The accord was designed to bring Quebec into the constitution while keeping the people who live there as comfortable as possible. They were “in fear of losing their identity within the English-speaking majority by giving it status as a distinct society.” Quebec never got their way. Canada is considered pretty liberal, and has introduced some of the most liberal, and controversial social policies. The legalization of Marijuana happened in 2001, and was made legal for the terminally or chronically ill. It took 2 years to get it moving, but by July 2003, marijuana was considered a “prescription”. That same year, Ontario and British Columbia legalized same-sex marriage, and later in 2004 other provinces followed in their footsteps. In 2005, Canada legalized same-sex marriage throughout the whole country! This made them one of the four nations to do

He won the election as the leader of the Progressive Conservative in June 1983. Brian had a lot he wanted to change, one of those things was making trade easier with Canada so that Canada’s economy would improve or at least stay stable. As a prime minister Brian had spent a lot of time helping Canada improve and since his election date, this took place between the years 1984 to 1993. Canada began as british colonies that settled people along the west coast. From there, Canada began to develop its own identity as its people became less reliant on Britain. Over 200 years later, Canada was officially founded on July 1st, 1867. As a new country, it was not as experienced compared to other independent nation ie. the British Empire. Although at the beginning Canada was technically part of the British Empire, Canada had proved itself to be a powerful ally in war. Canada’s influence on major international wars was significant through their skill and military prowess, along with supplying their respective allies with resources that enabled the soldiers to continue fighting on, especially in wars such as WW1,WW2 and the Korean war.
Canada was a very unstable country 150 years ago, with two countries fighting over the land. John A MacDonald helped make Canada a very strong and stable country. The French took over the land of Canada and called it New France. Later on, he British took control of New France and later on, called it British North America. One big part of Canadian history was developing a Responsible government to take care of its’ citizens.
Canada is similar to the United States was established as a colonial settler state by European colonial powers. France and England fought over the land for many years and in 1759 the British finally won in the battle of the Plains of Abraham (Quebec City).
In 1963 the Quebecois movement for greater sovereignty started upon the election of the Parti Quebecois with it’s Quebec first policies after its rise following the failures of the current government led by Brian Mulroney after his handling of the meech lake accord. Mulroney’s way of dealing with this was to win Quebec over through Canada’s “recogniz[ing] the province of Québec as a distinct society within Canada.” these were widely accepted amongst Canadians until people such as Pierre Elliott Trudeau began to speak out against because of all the federal power these reforms would take away and give to the provincial
Canada was ceded by New France and came under British rule the year 1763 with ‘Treaty of Paris’. Many provinces of Canada then became part of the British Empire and it soon started expanding. At first, France saw Aboriginal people as allies and relied on them for trade wealth and their own survival. After the transfer of power from French to British, diplomatic relations and alliances between them began to cease (http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/aboriginal-french-relations/). The history of Aboriginal policy is characterized by the presence of both Britain and France as colonizing powers. It was assumed by the Canadian government that the Aboriginal people are hopeless and they will never be able to adapt to the new
Nothing could have better complimented the end of WW1 than the 1920s, also known as the roaring twenties. This era is most notable for its help in revolutionizing Canada into a new modern age and help shape Canada into what it is today. This was a time of many new remarkable inventions like the automobile, the radio, and the telephone which all had advanced and change how we live today. This era was also when Canada took the necessary steps in achieving greater autonomy from Britain. Canadians believed that Canada should no longer be controlled by a European power, so in the decades after war, Canada took steps toward independence. Canada joined the League of Nations in 1919. This was one of the first times canada took independent action in cooperation with a
As time goes on, some countries become more relevant in the global sphere while others start to fade away. Canada is a country that only becomes more relevant as time goes on. Since being granted full sovereignty, Canada has had a growing role as a major world player. Much of their international growth has to do with its close ties to the United States and the United Kingdom. However, the country has also undergone huge change and refocusing on a domestic level. With influence from both Europe and the United States, Canada has a very unique system of governing. This paper will focus on a few major areas of Canada. It will look into the history of Canada, the structure of its government, its politics, and many of the major issues it faces today.
Throughout Canadian history, we experienced many events that made our country both stronger and weaker. At times, we were looked upon as a nation with great potential, great peacekeeping service, and even a nation where its citizens were proud to be Canadian. Although, Canada did show signs of negativity as some of our actions made us look like terrible people and overall others had a “weak” view of the nation. During the 20th century, there were however 3 men that did prove that they did what they did not just only for themselves, but for the commonwealth of the population. These 3 men, William Lyon Mackenzie King, Lester Bowles Pearson, and Pierre Elliot Trudeau shaped

This group fought “to achieve Quebec independence by resorting to terrorism, if necessary” (Historica). Trudeau, as the Prime Minister at this time, went through very difficult times during this time period. Canada was splitting itself apart before his eyes, an action he would not tolerate. Despite the measures he had to take, Trudeau managed to bring the country together with the Official Language Act, where students in school were expected to learn French. This gave the French the significance they wanted, and liberated the
Canada has been an independent nation for over 150 years, so it makes sense that there has been numerous changes in the government, since the government has to reflect its society, and as time changes so does its government. However, some ideologies do not believe it should change in order to keep up with its time. Oxford Dictionary states that the definition of an ideology is “A system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.” There are various forms of political ideologies; conservatism and liberalism are being brought up for discussion about what makes conservatives and liberals so different in Canada. Throughout the years, the Canadian government has rotated between liberalism and conservatism, these ideologies share some similarities; however, it can be argued that the significant differences are their political, social, and economic views.
