A Major Challenge to Post-Secondary Education in Canada Feeling that Queen’s university had recognized my potential when awarding me the Chancellor’s scholarship, combined with the fact that it offers a great science program and the large financial assistance, my decision to attend Queen’s was made a little simpler. However, for many Canadian students, the decision of whether or not to pursue a post-secondary education, and if so which post-secondary option to take, is greatly influenced by their financial support and the balance between short term and long term expectations. Although student loans including OSAP and other entrance scholarships may partially cover the tuition cost, the overall cost including accommodations remains fairly high. In addition, with increasing competition for high end professions and seeing graduates struggle to find a job, students feel less motivated to study towards their passion and instead pursue jobs providing short term satisfaction. By hosting various interactive events, including Dinner in the Dark, where guests eat a meal in complete darkness to raise awareness about visual impairment, we wish to develop a more inclusive community by empowering the social model of disabilities. As a long term goal, I aim to continue pursuing my passion for a career in medicine.
