The green sea turtle, also known as the Chelonia Midas has been named endangered. The green sea turtle is part of the reptile family. The turtles are usually up to five feet, the Chelonia Midas is around the same size of a six foot man. Their weight can get up to 700 pounds. It has a very large shell that weighs the majority of the turtle's weight. It does not get the name green sea turtle from the color of the shell. The shell is actually a brown or olive color depending on its habitat. The skin of the turtle is green, and that’s where it gets its name (“Green Sea Turtle”). Chelonia mydas usually stay around the coastline, islands, bays, and protected shores. Green sea turtles are rarely seen on the land. The female turtles use United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hawaii beaches to lay their eggs (“Sea Turtle Conservancy”). Green …show more content…

Male adult turtles can reproduce every year, but the female turtles reproduce three or four years. After / mating, the female turtle finds a beach that they want to lay their eggs and dig holes in the ground. After the holes are dug, she lays her eggs. The female turtle can lay more than seventy- five to two hundred. After two months the eggs are caught. They have to try and make it to the water before another predator attack them on their way there. After they make it to the water, they wait twenty to twenty- five years before they can reproduce (“Sea Turtle Conservancy”). In 1986, scientist figured out that the temperature of the turtle’s eggs determined the sex of the baby turtles. This was when they pronounced endangered. Still to this day, the green sea turtles are still endangered (“Green Sea Turtle”). Hopefully in the near future, the green sea turtle will no longer be endangered.
