The training professionals in turn partner individuals with mental health problems with trained service dogs. In fact, these animals can reach prices of $17,000 or more! (FAQ) However, there is a way around this roadblock that prevents many in desperate need of a service animal; owners can train the animals themselves before taking the required test to certify the animal as a service dog. I am Maria, director of the C-K9 Rescue a non-profit dog rescue. I am a local behaviorist/trainer where over 98% of her behavioral clients are rescued dogs. Many local rescues/shelters transport dogs from shelters without evaluation and those dogs are immediately adopted out or put into foster-based networks. This system can endanger dogs, families, and community who adopt these dogs. I have had clientele who have been severely bitten by many dogs as a result of inadequate or non-existent evaluations done on rescue dogs.

Questions arise concerning the treatment of therapy dogs when visiting patients and whether animal-assisted therapy really works at all; however, those who disagree aren’t looking at the big picture. It is often said that a dog is a man’s best friend. In the last 14,000 years, dogs have accompanied man by helping him hunt, guard, and protect. Although canine superstars such as Lassie, Old Yeller, and Rin Tin Tin portray the perfect dog we all want in our lives, these ideals are far from the truth. Many first-time dog owners expect dogs to know behaviors such as how to walk on a leash, not bite, not destroy the house, and in addition to many others. In reality, dogs must be trained on what their handler wants them to do. It is
There are dogs in this world that are more than just 'man 's best friend '. For some, they are the world 's greatest teachers. Most of my childhood memories involve dogs. Being a dog owner has impacted my life in ways I never dreamed. Surprisingly, some of the most important life lessons I’ve learned are from dogs. Instead of teaching my dogs tricks, they have taught me tricks about life: how to maintain my health, love unconditionally, and live fearlessly.
