Violence has created a lot of destruction all around the world. There is terrorism, shootings, sexual assault, and many more kinds of violence. All around the world newspapers, television broadcasts, magazines and the media report various acts of violence and it is really disturbing to see and hear about the crimes that are being committed on a day to day. According to the American Psychological Association violence is defined as an extreme form of aggression, such as assault, rape or murder. Many individuals justify using violence as a result of their needs not being met. Earle Leonard Nelson who was also known as “The Gorilla Killer” or “The Dark Strangler”, was America’s first known serial killer. He killed approximately 25 females by first gaining their trust and then strangling them to death. After killing his victims, he usually engaged in sexual intercourse with their bodies and hid their bodies under their beds. At the age of 10 Earle collided with a street car which caused him to remain unconscious for six days. The collision caused a severe head injury that when he finally gained consciousness his behavior quickly made him unrecognizable. Frontal Lobe Impairment & Treatment One possible cause that best explains his behavior would have to be frontal lobe impairment. The frontal lobe is crucial because it allows people to regulate emotions and behavior as well as other functions. The frontal lobe is vulnerable to any kind of damage. Damage to the frontal lobe can
Throughout history, violence has led to destruction of societies, the oppression of cultures, the murder of innocents and the needless destruction of valuable property; but when justified, violence has positive outcomes such as the birth of civilisations, the defeat of evil and the liberation of the oppressed. Violence is often justified on two occasions, when you are defending yourself or others from an act of violence, or as a last resort if you are being threatened. While using violence on these occasions is justified, when not warranted violence is a malicious force that should never be unleashed.
If after all this time people still think that violence is something natural, we have to start thinking seriously. Remember violence is a problem! Because it hurts others which it would it would have suddenly been basically caused by a confusion or a life problem most of the times, so let’s help prevent it. You surely don’t want yourself or a relative found on the violent
At first, one would not realize the pervasiveness of violence. However, after having discussed this topic over the semester, violence has come to be referred to as an epidemic. After just a few lectures, we began analyzing different texts and learned how society has normalized the use of violence by transforming violent acts into forms of entertainment through various media outlets; in turn, causing desensitization to violence. Through media exposure and awareness of existing societal roles, I have come to realize that violence is a bigger issue than initially thought. Moreover, the opinions that I originally held at the beginning of this course have come to change after viewing topics through an enlightened outlook.
When this cycle of violence continues, it can also affect the child witnessing the abuse. This can lead to cycle of abuse that is carried on for generation. Native American men often state that as they grew up, they saw their mothers being beaten by their fathers. Cultural beliefs are also related to why the rates of domestic abuse and violence is a higher rate on the reservation. Often victims do not speak out when they are being assaulted; because it is seen that an accusation against one person as an accusation against their entire family. This can make it difficult to end the abuse cycle.
Our textbook talks about very important points, whether we like it or not we all see violence on our everyday life through movies and television. Our children are exposed to violence and this is very concerning, media portrays violence as trivial, justified or funny. “Media violence desensitizes people to real violence, and at the same time built schemas of the world as a dangerous, scary place where a person must be aggressive in order to survive” (Crawford, 2011, p.401). Technology such as video games teaches children how to be aggressive. “By the time a U.S child finishes elementary school, he or she has seen more than 100,000 acts of violence on TV, including 8,000 murders” (Crawford, 2011, p.378). Because of the media contributing to
Violence has been around for centuries; the first documented act of violence that comes to my mind is the story of Cain and Abel, where Cain murders Abel with a rock because he is jealous. As well as commending wars in the name of peace. Society has been saturating our children in violent acts, through television, movies and games. Thus creating a culture that popularizes violence, making it appear sensational. Furthermore, the constant media reports on violent crime sensationalize these acts.
Violence has become a huge part of everyone's lives. Violence is everywhere, now in days, you can't even turn on the TV without hearing something about a shooting or a huge massacre. Can you even imagine walking into the school and halfway through the day have to go on a lockdown because there's someone trying to harm everyone in the school?
