While bacteria are living organisms that can be independent, virus are non-living organisms that require a host in order to survive. (Steckelberg 2011). Treating an infection early means you are treating your body with antibiotic drugs they don’t need thus creating resistant bacteria. Patients are given weak antibiotic drugs in order to stabilize the bacterial infection. In one study, parents of children with obvious ear infections and fever were given ear drops to treat the pain and a prescription of an antibiotic to use if the child did not get better. 90% of the parents did not fill the antibiotic prescription. Many cells that line the airway lose the correct function of the Cilia which perform the function of moving particles and fluid (mucus) over the lining surface in structures like the trachea, bronchial tubes to keep these hollow structures clear. The cilia that help in clearance of secretions are often replaced by goblet cells. The warm/moist environment of the airway along with the dormant mucus is an excellent mixture for growing bacteria. The mucus often becomes infected and discolored from the bacterial overgrowth. Having chronic bronchitis increases your risk of lung infections.
For this paper, I decided to write about bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a respiratory disease that takes on the appearance of cystic fibrosis. It is caused by the buildup of mucous causing the airways to stretch and widen and are irreversible. (American Lung Association, 2015) I chose to write about bronchiectasis because one of my dear friends has recently been diagnosed with this respiratory disease. Jasmine Coleman was born with a rare blood disorder and as a child she was always in and out of the hospital because she was more susceptible to infections, pneumonia was the main problem. Her condition was so severe that she wasn’t expected to have lived through high school, but she is still with us today. Over time her airways have built up with mucous and she began to cough up large amounts of blood. She had undergone various testing and treatments to try to figure out what was wrong. It was only recently when she was finally diagnosed with bronchiectasis. She has only 22 percent lung function and that is mainly in her left lung for her right lung is filled with blood. Bronchiectasis has been described as a chronic respiratory disease characterised by abnormal dilatation of the bronchi, and presents typically with a chronic wet productive cough in children (Laennec, 1962; Coleman et al., 1995; Welch et al., 2015). This abnormality and progression of the disease cause the airway lining where small amounts of mucus are made to produce more mucus thus becoming a reservoir for microbes (Welch et al., 2015). Based on the morphological characteristics of bronchiectasis, it is understood that Karen will be more prone to recurrent chest infections when compared to a child without bronchiectasis. However, this analogy does not cut across children who have other respiratory related conditions such as cystic fibrosis, asthma amongst others.
