Rainsford came to a cliff and he was trapped by Zaroff and his hounds. Rainsford had no choice, he didn't want to surrender because he know he would get killed. There was only one choice left and it was to jump off the cliff into the water. He waited to Zaroff got close and the he jumped into the roaring waters. General Zaroff was surprised when he did that, but he knew that he wasn't going to come back because he would be to scared to. When Rainsford fell off the yacht he found the house that Zaroff was living in. Zaroff was holding “a long-barreled revolver” and he was aiming it directly at “Rainsford's [torso]” (Connell 23). A man named Rainsford fell over board from a ship he was on. Rainsford meets a general named Zaroff. Both are hunters but Zaroff hunts more than animals, he hunts men as well for sport. He tells Rainsford that he will be hunting him. He is chased and builds obstacles for Zaroff and his dogs. He kills one of his dogs and builds a nife trap and also kills Ivan. Thinking he won Rainsford sneaks in his room and sleeps in his bed, meaning he has killed the general (Zaroff).
The general was telling him about all the humans he has hunted and plans on hunting. Later on Rainsford said to the general “I can’t believe you are serious, General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke.” What the general is saying to Rainsford is that he is serious. Rainsford can not believe it and most people would not. It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
The General goes back to his mansion pleased that he has killed Rainsford. But Rainsford returns alive and finds his way back to the general. At first glance, a person could conclude Zaroff was dead, but from a first-person view, any man can see he was slowly with a light heart moving.
