The Byzantine Empire history was fasinating.Byzantium was founded by greeks in mid-600s B.C. It became a part of the Roman empire in 100 B.C.In A.D Constantine the great became the emperor of the western part of the Roman empire. He became emperor of the whole thing in 324 A.D.IN 330 A.D Constantaine made Byzantium capital of the empire because the eastern side became more important than the western side. The capital was renamed Constantinople. In 395 A.D after the death of Empoper Theodosious, the empire was divided into two parts.Germanic invaders gradually took over the western section during the 400s A.D. This area is now called West Roman Empire. Then collapsed in 476 A.D.The empire was then rebuilt and Justinian took the throne. The Byzantine Empire reached its greatest size under Justinian, who ruled from 527 A.D to 565 A.D.Justinian was determined to bring back the grandeur of the Byzantine empire by regaining territory from the west.Under his leadership,Italy,The southeastern coast of spain, and much of northern Africa were reconquered. The empire already had already conquered turkey, palestine, egypt, and syria. The Byzantines organized many laws from the ancient Romans. These many laws became known as Justinian code and ever since this set of laws have been used for many countries.Justinian also
Justinian led the Byzantine empire into the Byzantines golden age by conquering western sections of the western roman empire with his one greatest general Belisarius, collected taxes better and more efficiently than ever before and rebuilding Byzantium better than it was before after the Nika riots. (Expand) The Eastern Byzantine empire was created when Diocletian split the empire into two halves, giving rule to his good drinking buddy, Maximian. He created a government system to prolong the inevitable fall of Rome.
The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire, seen as a direct continuation of the Roman Empire, lasted approximately from 500-1450 CE. This empire proved to be a valuable city for both the Greeks as well as the Romans. Throughout history, the Aegean Sea, the Bosphorus Strait, and Constantinople all impacted Roman history through constant trade and achievements. Other than trade, perfecting the oil industry, and the construction of aqueducts, conduits, and tunnels was other main achievements.
The Byzantine Empire had many great leaders. For instance, the emperor, Justinian, wanted to revive the Roman Empire and attempted to take back the entire former empire. During his reign, Byzantine reached its maximum territorial extent. Justinian also created a new law code, the Justinian Code, that was arguably more fair than the Twelve Table of Rome. The Western Roman Empire, on the contrary, was at first split into many small territories, each led by a warlord. The empire lacked unity, order, and stability. But later on, similarly to the Byzantine emperors, rulers of the nations formed after the division of the Western Roman Empire, such as Clovis I, Charles Martel, Pepin the Short, Charlemagne, and many others accomplished many feats that made the empire greater. These emperors helped bring Christianity and stability to Europe. Charlemagne, in particular, was named the Holy Roman Emperor by the pope and he also spread Christianity by sword point. During this time period, there were advancements in education and economy and the governing system, feudalism, brought order. Thus both halves of the Roman Empire had righteous rulers that helped the empires come back from and thrive after the collapse of the Roman
The Byzantine Empire and Western Europe originally were part of the Roman Empire, but by the middle Ages(medieval times), they were very different, even though they did share some common traits, but by the 300's, the Byzantine Empire had far surpassed Western Europe in trade and economics and political unity, while both empires were having arguments over religion.
