Assignment 5A – Shouting at Cars
Our late modern society is full of prejudices. Some minorities are frowned upon, and are described as socially deprived. This is shown in both bullying and exclusion, but our actions towards these people have more fatal consequences than we know, and can result in the fact that some of the excluded in our community presents a bad behavior. Such an example is presented in the short story, “Shouting at Cars” by Adam Marek from 2013. The reader is here presented to the fate of a troll, who has been looked down on his entire life.
The troll has an important part in the narrative. The narrator, a small child, has different views on the troll. It comes down to the context of their meeting: “Them being there cast the

It is shown in the very beginning, where the family is forced to bring a hamper to the troll every Christmas. They aren’t doing it with pleasure. Nor do they carry it cheerfully. The troll stands out from any other creature in our world. By appearance, the troll is described as big and gloomy with a grey color of the skin, tussocks on his nose and wearing a blue tarpaulin as a poncho. Also, the troll never speaks or shows any gratitude for the family’s present. In that way, it also stands out in its conductions, which underlines the contrast between the troll and an educated citizen even more. The troll symbolizes our society’s black sheep, and the prejudices that follow them. It has its civil rights, which is shown when it dies: “I stayed in my room all afternoon while Magda called Dad, and Dad went to identify the body. I don’t know why they needed him to do it. There’s no one else with a body like that.” (line 74-75). But in the social context, no one cares about the troll, and doesn’t want to get near him. This is also shown in the fear of the family’s line of actions towards the troll. Their prejudices are a barrier for getting to know the troll, and maybe realize that he has something more to offer. This treat-ment is perhaps the reason why he is acting strange with the child narrator, and even criminal
During this time period the need for natural resources were in high demand. As the transcontinental railroad spread west to California, towns became popping up around the railroad, called boom towns. The people living in these towns discovered the natural resources, such as mining for gold, silver, iron ore, copper, and timber. People would come and mine for the resources and once the resource was gone, the miners would leave, and these boom towns would then become “ghost” towns. Also in the west, there was a large supply of land. In 1862, farmers and ranchers moved out to the west. The land in the west was very cheap, and farmers were able to buy large amount of land, for a low price. The Homestead Act of 1862, said that farmers would receive
One of the obvious archetypes in this poem is “Good versus Evil.” The citizens of Whoville are thought to be good because they love Christmas and only needed each other to celebrate it. The Grinch is considered to be evil for his plain’s to foil Christmas. His attitude and character do not help his case
It has been thoroughly thought over what current topic or issue that people experience in most environments today, at both a micro and macro level that would be able to be examined and have come to the decision of looking at the most widely discussed subject, prejudice. All people are affected by prejudice in one way or another and it can impact on people's lives depending on what form it has taken. Also to be able to acknowledge that all people can be prejudices and see this is the first step to overcoming it.. The question that has been decided upon is that of “What types of prejudice do we see commonly today and how do they affect an individual at a micro and macro level?”
Though excelling in means of pathos and ethos, the argument has a shortage of strong logical evidence such as statistics to convince wavering readers. The paper also lacks a strong thesis and structural argument, which is necessary when writing to both a wavering and hostile audience. Bauer's unique position as the mother of a daughter who has down syndrome would potentially allow her to exploit the emotion of readers specifically those in a wavering audience, though her stories are deficient of an in depth description of the pain and hardships contributed directly to the term retard. The argument contains factors that would allow it to be fully effective such as a touching personal experience and connection to both the media and the United States dilemma of discrimination and derogatory language. Despite including these positive aspects for a strong argument the author fails to seek a solution, take a fighting stand, and deliver a passionate
In the New Yorker article, “Troublemakers” by Malcolm Gladwell a claim is made about people who are quick to make bad generalizations, follow stereotypes and profile. Gladwell introduces the article with a horrific story of a vicious Pitbull attack on a two-and-a half year-old boy, resulting in a law being passed to ban all pitbulls. This issue is important because this ban on pitbulls means they are unnecessarily being punished for traits they may or may not have. Just like a person may be profiled and punished for a crime they may or may not have committed. According to Gladwell ,we all tend to make decisions based off of inaccurate stereotypes like “overweight middle-aged men to heart-attack risk” or “young men to bad driving”(3).