The nature of violence can be in form of sexual or psychological deprivation and neglect. People become violent due to some reasons. The individual might be frustrated, sad or just general hot tempered. An individual’s belief might also be one of the cause. A person who acts in an aggressive manner is believed to be a violent person which is an acceptable way to deal with his or her anger. The person might have grown into a family where violence is part of how the family interacts with each other.
1. The internet says that violence means the behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Violence is more than that. To me violence means to bring harm or exert negativity to someone whether it’s verbally, physically, emotionally, sexually, psychologically, spiritually, culturally, and financially or neglect. Violence comes in different forms and to just define it as being a physical thing is presenting or forming a problem in our society today. We tend to make something like this as just one thing when violence can be exerted in different ways. A person can be violent towards someone by just cursing at them or by verbally insulting them. Violence comes any different forms. You don’t have to physically hit someone to be violent. If people would think of violence as being more than just physical violence would decrease because we as people would be aware of violence and try to prevent from acting out violent acts. There are different things or factors that label something as being a sort of violent act. I would consider something as being violent due to the content that is being used by users. It wouldn’t matter who it is being presented towards because it doesn’t matter. Violence is Violence. I would say that it is very hard to label something as being violent because violence acts occur frequently more times than usually around friends when playing. For an example when two females or males are talking to one another and they
If one was to turn on the local, nationwide, or even global news channel most likely the top story of the day will be of a violent nature. No matter where you live or where you go violence follows you. Every city has the same stories of burglary, every state has the same stories of murder, and every country has the same stories of war. You cannot run from violence and you certainly cannot hide from it. Even in some of the safest places cases of violence has occurred. Violence is a form of nature that encompasses our world as we know it.
Globally there is an estimate of 7.5 billion people worldwide. Annually 1.6 million lose their lives due to violence, stated in a recent World Health Organization article. Now imagine how many people survive and continue to endure another individual’s violent behavior. Violence is a form of aggression due to instantaneously behavior in a particular situation. There are many shapes and forms of violence, like physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. These different factors contribute in creating what we know as violence. Whether you have a perfect life and do not come across violence in your life, violence occurs everywhere, no matter the time, place, and or person.
1. Describe five behavior changes that you can make to specifically protect yourself against a violent attack when you are outside alone. (pg. 543)
Let us study what violence really is, why we become violent, and what we achieve by that. Violence really means unlawful exercise of physical force, or it may be even verbal abuses. Now, let us analyze why we become violent; mostly it has been seen that we become violent when we do not get what we want, or what we demand: whether our demand is right or wrong is a different matter. Maybe, in this context it can be said that, at least sometimes, we do get excited and resort to violence without having enough reason or provocation. However, it is equally true that, sometimes, there really is no other way to present our demands.
Violence is something that has been in human culture for a long time. From Colonization times to the founding of America, violence has been displayed and accepted in the process. For example, When Europeans started to colonize America, violence towards Native Americans was used and accepted in order to achieve success. Violent methods have been regularly used in order for people and countries to achieve higher success in what they seek. In protecting a nation from other threats, violence has been the accepted way to handle disputes between nations through war. Through war from past history, violence is nothing new to us. Violence has always been a means to solving disputes. Disputes are something common humans have dealt with when conflicts arise between one another. Violence has been incorporated into disputes in order to resolve conflicts. From individuals settling individual disputes, political parties achieving success, to rivalry gangs fighting over territory, violence has been a means to an end in more then one situation in cultural history. In an article by Dirk Enzmenn on comparing youth violence trends in Europe, he found that Russia was the most accepting country towards using violence as a way to resolve issues. Youth have been witnesses to this violence and surrounded by it their whole lives. We in general have all been surrounded by a violent culture for as long as we can remember.
Violence, is one of the most popular issues in the whole world today. It is a dreadful behavior that is repeated among people and may cause serious problems that leads to horrifying situations. It comes in many different types, from verbal abuse to brutal violence. Generally violence is awful. It can affect almost anyone and may also result injuries, depression, and death. There is no happy ending or resolution when discussing the complex problem of violence. Violence is a wrong activity to do and could end up hurting others, so because of that we all must do something about to stop it so violence will not continue on. Why? There are three main topics about the types, how it can affect others, and mainly how we can stop it.
