The author of the book Flush, by Carl Hiaasen, means something with the above statement. He means that they are too many bystanders in the world and too little upstanders, that too many people avoid any bad thing in their world because they think it simply isn't there, or that it will go away if they wish it so. This is shown in the second sentence of the quote, and with my own experience this year, with the new president and company; the second sentence states, “Too many people these days, they just turn their backs or close their eyes, pretending everything is wonderful in the world.” This explains how Carl Hiaasen means that people in the world are too focused on the ‘good’ parts of the world, and that they need to learn to open their eyes and see all the terrible things in the world, because otherwise those terrible things will keep on happening all over, because people ignore them. …show more content…
What's worse is that these politicians’ supporters believe it too; we are denying the bad parts of our leaders because again, we don’t want to believe it. And honestly, no one d0es! No one wants to think that we’ve destroyed this planet all by ourselves, and we are all to blame. The story, Payback Time written by Carl Deuker, manages to summarize a couple of months of Mitch True’s life. Mitch is an overweight teenager who desperately tries to make new friends. He is interested journalism and being a school news reporter. Throughout the story Mitch encounters some bullying issues. He constantly gets beat up and made fun of. On a couple of occasions, Mitch was ready to fight back for himself. Although one can try to hold back for so long, the clear statement that Deuker tries to get across is that revenge can take control of a human’s mind.
In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, a thirteen year old boy named Brian is flying in a plane to visit his father, when the pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes. Brian survives the crash and is forced to live in the wilderness of the Canadian forest. Throughout this book, the author, Gary Paulsen, shows time and time again that no matter how rough things get, never give up. “He ripped at it until it released… somehow he pulled himself out” (29). This is an example from the beginning of the story from when Brian crash landed in a lake and tore himself out.

When Brian Robeson first crashed into the Canadian wilderness, he had to change his actions and personality for him to be able to survive in the wild, especially when there are 10 moose per square foot in Canada. The Nazi leader was named Adolf Hitler. Hirsch Grunstein was one of the people in the Holocaust and his famous quote was, “I hated being locked up.”

Living in 21th century is like living in a glass box. We are living in society that needs only a few clicks to get information of others.
In the novel Hatchet, Gary Paulsen portrays many different scenes that are significant to the story. Near the middle of the story Brian is all alone in the wilderness where he has to find food and water to try to survive the challenges he is facing while being all alone. While out looking for food comes across a bear “ It was black, with a cinnamon-colored nose, not twenty feet from him and big” (Paulsen 29). The encounter with the bear is significant because the reader can see that not only does the character have to worry about food, he has to worry about the animals in the forest with him.
As humans we all change and by changing, other people have to deal with it. In the novel Tangerine, Edward Bloor Introduces Paul Fisher. Paul Fisher wears glasses so thick he looks like a bug-eyed alien. But he's not so blind that he can't see there are some very unusual things about his family. Paul and his family moved to a new house in Tangerine County, Florida.
For this essay, my chosen character is Paul Fisher. At the beginning of the novel, Paul is scared and tense. At school, Joey tells Paul how he is afraid of a lot of things and how people treat him like a dog. He mentions how he is afraid of Erik and the girls. This takes place in the present, talking about how he has problems all the time.
In Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, the character, Werner Pfennig, can be identified as a hero. Werner was an undersized boy with ears that stick out and hair that was “snowy, milky, [and] chalky (24)”. His image was the Nazi ideal; but his ideas were not. Werner questioned everything and was not appeased by simple solutions. Werner greatly valued the truth, even though he was incredibly impressionable at such a young age. Werner Pfennig can be identified as a hero due to his abnormal childhood as an orphan, his unwilling departure from home, and his bittersweet reward of absolution.
Walter Payton once said "If you ask me how I want to be remembered, it is as a winner. You know what a winner is? A winner is somebody who has given his best effort, who has tried the hardest they possibly can, who has utilized every ounce of energy and strength within them to accomplish something. It doesn't mean that they accomplished it or failed, it means that they've given it their best. That's a winner." This meaningful quote suggests that being a winner doesn't necessarily mean that you have to win every single game or award; all you have to do to be a winner is show that you put effort and that you actually tried to win. This quote was very relevant to Walter Payton according to Don Yaegar, the author of Walter Payton's autobiography
If you had children, how would you treat them? Would you love and care for them with all of your heart like they deserve?(pathos) Mayella Ewell did not get the privilege to be loved and cared for like she deserved. Bob Ewell, her father, was an example of an awful dad, who raped, beat, took the little money he had earned, and used it towards alcohol, instead of buying the necessities for his children. He is a drunk, extremely racist, and on top of all that, a horrible dad, which clearly makes him the worst character from all of the books we have read.

My mama sweet Ms. Darlene, may she rest in peace, was killed when I was 8 and ever since I been staying with my grandparents because Pops lifestyle wasn’t stable for an 8 year old.
Uncle Axel (Open-minded, adventurous, diligent and caring) He is David's beloved uncle, best friend, confidant and mentor. On page 29 David says, " He -- and it was lucky it was he, and no one else -- happened to come upon me when I was talking to her." , David was relieved because he felt that his Uncle Axel was no threat to him. He would not expose his secret or punish him. Axel's reaction to David's gift is quite refreshing amongst all the talk of blasphemy, mutants and deviation.

On page 336 it states, “Javert felt that something horrible was penetrating his soul, admiration for a convict. Repose first for a galley slave can that be possible? He shuddered at it yet could not shake it off… Javert bent his head and looked. All was black. He could distinguish nothing. He heard a frothing sound; but he did not see the river…”. This quote by Victor Hugo emphasizes on this unusual emotion of goodness arousing within Javert.
