Joe was raised by a physically abusive father who abused him throughout his childhood. With this factor in Joe’s life, a cycle of violence has been developed where he now abuses his own children and shows heavy jealousy when his wife, Mary, tries to breastfeed their six month old son. Mary grew up with an insecure mother and she has taken this trait and incorporated it into her adult and married life. Despite being warned by those around her that Joe needs help, she carries on the relationship with Joe possibly because of her insecurity. She may be of the persuasion that she will not be able to find another husband especially since her mother told her that ‘men cannot love’ and this is her second marriage. She may be afraid to leave or get
Even thought both were working full time and physically absent most of the time, the difference in their parenting style had influenced their kid’s life in different way. Unlike Joy, who was strict and fixed rules and clear expectations for her son, Mary had a permissive and uninvolved parenting style. Mary did not teach her son much discipline, she was lenient and intervened minimally only when she faced serious problem. She even gave her son unclear message about what is inappropriate, by the role model she played. Especially when Wes found the weed on her closet (59).In the contrary, Joy fixed clear rules at home, like her reaction when Wes punched his sister, she said while talking to her husband,<< Wes, he needs to learn what is acceptable and what is not>>

According to Pecora, Sanders, Wilson, English, Puckett & Rudlang-Perman (2014), “Every year in the USA, about 695,000 unique children are confirmed as victims of child maltreatment (US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Children’s Bureau 2011) (p. 321). Such startling statistics suggest that child abuse is not just a public health issue; it is an epidemic. However, research reveals that prevention is possible through a collaborative effort made by parents, schools, the government, social services, and the
The ultimate long-term mission for Prevent Child Abuse New Jersey is to prevent the abuse and neglect of the nation’s children. For completing the mission, two objectives are placed so that the goal can be obtained. Services; such as counseling, human services, home visiting and education are provided to children and families, and are one of the two objectives that is expected to change. The purpose of the services is to lower the potential chance of neglect or child abuse, and lower childhood trauma because of neglect or abuse. The second objective is to have more banners, displays, and brochures sent out for families and people. Information is sent out, so that people would be more aware of child abuse and/or neglect.
“If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse one”. This statement means the same way a mother gets help to take care of her child, the same way a serious offense will get swept under the bridge because of your role in society. I agree with this statement because in the movie police officers, family members, lawyers, administrators, and even other newspaper reporters knew about the sexual assaults with priests and little children.
Joe Kanty is very loving and kind hearted to his wife, Lena, because he loves her. The following article, “Love and lust are among the most instinctive emotions experienced by human beings”, clearly states the type of bond that Joe has towards Lena which is a loving bond that some people will never possess (Kwon, Han 1). However, Lena is insanely in love with her mistress, Mr. Spunk, whom is capable of getting whatever he wants or wishes, because of the fear he places in others hearts. Love makes individuals react a certain way to situations which is why Joe decides to follow Mr. Spunk and Ms. Lena from the lounging general store to try and win his love back. With the help of narrators,
The father of a child who was found wandering alone in Londonderry Thursday has been arrested.
Joe marries her so he can have a pretty wife by his side who he can demonstrate his superiority over. As the single most powerful man in Eatonville, the town that he took initiative of, he expects his wife to present herself as above everyone else. This means she can’t participate in regular talk with the people of the town, and she has to obey Joe’s commands because she is his property. However, towards the end of Joe’s life, Janie publicly rants her true feelings to Joe. This decision shows her growth towards self realization. She defends herself against Joe’s insults of her being old. Janie finally acts out, expressing her feelings towards Joe’s unfair treatment to her. Her strength in acting for herself begins to emerge once she forces Joe to listen to her feelings of their marriage. This is evident when she tears off her handkerchief and lets down her hair. This is symbolic of her freedom. Joe forced her to tie up her hair for his sake, but now releasing it, Janie shows that she will no longer let other people control
He was a well known hard working man. Janie wanted to love him but he would never let her, him not letting her love him is what made the marriage miserable. He wouldn't let her go to special events that were going on in the town he made her wear a hair band to cover up her hair so other men couldn't look at it. This quote is after her and Jody get into a fight, “The years took all the fight out of Janie’s face. For a while she thought it was gone from her soul”(76). Janie is getting tired of Joe not letting her do anything and not letting her express her love for him, he treats her as if she is just a trophy wife. Joe kept Janie on a tight leash when it came to her freedom she was usually working at the store or at home. In this quote Joe has just past away, “Before she slept that night she burnt up every one of her head rags and went about the house next morning with her hair in one thick braid swinging well below her waist”(89). Janie finally feels free she can let her hair down she doesn't have to wear head rags anymore she finally feels like she can go do what she wants. This shows that you can just be hardworking to be a good husband you have to allow your wife to show you love.Janie’s third and final marriage was to Tea Cake. Tea Cake was the only husband that was hardworking, honest, and had a mutual love with Janie. Janie and Tea Cake met not to long after Joe’s death. Janie liked Tea Cake from the first time she
Once the rift appears in their fidelity, both of them are very confused. Missie May has been caught by Joe in bed with Otis D. Slemmons, the bragging rich man. Specifically because this offense occurred in the bedroom, it is a threat to their future happiness. Parents and other trusted caregivers have been abusing and neglecting children, likely since the early days of man. However, over the past half-century, the United States government has encouraged state governments to focus more efforts on child welfare. The Child Abuse Prevention & Treatment Act defined the term ?child abuse and neglect? as meaning, at a minimum:
Mary begins the story as a doting housewife going through her daily routine with her husband. She is content to sit in his company silently until he begins a conversation. Everything is going as usual until he goes “ slowly to get himself another drink” while telling Mary to “sit down” (Dahl 1). This shocks Mary as she is used to getting things for him. After downing his second drink, her husband coldly informs her that he is leaving her and the child. This brutal news prompts the first change in Mary, from loving wife to emotionless and detached from everything.
As the story goes on, the readers begin to see a love triangle forming. You realize that Marian has feelings for Shane on page 65 when Bob overhears her talking with Shane. Marian says, “Don’t go, Shane. Joe needs you. More than ever now…it’s only fair to say it. I need you too”. There are apparent feelings shown between Marian and Shane, but just the same Marian is still obviously in love with her husband Joe. You see that Marian loves and supports Shane in almost in the same way she cares for Joe. For a while, it almost seems that Marian has two husbands because the bond between her and both men is so strong. The strange thing however, is that Joe knows that Marian has feelings for Shane. And because Joe knows that she still loves him and does not have any desire to have a physical relationship with Shane, he is okay with it. You know that Joe knows that Marian has feelings for Shane is on page 80. Marian is taking care of Shane after the fight in the bar and is so proud of both Shane and Joe. Joe says to Marian when he is holding her, “ Do you think I don’t know Marian? Don’t fret yourself; I’m man enough to know a better when his trail meets mine. Whatever happens will be alright”. Even though Joe knows what is going on, his respect for Shane makes him okay with it.
Joe Christmas’s distain for women began in the orphanage or even a little before. Joe most likely had abandonment issues because he never knew his mother and believed that she did not want him. Milly tried to run away with her Mexican lover and her unborn child to get away from her father (Faulkner 354-355). Christmas never did find out that Milly Hines, his mother, did want him, before his grandfather let her die. When Christmas arrived at the orphanage, made a friend named Alice, who he grew up with. She was a mother figure to him, she used to help him get dressed as a child. (Faulkner 156) Then one day in the middle of the night she left him abruptly. He never knew where she went or why she left, all Christmas knew was that she left him. These women gave Christmas the thought that every woman that he cared about or could care about will eventually abandon him.
