There are so many common secondary symptoms that it is not unusual for a patient to be treated by multiple specialists for those symptoms over a period of years before they are diagnosed with FMS. Secondary symptoms need not be present for diagnosis, and will vary from one patient to the next.

“Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals (Mayoclinic Staff, 2015).” There are several theories as to why this pain continues to exist post treatment. Researchers have postulated that this disease process amplifies painful sensations in your brain, others retain that it acts like an arthritic condition as it degrades the joint capsule and most soft tissue within. These patients can display a wide variety of symptoms ranging from sleep problems and fatigue, to pain and muscle spasms and or muscle

Many people do not realize what effects your body can get when it does not have the proper physical needs to stay strong and healthy. One of the effects is a rheumatic syndrome called FIBROMYALGIA, also known as Fibrositis and Myofasical pain syndrome. This syndrome is diagnosed with a history of at least three months of widespread pain and tenderness in eleven to eighteen of tender-point sites. These points include: the neck, the shoulders, the chest, the rib cage, the lower back, the thighs, the knees, the arms(mainly the elbows), and the buttocks. The pain in these areas is defined as an overwhelming characteristic of FIBROMYALGIA and is long standing. These points are the trigger points,
Working tax credits was introduced in 2003 along with disability element to help people stay in work or to return to work (Mitra, 2009). Then the 2005 Disability Discrimination Act came into force (Haralambos & Holborn, 2009). (Burchardt, 2000) cited that according to the European Commission (1998), people with disabilities have low levels of participation in society and the employment rate for people with disabilities is 20-30% lower than people without disabilities (Huang, 2009). From 2013 Disability Living Allowance for disabled people aged 16 to 64 will be replaced by a new Personal Independence Payment programme (Directgov). This is a non-means tested, tax free benefit. The DWP is to run a pilot scheme to help assist and reintroduce claimants back into the job market (Mitra, 2009), this will lead to employers paying short term benefits rather than the state.
With objectives surrounding social justice, changes to social policy and structures promoting equilaty, social inclusion and redressing social disadvantage. The AASW have addressed a number of issues of concern relating to the adequacy of the allowance payment system for job seekers and it’s appropriateness of the allowance payment system as a support into the work place, and the impact of the changing nature of the labour market. Amongst the reform concerns is the believe that the current newstart mutual obligations is highly categorised and discriminated between individuals seeking support. This is supported by ACCOSS (2012) finding that 60% of Newstart Allowance recipients have received the payment for over 12 months. One out of every three Newstart Allowance recipients is aged over 44. One out of every six recipients have a ‘partial work capacity’ (disability), meaning they can only work part time, but do not qualify for a Disability Support Pension. One out of every 15 recipients are a sole parent. Two out of every five recipients have less than Year 12 education. This demonstrates how diverse people on the newstart allowance are. Masking questions concerning how employable are many people on newstart especially those with
Fibromyalgia was initially thought to be a musculoskeletal syndrome since maximum of the pain was felt in the muscles and other soft tissue. However, recent studies and research have shown that fibromyalgia is a central nervous system ailment which causes uncharacteristic pain processing and leads in pain amplification. The three chief symptoms that are common to virtually everybody who struggles with fibromyalgia are pain, tiredness and sleep disorders.
Despite legislation on safeguarding adults, the care of vulnerable people, is still inadequate REF47(Betts, 2014). This chapter will attempt to outline the consequences of austerity for disability support workers (DSW) and adults with learning disabilities receiving care within supported accommodation, as these services are in crisis REF138 Hewitt and Larson (2007).
Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a musculoskeletal illness (which causes chronic pain) and a chronic fatigue disorder. It can also change sleep patterns and cause the following: digestive disorders, chronic headaches, painful menstrual periods, temperature sensitivity, morning stiffness, numbness or tingling of extremities, and even cognitive memory problems. The name fibromyalgia comes from "fibro" in Latin meaning tissue, "my" in Greek meaning muscle, and "algia" (also Greek) meaning pain.(source 5)
