy them what they see in the media. Instead the parents should buy snacks which are healthier version. Brody also tates in her article that “for those who become obese by age 10 or 11, he or his co-authors said, family based programs are needed to keep overweight from carrying over into adult hands” (20”. This shows that not only adults are eating unhealthy but even the kids are eating junk food that causes them to be overweight. The parents aren't really doing anything to stop the kids from eating unhealthy food. Parents should start to raise their kids in a proper way and feed them healthy food and encourage the kids to go
Beginning off with, childhood obesity has more than doubled and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. This has become a big issue that has become bigger than we needed it to become. Children at or above 95th percentile have obesity, that is more than it should have raised to. In Childhood Obesity Facts paragraph 1 it states “The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970’s.” This shows how children have been obese since the 1970’s. Children showed obesity from 20+ years and is still continued till this day, this shows relevant. Children has been irresponsibly eating for a very long time, this shows sufficient. This appears as credible because it came from a helpful and educational
First, media coverage of childhood obesity can be seen from organizations such as the Childhood Obesity Foundation. The organization’s purpose is “…to lead a societal shift toward healthy eating and active lifestyles to promote childhood healthy weights and the resulting physical and emotional impacts” (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). The mission statement promotes the idea that childhood obesity could cause unhappiness and sickness for children, and that society needs to change in order to address the issue. A section on the website addresses the current obesogenic environment of society, which it describes as “…places that encourage people to eat unhealthily and not exercise enough” (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). The foundation frames society as a negative environment that encourages unhealthy behaviors, requiring changes to a more health-focused society. Furthermore, the website has a section regarding the complications of childhood
The nature of childhood, has changed significantly over time. Reference for definitions The word ‘childhood’ can be defined as being ‘the period during which a person is a child’ and is seen as the period between birth and adolesance. Childhood is built up by a range of different aspects for example: development socially, educationally etc. The idea of childhood being in crisis, can relate to a range of different issues i.e. family breakdown, increase in technology, culture/society changes etc. A crisis can be defined as being a time of intense difficulty. Whether childhood is in crisis or not it is extremely important to support a child’s development through childhood. Childhood is made up of three
Forty years ago in America childhood obesity was rarely a topic of conversation. A survey done in the early 1970s showed that 6.1% of children between the ages 12 and 19 were overweight. Eight years later the same survey was done and 17.4% were considered overweight (Iannelli). “Childhood obesity epidemic in America is now a confirmed fact since the number of overweight or obese children has more than tripled during the last 30 years” (Childhood Obesity Epidemic). “Over the last 20 years, the prevalence of obesity in children aged 6 to 11 years has tripled from 6.5% to 19.6%” (Childhood Obesity Epidemic). As a nation statistics should be alarming. Why are American children today so obese?
In the last fifty years, obesity amongst adults in the US has been a recognized fact, but has neglected to acknowledge is that children are also suffering from this as well. Thirty percent of American children are considered to be obese/overweight. (SOURCE). If this fact is shocking what is even more shocking is the grim future that this very real issue is going to lead to. Although this is a very recognized and highly publicized issue in the US it hasn 't changed that the US is ranked number five in the world for childhood obesity. (SOURCE) This shocking statistic is obviously not even enough to influence the American people to enact a change in this area. So what will it take? Both serious and satirical pieces such as "Childhood Obesity Facts." and "If We Don 't Stop Childhood Obesity, Our Fat Toddlers Could Turn Into Fat Fucks" explore the various complications that are possible later in life and can cause serious complications down the road along with the gravity of this issue and its various ramifications; while also using different rhetorical strategies in order to do so.
Speaker’s Credibility: Childhood Obesity is not something we should ignore and brush aside. It’s something we should take action in and do something about it.
After watching Fed Up, I think there are a lot of things that parents of the obese children are doing wrong. First of all, the parents should not be buying any junk food for their obese child even when it says “low-fat” or “100% Natural” on the item’s package. To me, that’s all lies. For example, instead of feeding them, cereals high in sugar in the morning, they should consider cereal rich in fiber. At least, that is what I will do if I had an obese child because food rich in fiber have many benefits to a healthy life style. Studies show that “high fiber cereal eaters had a 34% lower risk of death from diabetes and a 15% reduced risk of death from cancer” (Christensen). I am also very annoyed with the obese children who do not see themselves being the central issue as a result of the obesity. They blame the sugar is addicting and I definitely agree with that. Some also said that the food in the school cafeteria is unhealthy, and that can also be true.
In order to impede the epidemic of childhood obesity, the actual causes of the problem need to be evaluated and dissected. Obesity in children is becoming a huge problem in American society. In the past three decades, the rate of overweight children has increased by 300%. This is an alarming rate that is only climbing higher. Every member in society should take steps to becoming healthier. This would help the present generations as well as future generations to come. The lifestyle of Americans keeps us too busy to be a healthy society.
