Smoke thickens the air; the bleats and screams of terrified animals assail their ears; their senses are bombarded with scathing noises. In all the forest there is but one haven of peace, the four friends' small grotto. Their enclave of peace is small, barely large enough for the four friends to sit comfortably, but contains water enough for several days if needed. In order to keep Stacy, a spoiled rich girl, from fretting, Preston suggests each person tells three of their best stories, with the stipulation that the stories must be either entirely true or totally false, in hopes that the fire will have diminished by the end of the tales.

Preston is a quiet man, tall and broad, with thick brown hair and a luxorious beard, strong facial features on a hard, tanned face. He is used to spending long hours in the woods with only his beagle and his axe for company. He likes being alone because it gives him ample amounts of time to think. He always passes his ideas by his best friend, his beagle Argos, who is named after the dog in The Odyssey, to see whether or not they're good. Preston includes Argos in all areas of his life, the two friends are inseparable. Her father's money has earned her a place in the "Rich Girls," a sorority despised by all the sensible people in town. Although she is one of the "Rich Girls", she has never really fit in. She just wants to be herself around her friends, and not hide behind something achieved by someone