The Byzantines created a weapon, Greek Fire, no person knew how to put the fire out. The Byzantine Empire joined the 4th Crusade but in the end they lost many of their own land to the Bulgarians. They joined the religion of Eastern Orthodox and when they conquered additional empires they would make them convert to Eastern Orthodox. The Byzantine Empire was the capital city of Rome when Theodora and Justinian was the emperor. The economy in the Byzantine Empire was skyrocketing, because they were conquering other empires. Every time the Byzantines conquered other empires they got more land and money which gave them a better economy. Greek Fire was fire that came out of a portable flamethrower, the Byzantines would shoot at people that were trying
The Byzantine Empire occurred for nearly 1,125 years, and it’s one of the ultimate empires of all time. Many people have heard of the Byzantine Empire, but know only a little about the history. The Byzantine Empire became the center of a very alive civilization that sealed Greek and Roman societies while Western Europe fell into the horrible times. Even though, it became one with Rome, it continued some of Rome’s patterns, they established its own form of civilization, but does not mean it was its own separate state. The Empire protected Western Europe’s belongings until barbarism declined. Many people and historians believe that without Byzantium to protect it, Europe would have faced Islamic invaders and would have lost. Though the
There were three main groups of people in the first crusade; the Byzantine Empire, the Catholic Kingdom, and the Islamic Caliphates. The Byzantine Empire was one of the most powerful empires in the Mediterranean Basin. It was located between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and its capital was Constantinople. It followed the Roman rules; however, it was apart from the Roman Empire. Even after following Roman rules, Byzantine scholars studied ancient Greek and Roman writing. People living in the Byzantine Empire were Orthodox Christians and were led by an emperor.
The Byzantine Empire modern day Turkey was an empire that was based on its own culture coming out of the Roman Empire. It was a strong Empire that came out of the Roman Empire along with Islam and Europe, each where apart of the Roman Empire, and each survived the fall of the Roman Empire: “By 750 three distinct and nearly separate civilizations- Byzantine, European, and Islamic- crystallized in and around the territory of the old Roman Empire.” . The Byzantine Empire was considered a small country at the time, but even so it was also considered tough. As a result of Byzantine being a part of the Roman Empire before the collapse of the Roman Empire, they represent a break from the old
There are three critical empires that rose to power after the collapse of the Roman Empire; the Frankish Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Russian Empire. After the fall of the Roman civilization, waves of invaders swept Europe and the Frankish Empire became the most powerful of the Germanic tribes. They were governed by unwritten laws that were more personal than Roman laws. The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the Greek-speaking continuation of the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages. They shared the same culture and religion as Rome.
The Byzantine Empire can be traced back to 330 A.D. when the Roman emperor Constantine I decided to form a “new Rome” on the site of the ancient Greek colony of Byzantium. The century after the death of Justinian in 565 A.D. was difficult for the eastern Roman Empire. The Persians attacked, there were many rebellions and riots, Bulgars and Muslim attacked. Also plagues and famines on top of weak rulers put the eastern Roman Empire in peril. During this period, there are two fundamental changes that transformed the eastern Roman Empire into the civilization known as Byzantine. Which was taken from the word “Byzantium” which was the ancient Greek name for the capital city, Constantinople. In 600 A.D., the empire still had claims along both the
Latino Americans are facing issues with their identity because of their ethnic and racial backgrounds due to our education institutions in America. These issues result in a separation of their American and Latino culture creating two different identities but not enough of American or Latino identity to fully feel part of either culture.
The long lasting Byzantine Empire had many positive effects on the world of today. From beginning to form equality of genders to sparking the ideas of renaissance. On the other hand, it had many faults and flaws that prevented it from existing for a longer time. Nevertheless, It brought changes in laws, customs and basic human rights which we can see today.
The Byzantine Empire followed the Roman Empire, and it, also, seems meager in comparison. It had evolved from the Roman Empire, and because it was in the late stage that it was in, land had been lost, so in terms of size, the Roman Empire was superior to the Byzantine. The empire wasn t strong, either. At the start, the first ruler, Justinian, attempted to reconquer Roman lands, but in doing so, left his own land in ruins, and his conquests were lost right after his death. The Empire faced many enemies and was threatened constantly by them. Eventually, all land was lost except for the Constantinople, the rich and powerful capital city, and the land surrounding it.
The Byzantine Empire, sometimes known as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the predominantly Greek-speaking continuation of the eastern half of the Roman Empire during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Its capital city was Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), originally founded as Byzantium. It survived the 5th century fragmentation and fall of the Western Roman Empire and continued to exist for an additional thousand years until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. During most of its existence, the empire was the most powerful economic, cultural, and military force in Europe. Both "Byzantine Empire" and "Eastern Roman Empire" are historiographical terms created after the end of the realm; its citizens continued to refer to their empire
