“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will, and a lack to change”-Vince Lombardi. Central Dewitt’s football program usually has a tradition of great success and excellent morals. Unfortunately, in the 2014 and 2015 football season they have a combined record of 5-13, which does not live up to the standards of the DeWitt community. There are many problems circulating the football program, but most involve the lack of experience in coaching. Central Dewitt ‘s losing football record for the past two seasons can be solved by coaches properly developing their athletes, incorporating new offensive and defensive strategies, and increasing player participation. …show more content…
Including, beating their arch rivals the Maquoketa Cardinal 47 of the 83 times playing them (CDSfootball). The Sabers currently run an offense called the triple-option. In this more dynamic and elaborate offense, they leave opponents unblocked making them choose to tackle the quarterback or the fullback. If they tackle the fullback, the quarterback then has the option to keep it himself or pitch it to the running back thus giving us the triple-option. Head coach Mike Miller brought the offense to Central Dewitt in 2012 during his debut season. The sabers saw great success in Miller’s first season going 8-4, winning the district six title and rushing for 3,644 yards (CDSfootball). It did not take long for opposing coaches to find ways to counter this run dominant offense. In coach Millers previous two seasons the sabers have only run for a combined total 3,700 yards (CDSfootball). This is not the only problem that lies within Central Sabers schemes. The Sabers run a base 4-3 defense, which means there are 4 down lineman and 3 linebackers. Although this is a popular defense, in modern football you need to run multiple defenses to throw off opposing offenses. The sabers do not run multiple defenses, and this allows offenses to get in a rhythm, and as a result the sabers allowed an average of 36 points a game in 2015 (quicksstats). The need for change is evident in the Central Sabers program. The real question is how to change the schemes, so the Sabers can get back on their winning
Coach Gary Gaines, Permian high football coach, showed a key role in leadership. Once Boobie Miles was injured, he knew in his head that he had lost one of his best players just looking at him in pain from the sidelines. Once the team got in the locker rooms he checked on Miles and the doctor said his knee was not in shape to continue playing; Gaines took it upon himself to, instead of telling his team that Miles was in critical condition, told them that he was going to be alright and instead of worrying just keep playing the best they have been and that they can get through it as a team. Whether the team knew he was lying or not, he was still positive about losing a player and continued to coach as he did (page number here). In addition, Coach
One of the biggest events that take place in this town every year is when the Chino Hills High Husky football team takes on their cross- town rival, the Ayala Bulldogs aka the Battle of the Bone. The first time we played Ayala was in 2004. It was the seventh game of the season and the Huskies were just coming off their first loss to Glendora. The Huskies were losing at the half. The third quarter the Huskies got the lead with two early touchdowns, and never gave it up; The Huskies won 21-16. The following year the Huskies went down 7-0 after the first quarter, but then turned it around and scored two touchdowns in the second, and then added on another in the third and the Huskies won 20-7. The Next year was the same story as the Husky offense
Rhetorical Analysis of “As Bad as They Wanna Be” In a world of commercialization and advertisement, college sports usually provide a welcomed oasis from the furnace of money-hungry advertisers. This, however, may not be true forever. In the past few years, an increase in advertisements and deals between colleges and corporations has become noticeable. In the article “As Bad as They Wanna Be,” the author and speaker Thad Williamson effectively describes his concern for the UNC Tar Heels and the amount of commercialism and advertisement that is appearing around college sports.
While BYU is a physical team, the Cougars have struggled to play good pass and run defense at the same time.
One of the most significant influences upon high school athletes can often be found in professional athletes; these experts can offer an example to live up to, and advice to hardworking student athletes. As Thomas Jefferson football players looked forward to Winter Break, they received a special surprise, offering them inspiration and thoughts to carry them through their off-season, through the visit of famed Broncos player DeMarcus Ware. On Tuesday, December 8th, in addition to providing a stellar pep-talk and kind words to TJ’s players, Ware also presented an abundance of new equipment to TJ’s football team, leaving many players already eager to begin the new season.
Additionally, the games were segregated with the white reserved section having the best seats in the stadium. The tradition eventually ended in the mid-1960s when the schools became a part of the University Interscholastic League (UIL), which meant that the season ended before Thanksgiving. The rivalry was never the same after the end of this beloved tradition; however, in recent years there have been attempts to reignite the passion within the rivalry with the help of Nike, the athletic brand, who recently released a video on Twitter that showcased the Yates and Wheatley High School football teams and how impactful football is on both schools in their recovery from Hurricane Harvey. Although the rivalry is not as potent as it once
Joe Ehrmann describes how he has developed his philosophy of coaching by relating the story of his life in his youth, high school and in college describing two different types of coaches he had played for. The first are coaches who were impersonal, authoritarian, and sometimes abusive which he calls transactional coaches; this is in contrast to the humane coaches he calls transformative coaches. Coaches must face this responsibility because we all remember our coaches. “This is the awesome power and responsibility of coaching: You give your players memories, for better or for worse that stay with them until the day they die” (Ehrmann, 2011 p 46-47). Joe Erhmann goes on to ask, “What is the moral and ethical composition of their program?
