Chapter 1: Open your Eyes
1. Jay Heinrich wrote this book to enlighten the reader on the forgotten art of rhetoric. In reading this book, one will better their arguing skills and their manipulation of their audience. By introducing readers to rhetoric they can better their ability to use logic, persuasion, and emotion while developing an argument. This will ultimately better their communication skills in their personal lives, workplaces, and in day to day events. 2. Heinrich’s experiment is to live a whole day without any persuasion. Heinrich failed at his experiment because persuasion and manipulation are ingrained in our being. Multiple times a day people manipulate a situation to their advantage. In Heinrich’s case, it was subconsciously pretending to write a list in order to have his wife bring him breakfast or inviting his son to eat a dinner he does not like, with the goal of not going to dinner at all. Heinrich did not fail, rather he simply exercised his basic human urges to satisfy his ego. It is human nature to desire, however through the usage of rhetoric one can achieve their desires without others knowing.

Heinrich describes seduction as manipulation which leads to a consensus. Seduction in rhetorical strategy does not necessarily rely on sex, but on desire. In an argument one must desire an outcome in order to come to a consensus. It is through manipulation that one party will cause the other to desire an action. Seduction is the differentiating factor between fighting and arguing, as the usage of seduction will cause one to support an argument rather than oppose it and talk aimlessly.
