When I applied to volunteer at Camp PALS, I had no idea how much my life could change in one week. PALS is a camp for young adults with down syndrome, but it is so much more. It provides an immersive experience where individuals with down syndrome and their peers can grow and create transformative friendships. PALS exceeded my expectations and ignited my passion to work with people who have special needs. Throughout middle and high school I have been heavily involved as the president of Best Buddies and Athletes Helping Athletes, which are organizations that work with our special needs students at school. Seeing their faces light up in the hallways when they see you and the impact your friendship has on their lives is extremely heartwarming.
In Key Club, we do activities with the Kiwanis group and for our community. A great program that we do is the mentoring program for the kids in the elementary to connect the high schoolers with the elementary kids. My mentees have all been great kids, but not all of them have the best home life. This gives me more drive to brighten their day anyway I can. For me, it has been a very gratifying experience to see my mentees become better students and kids because they have someone positive to look up to.
I am a member of my high school’s student council, Girl Scouts, and also the chaplain of my school’s drama club.
During my highschool career, I have been apart of many groups that one might not commonly associate with each other. I am currently apart of the Waxahachie chapter of the FFA, the Waxahachie Theatre Arts Program, and the Waxahachie Swim Team. These organizations are not commonly associated with one another, and it is due to the types of people who take part in each. Being apart of all of these groups has prepared me for my future goals by allowing me to work with several different groups of people, and they have taught me many different life lessons which will help me to succeed in accomplishing my lifetime goals. Our FFA chapter has a greenhouse that I currently manage.
Over the past year, I have served my school and community in many different ways. Whether it be through volunteering or participating in organizations that work to make changes in the lives of others. I try to stay involved in my environment. Currently, I am a student at Rockford Lutheran High School. With the multitude of clubs, my school offers, I am able to interact with other club members to promote student participation. Every year we participate in drives and fundraisers. In Key Club, each year we put together solider boxes. We collect a variety of small items and send hand packaged boxes to our fighting soldiers, as a gift for christmas. Other drives that I partake in are the canned food drives for the local food pantries, and the clothing drives to give winter clothing to those less fortunate. This helps to provide this vulnerable population with warmth during the cold winter months.
BETA Club and National Honor Society promote academic excellence and service, therefore I have helped in several events. For example, I gathered boxes filled with toys for impoverished children. Also, I helped host a dinner to honor local veterans in an effort to give thanks to those who have sacrificed everything in the name of service. Interact Club has also given me ample opportunities to help my community, from setting up a food drive to making blankets for Project Linus. These clubs instilled a strong sense of service within me and motivated me to find more ways to which to help my town.
In the fall, we took a field trip to Feed My Starving Children. An organization that packs and ships nutritional food packages to people overseas and other areas of poverty. Outside of school, I have done many things for the Bulldogs Baseball & Softball association. I umpire games for the 8u softball teams
Some of my favorite memories made in high school thus far are due to my involvement in the Best Buddies program. Best Buddies is offered across the United States and is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending the exclusion of people with special needs. I joined the program my freshman year and was selected my junior year of high school to be in the Best Buddies class where I get to develop a closer relationship with all of the buddies. In total there are about twenty-five special needs kids that attend my school. I am proud to attend a school that welcomes these kids and always makes sure to include them in major school events and extracurricular activities. Recently, Tyler, one of the buddies, scored a touchdown while playing with our varsity football team. This was a proud moment for the Best Buddies class because we wanted him to have this amazing experience.
The final mast of school and community involvement was catalyzed when I joined Key Club as a freshman. Finding a passion for service and leadership, it rapidly became my primary focus in deepening my high school experience. Key Club inspired me to search for further opportunities for leadership and involvement, leading me to join Student Council, Relay for Life, and so forth. Through my various executive positions, I have not only improved my own character and qualities, but also inspired others around me to do the
My high school years have been filled with many great memories; it is safe to say that I had an enjoyable high school experience. Some of my most unforgettable moments of my high school career have been in Beta Club. In 9th grade, I joined the Beta Club at my school. I joined because I knew that this club was an organization for those who love to serve others, and I know that decision will have a lasting impact on my life as well as on others’ lives. I was elected President of the Beta Club at my school in 11th grade. I led my club of about 40 members throughout the year as we took part in various service activities such as: trash pickup for Adopt a Highway, sponsoring a child for the holidays, and visiting local elementary schools to read
Throughout high school, I have participated in numerous school sports and activities. Cross county had a tremendous impact on my life and the lessons I have learned from the sport I will perpetually cherish. Another activity I have been a part of for three years is yearbook. I am the senior editor of the yearbook and have, thus, learned to engage my leadership skills. Additionally, choir is an activity I am passionate about. Singing is an escape from the chaos of my day and I revel in the joy it brings me. Furthermore, my two friends and I brought forth the idea of a cross country ski club at our school, and we initiated its formation.
Most recently I have organized a project that helps students and staff in Parkland, Florida that were affected by the school shooting. Group of friends wrote letters expressing our support and condolences. This was the
Throughout high school, I have been lucky to have the opportunity to serve my community and school. I have been involved with service through my church, as a summer camp counselor, school ambassador, and the Cleveland Clinic. In the summer going into my sophomore year, I was a Junior Ambassador at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. During this summer I spent six weeks serving patients and their families.
At BC I was blessed with a coach that belonged to a church that needed help setting up prior to the services on Sunday. To help out with this work he would take a group of players each month to set up. This allowed me to grow with my teammates, but also to meet new people. Also during my freshman year I was able to help the community in a way I never had before. I was told about helping at the concession stand at the local Bridgewater baseball fields. I knew this was beneficial because it would give the parents a chance to watch their kids without worrying about the concession stand. I was also able to meet new people and see the community that I was new too.
Being engaged in community support activities often brings the purest smiles. I am apart of Key Club and National Honor Society. Both clubs encourage students to volunteer in the community. Some of my experiences
I have been involved with in our school and our community. In our school I was nominated for head of Prom committee this year. This position is quite stressful but I would not have it any other way. I enjoy being able to help and put my mark on it for our school. I brainstorm for fundraisers, activities, and small jobs our class can do to raise money. I also get to choose our revenue, theme for prom, and decorations. I do all of this within out tight budget. I
