Eeshna Nath Cultural Paper: The Fosters The Fosters is a family drama series that premiered in 2013 on Freeform. The Fosters’ family includes a mix of biological and adopted members because of the lesbian couple that chose to adopt. The show has been running for five seasons and handles many controversial topics. It portrays LGBTQ+ themes in ways that connect with their audience. It tackles difficult real life issues and has, not to mention, a catchy theme song, The Fosters is a well-produced and scripted show that handles social issues, like sexual identity, and illegal immigration. These ideas are expressed by the show in a creative, compassionate way. One of the shows that paved the way for other shows to talk about sexuality was the …show more content…
The crossdresser then appeared in a total of three episodes in the show and brought discussion on violence towards the LGBTQ+ community. Although it was not a major role depicted in the show, it still brought up the idea that the gender people get biologically may not coincide with what someone’s gender identity is. This was just a small pebble dropped in a large pond, but it did pave way for other shows to build upon adding more LGBTQ+ themes in shows. The Fosters depicts Callie Foster’s (the main character) boyfriend, Aaron, as a strong and humble man. He happens to be transgender and the show does a good job of showing a new perspective. If he did not say he was transgender, no one would know he was. Discrimination against transgendered people is a real, current issue. Since trans people do not conform to society norms, which is sticking to what biological sex you are, they face discrimination, like being fired from jobs, facing violence, being bullied, and being denied access to healthcare. In The Fosters, season five, episode seven, as Callie Foster is struggling to find her confidence, Aaron describes himself to be more comfortable after his change. He …show more content…
Immigration, especially in the United States, has been a highly debated issue. Many feel that immigrants are helpful towards the overall economy of the country, while others think immigrants threaten their way of living, and undermine the national identity of the US. As a result of the controversy, creators of the policies in the US have to consider both sides when making new laws. In The Fosters, season five, episode nine, Callie and other students on campus are seen protesting a speaker who wants to speak to the college about sending immigrants back to countries that some have never even been to. Ximena, Callie’s undocumented friend, is leading the protest, and does not let people chanting, “Go back to your country!”, tear her down. Callie flees the scene at the sign of violence because she cannot risk getting arrested. Her other foster siblings are getting ready for their senior prom, when the school cancels it, due to recent events, so Mariana Foster takes it into her own hand and saves the prom. Brandon finds out his girlfriend has been hiding the fact that she has Leukemia and wants to make her prom night special. Callie apologizes to Ximena about leaving the protest and Ximena expresses her frustration about the situation. She knows how much her parents are working, all the jobs no one else wants to do, so she can go to college. All she wants is citizenship, but she
The life for a child in foster care is much different than any other child’s. While growing up children look up to their father or mother. They aspire to be like them and follow in their footsteps. For the children placed in foster care all they see is that their parents could not take care of them. They will not have the memoires of growing up with their family, but instead memories of the different homes they have been transferred too. Foster parents love and care for all of the children that come into their homes, but it’s hard for the children to accept someone who moves in and out of their lives.
The Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) states that there are 427,910 children in the foster care system as of September 30, 2015. This report focuses on number of those that are in foster care system, it shows statistics on race, gender, reason for placement, and age; yet it lacks to include those foster children that are from the LGBT community. Therefore, this paper is going to demonstrate the historical aspect of LBGT youth in foster care, the prevalence of the issues that the foster care system has, current services that are available, and a personal analysis on this topic.