Throughout history, different people are treated with isolation and discrimination. This is shown in our culture through songs, movies, television shows, and other forms of art in every corner of the world. For example, the movie and song “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” parallels the oppression of minorities, specifically with the ‘Code Talkers,’ in the novel, Code Talkers, by Chester Nez, during World War II.
A fine line is drawn between whether a person is “right” or “wrong”, “innocent or guilty” solely based on one factor. When people interact in a social environment, they tend to be tense and anxious around those from another racial group. To which having a mentality of posturing an inappropriate comment or action may cause offense or discomfort to the other. Those who take part in another person’s culture will later express fewer prejudices toward members of that ethnic group. To what is considered a “black sheep” in a herd, they are often ostracized from society and are not wanted; however, some people accept differences in individuals for the good of society to the extent of achieving tolerances as seen by Atticus’ interactions with Tom Robinson in Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, along with Juror 3’s viewpoint of the jury in Rose’s 12 Angry Men, and Sergei’s dilemma in What, of this, Goldfish, Would you Wish? by Keret.
In the texts and videos the authors and directors explore the idea of accepting others by providing evidence of discrimination and the negative impact of it when there are riots, beatings and segregation.
The fact that prejudice prevents us from seeing the good that lies beyond a person’s appearance, religion or race is represented to a great extent in The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. The novel is set in 1930s Germany during the times of rising anti-Semitism when Adolf Hitler, the leader of the ruling Nazi Party put his discriminatory ideologies into practice and began persecuting people of the Jewish race. This persecution is known as the Holocaust in which 17 million Jews were killed by the Nazi Party who described them as a shame upon Germany even though over 100,000 Jews fought for the country in WW1. The Book Thief is riddled with examples of racial prejudice whether it’s when a Jewish shopkeeper is beaten in the name of German patriotism or when the character of
Prejudices exist in every measure, against every person, and everywhere across the world. People are inclined to judge without reason, and often hold conviction to the initial judgment made. Despite worldwide attempts to decrease these preconceptions, people must suffer through being the target on very frequent occasions. In the U.S., occurred the Civil Rights Movement as well as the movement to end Women’s Suffrage. This did not eliminate all biases against those groups, nor did the Americans with Disabilities Act. People are still isolated because of physical
In today’s society, we face prejudice every day in many forms. Most people in today’s society have either been victims of prejudice or are guilty of exhibiting prejudice towards others.
Whirlwind I, the precursor to modern-day computers, was completed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Servomechanisms Laboratory in 1951 (Tom Rosko). MIT was found on April 10, 1861 by William Barton Rogers, two days before the beginning of Civil War. The first building of MIT was built in 1866 at Boston’s Back Bay,and by the end of the century, the buildings scattered throughout Copley Square. In 1916, all of the MIT moved to Cambridge, except for The School of Architecture which remained in Boston, during a three-day alumni reunion (MIT Libraries). MIT endeavor to “advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century” (MIT About).
Explanations that justify the use of racism directly relates to differential treatment of minority groups and contributes to racism’s existence as an unstoppable social problem. The foundations of these explanations are based on the common misunderstanding of the definition of race. Thus, problems that tend to concentrate in one race are mistakenly judged as “race problems”. This judgement leads to the establishment of a system of inequality between a superior race and inferior races. However, the logic behind these explanations don’t account for the true reasoning behind minority individuals value status. In fact, these explanations contribute to minority individuals’ further struggle in life.

During the Reformation, Martin Luther found problems within the Roman Catholic Church and decided that he no longer desired to follow their ways. As a follower of Christ, he instead turned to the Bible to rediscover truths that the Church had twisted. Now, because of Luther’s then radical ideology, we have two different bodies of Christ: the Protestant Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Today, there are many differences between them concerning fundamental beliefs and how the church should operate.
