Breastfeeding has been around for thousands of years and was considered normal. In today's society, breastfeeding is seen as a taboo. Women have been hassled in public for the reason that the people are not comfortable seeing mothers breastfeed. Proponents such as I feel that breastfeeding in public is appropriate because it is simply a mother meeting her child's most basic need. With babies being exposed to germs and diseases at all times, I am for breastfeeding whenever it is needed in order for them to get the health benefits, such as nutrients and antibodies, that come along with it. Breastfeeding is natural. For many people, breastfeeding in public is seen as a lack of decency and lewd; because of this negative spotlight, women have
Mother’s breastfeeding in public should be universally accepted because it would allow mothers to feed their infants without fear, allow mothers to provide the most complete form of nutrition to their babies, and desexualize the act of breastfeeding.
There are some negatively surrounded to breastfeeding too, but most of it from individual’s point-of-views. One of the major issue women feel about breastfeeding is that it makes other people feel uncomfortable in the surrounding area.
Breast-feeding was introduced in the 1800s as an alternative to avoid deadly illnesses that were travelling from Spain, Middle East and Asia. In the 1860s scientists began supplementing animals’ milk as formula; especially for mothers who were not able to breast-feed. By the twentieth century, the United States “experienced a sharp decline in breast-feeding rates for infants and toddlers” (Lerner, 2006, p. 362). The reason for decreasing rates in breast-feeding were due to breast-feeding was seen as public indecency, mothers were headed back to work, and mothers were not encourage to breast-feed their child because some people saw it embarrassing. Due to not enforcing laws that were established for breastfeeding mothers; mothers are not comfortable to breast-feed in public from indecency exposure law, allowed flexibility to feed infant during work hours and also protecting a mother’s well-being to breast-feeding in public without embarrassment.
The audience intended for this paper are mothers that have a desire to breastfeed, employers, clinicians, breastfeeding advocacy groups and federal and state legislators involved in policy change.
Breastfeeding in public has been a big thing this year for many different reasons. It's offensive to others in public because we don't live in a society today where it's okay to show our boobs or cleavage. Breast feeding should be a crime for being done in public. Its disgusting and there is so many more places to breastfeed instead of infront of everybody. Women should go in a bathroom stall for an hour and just sit there while they feed their child because that's the most sanitized place ever.
Why should you be able to show your breast in public? Alexia Garcia stated that “It is our hope at breastfeeding world lift the stigma that breasts are something that should be sexual, and instead to teach that they are for food, so the world knows the breastfeeding is normal, natural, and nothing to hide under a cover.” (Garcia) Breast are not sexual organs. As society will argue, our breasts were made for feeding. Images of sexualization breast are everywhere, from advertising to women walking down the street, if there is no breastfeeding in public, but sexualized images of breasts continued to be flaunted in public, our youth will grow up thinking that breasts are only sexual. You can cover up. Most times when you cover an infant's head
It is something nearly everyone has seen and learned from at some point. It is not rare; it’s done worldwide. It is assured that almost everyone has been breastfed by their mother so why do people have a problem if a baby wants to be fed? Many can say that since it can be an inappropriate scene for children, artificial formulas work as well, but that’s not the case for everyone. Some babies cannot take formula due to health issues or just do not want it and it can be a problem for the mothers too. In addition, there is nothing inappropriate about it. On the other hand, it just broadens the understanding of toddlers who will eventually come to ask about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding publicly should be nothing that women should have to refrain from doing and be ashamed or bashed about because necessary for them and their babies. This should not even be a problem because breastfeeding is a natural part of
Breast feeding has been in practice for a very long time, as early as 2000 BC. Before the invention of formula, bottles, and pumps this was the safest most common way for a mother to feed their infants. In fact, for 99% of human history breast milk was the sole source of nutrition for children until the age of two. In today’s society there are many different and opposing personal stand points on where or not a mother should breast feed their children. It is a very controversial topic with many variables. In breast feeding there are several benefits, reasons, and cultural effects that go into making the decision to engage or stay away from breast feeding. There is also historical causes and cultural differences that lead influence a mothers
What could possibly be wrong about a mother nourishing her child? Absolutely nothing. Many people view a woman's breasts as sexual items. The main purpose of breasts Is to breastfeed a child after birth. I came across The Milk Truck while back. The Milk Truck is there “to create a mobile breastfeeding unit that allows mothers to feed their babies in places where they have been discouraged - restaurants, shopping malls, public spaces, etc. Babies should be able to eat anywhere, and everywhere". I am absolutely for breastfeeding in public.
Breast feeding in public is a very controversial subject. Many people feel very strongly about their opinion. This is one of those recurring social debates and issues that seems to pop up quite frequently in one form or another. Is it acceptable to breastfeed in public? There are no laws against it in most states, but is it acceptable or seem presentable to do that in front of one who doesn’t want to see? It is hard to say who is right and who is wrong, when each person has a different view on life, religion and morals.
Mothers not being able to breastfeed in public? That’s absurd. Just this year a huge controversial took action with a whole lot of famous people. As a man, this issue does not directly affect me, and it would be easy for me to not weigh in. However, as a HUman, I recognize that if we are all up for our women to breastfeed in public we will have healthier babies and mothers. Therefore, mothers should be allowed to breastfeed their kids in public when and wherever they feel the need to because it's natural, they do not have to worry about stopping what they are doing, and most importantly it is biological.
However, some people think of breastfeeding as Nudity. Breasts are viewed as sexual items rather than a natural way of providing nutrients and comfort for a child. Anxiety about breastfeeding in front of other people affects breastfeeding for women with low self-confidence or who feel society disapproves of breastfeeding in public. They start to feel uncomfortable. Women should be able to have rights to legally breastfeed their babies in public. Mothers report that that they felt more comfortable breastfeeding in a park than a shopping mall. In some cases, women are asked to leave the premise due to them breastfeeding. Parents do not want to explain to their children about breastfeeding. So, they label breastfeeding in public indecent. Parents who are concerned about their children asking questions should just explain to them. This will help people understand the benefits of breastfeeding.
There is much controversy over whether women should be allowed to breastfeed in public. There are certain laws set in place to protect women when they are breastfeeding in public and there are also certain ways to disguise it if the mother feels uncomfortable (Women’s Health, 2017). Wearing clothes that are not tight fitting is a good way to disguise a mother who is breastfeeding. Button down shirts and shirts that pull up from the waste are all examples of clothes that are useful (Women’s Health, 2017). Using a blanket is also helpful and it is also advised to maybe practice breastfeeding at home so that the mother feels more comfortable doing it out in public (Women’s Health, 2017). Currently, there are forty-nine states that have laws in
From Schrock, Schwalbe, Pyke and Johnson, we know that there are two subsections in both masculinity and femininity: hegemonic, and subordinate. The hegemony in both gender identities is typically associated with the white, middle class individuals, while the subordination is associated with anything other: the people of color, the economically marginalized, and the non-heterosexuals. Because it is hard to fit into the hegemonic masculinity/femininity, those of people who do not have membership to the hegemony makes “adjustments”; through these adjustments, the definitions of specific subordinated masculinity and femininity are re-inscribed. (Schrock and Schwalbe, 2008)
Public pressure has urged health departments to recognize the significance of breastfeeding and encourage mothers to do so. There are now laws in place to protect the rights of a breastfeeding mother when feeding her child in public. A baby's need to eat cannot be determined by a set schedule. There are laws that make public breastfeeding legal and prohibit companies from banning it in the workplace.