Of course I knew what is was it was where children were taken away from their parents because they couldn't give them a healthy life, and if the parents showed signs of improvement they were gonna have the chance to keep their child. This short movie made me realize all the things a child can go through when going through the hardship of finding a new home. First of all the trauma a child can go through with abusive irresponsible children since children who have little support by their parents tend to not have a bright future. Second children go through the hassle of going from house to house looking for a new or temporary home, but as shown in the the movie a lot of the foster parents do not know how to handle a child's behavior when they are acting up and think they are behaving badly because they want to, but in fact may act poorly because they may be reminded of previous encounters they had with their biological parents that made them emotional. For example Zoe the foster child is given a dress by her foster mom and instead of accepting it like most young girls would it reminds her of when her father was being abusive to her mother and how her father was saying negative things about her mothers dress, therefore she did not accept it.. Obviously when her other foster parents saw the behavior Zoe showed when she was given the dress they would punish her. But this foster mom that gave her
Furthermore, Stef who is the police officer is not excited to have her living with them, however, she allows it to give Stef happiness. Stef wants to try to help Callie out and provide her stability. Callie has been in numerous foster homes, unable to find one where she was safe. In addition, in her previous home, Callie has been beaten and mistreated. Correspondingly, the Fosters provide Callie with a place to sleep, other kids for support, and food. Comparatively, even though Callie was not beaten here and had shelter, she still did not feel at home, for her brother was not with
In short, The Fosters has taught me a lot about myself and about others around me. I felt bad about my friends who were not accepted by society before gay marriage was legalized. Even after gay marriage was legalized, some people still find it a bit “terrifying” when they see gay couples out in public. Students get bullied by others in school after knowing that those specific students are orphan childs. There are a lot of stereotyping going around with certain races. People blame Asian people for bad driving, or relate tacos back to Hispanic people. This is supposed to be America. We are a diverse country where those who are not accepted in their own country can come to our country to start a new life and be accepted. Even after they migrate
Foster children are given a bad repetition because their biological family don’t raise them. They have to explain why their last names are different from the people they call parents, sisters, and brothers. There is no room for acceptance anywhere within the home or outside of it. So often I have heard people say they would not take on the responsibility caring for other people’s children especially girls. The females ruin marriages, have lots of kids with different men and live off welfare and food stamps. They make nothing of their lives.
America idolizes youth, dubbing it a time of freedom, innocence, and incorruptible joy. However, approximately 400,000 foster kids in the US might understand childhood as something very different (Children’s Bureau). To them, youth may represent chains to an unstable, corrupt system as it unsuccessfully works to decide their futures. It may also represent a period of indefinite circumstances, isolation, and continual change. The Foster Care crisis isn’t just a few poor government policies that affect the tangible elements of our society; it is a crisis that impacts the personal lives of many individuals. Minorities, Women, LGTB have all fought to ensure their rightful place and voice in society. Now it’s up to America to fight for those who cannot start their own movements, create their own bills, and overcome their silence. What we do for our foster children will reflect the true nature of our values. What we do for our foster children, we do for ourselves.
Foster care provides a home for children who have been abandoned, neglected or abused, and who temporarily are not able to live at home. During the time that the child lives in a foster home, the foster parents provide the same care that the children's own parents would have provided.
Over the last few years, television has made it its mission to take topics relevant to our society and incorporate them as best as it could into the scripts. Amongst those TV shows is The Fosters, a drama aiming at incorporating issues that today’s generation deals with in their scripts, never shying from the controversy that ensues at times. From LGBTQ issues to rape, the drama has been known for not holding back and for mirroring today’s youth in a very concrete, relatable way.
In this episode of The Fosters, the show revolved around 8 main primates (5 females and 3 males) and their interaction with each other as well as others around them such as co-workers and friends. 6 of these primates are family, 2 parents and 4 siblings, and the other 2 are in a romantic relationship with a sibling. They all live in suburban area in San Diego, California and often find themselves in difficult situations together which leads to arguments.
Many children who are placed in foster care are typical are either victims of child abuse and neglect, parents who unfortunally can’t care for them permanently or temporary, or just children whom were abandoned. Foster care is defined as, “a system in which a minor has been placed into a ward, group home, or private home of a state-certified caregiver, referred to as a "foster parent". The placement of the child is normally arranged through the government or a social service agency.” Foster Care has been around ever since the nineteenth century, but wasn’t really publicized as it should have been because American ideal vision of a family during the time was nuclear family (which consist of mother, father, children) but over the past decade things have changed and foster care is also shaping that view also. Social policy tends to ignore what they don't publicize. Children of immigrants were often out on the street looking for work. They were sent on "orphan trains" and sent out west. Back in the 1800s, no one talked about any sexual abuse children might have suffered on their journey out west. Some of the slight problems in the early system were addressed, but the cause of the system still existed.