In 2005, Spelman College, a private historically Black college (HBCU) in Atlanta, GA exclusively for women were admitted full membership into the NCAA as a division III school under the Great South Atlantic Conference (GSAC) (Spelman College Athletics). During Spelman’s tenure with athletics, the school provided 7 varsity teams. These 7 sports included basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. However, in 2012, Spelman College’s then president, Dr. Beverly Tatum, announced that the college would end it tenure with athletics and focus on bringing wellness to the entire college community rather than just to a select few of its students. Therefore, at the end of the 2012 athletic season, Spelman College parted
Coach Steve Rocker is one of the most successful high school basketball coaches in Kentucky’s history. Coach Rocker was very successful in previous years. Strangely, this year was very different for him. For the first time in his professional life, he is falling short of his expectations, the community expectations, and the team’s expectations. His team lost a lot of games, but most importantly the boys had no motivation or desire to bring the team out of the rut they found themselves. His players have lost their will to win, their love for their teammates, and their passion to play. Coach Rocker’s motivational methods that have always worked before and resulted in success are now failing, and he doesn’t know why. He argues that his players have become selfish and bored with winning because they have been so successful in previous years. “And there’s no question that my guys have lost their drive to win because they’ve won so much in the past. Now all they want is individual ‘wins’…which just doesn’t cut it on a team” (Gongwer, 2010, p. 17).
The University of Nevada Reno’s Football program officially started fifty years ago in the October of 1966. At the same time the team was established, Mackay stadium was built which seated only 7,500 people at the time. After numerous amounts of renovations, the stadium now seats 26,000 people and the football games are very loud and exciting. Being a football player and student myself, I get to hear what other people outside the football program perceive of us as around campus when we win, lose, or just in general about the football program. Most comments and accusations I have heard have been false and negatively based. What most people do not see is the hardwork and dedication it takes to be apart of the football program and the impact it has on the coaching staff, the community, and also, the inseparable bond it creates between the players.
Belleville West High School have a lot of talented students. Football people the way of life for most of the belleville west high school students. Football is the most commonly talked about sport at belleville west high school.
Although I am no longer part of the squad, I just want to let all of you know that I hope all goes well this season. Yes, there will be people doubting you guys because of the fact that the senior offensive line, 6 starters on defense, and the SLC’S best quarterback are now all gone. You must all persevere and overcome adversity. As I am writing this letter, you guys are 3-1 on the season. Two weeks ago you guys were ranked #10 in the state for Division 3 which is phenomenal so congrats for that! I was very proud when I read that on wissports. 2016 Seniors, last year we started out 3-0 and had all the momentum in the conference. We lost on homecoming to our rival, Elkhorn, and from there everything went downhill. We lost 5
All over social media, especially Twitter, the Missouri State football team announced that they would not play in any further games until the current President Tim Wolfe was to resign or be fired. The situation sounds harsh but the reason for it is there has been racism around the campus and no one is doing a thing about it. This protest has made a huge impact and attention to the school as well as the President. I believe that what they were doing as a team was very powerful. If I were the president I would have done things a little differently.
Coach Dix believes that this style of coaching helps him motivate his young team. Being that crazy, funny, heady, and intense coach gets the young teens pumped and ready to run through a wall for him. When we talked about the difficult situations he has had to endure while coaching, Dix described two situations that occurred during his tenure at East Hall; Coach Dix mentioned a time when his star player who happened to win the Georgia Player of the year the previous year, kicked a ball during practice and broke out a window in the gym. He stated this was a difficult and sticky situation because the team played its big rival in two days. He said he did not sleep well the next few nights because of the impact a suspension would have on his squad. Another situation Dix had to deal with was a parent during a game, walked to the bench, grabbed their son and told the player to get dressed, we’re transferring from this school. Dix said that this was new territory for him and at that time he did not know what to do. To conclude the interview, I asked Dix two final questions. I asked him what were his ultimate goals for his team and what advice would he give to a first year coach? “Championships and graduation,” Coach Dix stated. As for advice for a first year coach, Dix said “Preparation was KEY.” “Great coaches are always prepared for anything and everything!”
For a lot of kids, it’s not until it’s all said and done, and they look back on it several years later, that they realize the difference the sport made in their lives. They are proud of playing the game. Have you ever met anybody who accomplished playing four years of high school football, and at the end of that run said, ‘Man, I wish I wouldn’t have played’? It doesn’t get said. Football players aren’t perfect. Nobody is. But millions of former players, one by one, can recount the life-altering principles they learned from football. They know the value of football is the values in football. That’s why high school football – and particularly high school coaches – play such a vital role in our society. Our football coaches are on the front lines of the battle for the hearts and minds of the boys in our society.
