Summary of Findings Researchers had hypothesized that bottle fed infants were over fed more rather than their breast fed counterparts. So a study was conducted to see whether or not the infants who were bottle fed turned out to be heavier in weight than those who were breast fed. In order to conduct such a study twenty-one mothers had signed up for the testing of their infants. Within the study the mothers feed their infants the normal ways they would feed them at home and then the ways the researchers had wanted them to feed them. With the results that the researchers got back from the study they were able to calculate that the infant’s intake and rate of feeding could account for the obesity within the infants.

Having a baby and being flexible is really important when it comes to bottle feeding and breastfeeding. Bottle feeding makes this a little harder because of heating to the bottle, measuring, and sometimes trying to find a bottle. Breastfeeding make this a little easier because if you pump milk the night before, you can have up to three bottles for in the refrigerator. Sometimes if you do not have any milk in a bottle, one can also just let the baby breastfeed by sucking on the nipple. Serena Meyer and Ryan Teglene explain in their article
Very few experts disagree with the fact that breastfeeding is the optimal choice for the infant. However, decreasing breastfeeding rates raise many questions as to why mothers are not choosing the best nutritional choice for their children. Despite breast milk being the obvious choice for infant feeding due to the health, psychological, and economic benefits, many mothers still decide to feed their infants formula due to lack of knowledge and support, difficulties with breastfeeding, and social embarrassment. Changes need to be made with formula companies, medical professionals, and the public opinion of breastfeeding in order to give nursing mothers the support they deserve.
Breast-feeding is nutritionally, emotionally and physically superior for a mother and her child. “Human breast milk is not standard nor is it interchangeable with cow’s milk. It is a dynamic fluid that changes in composition to meet the needs of the baby as it grows” (“Giving your Baby... Diet.” par. #10). Breast milk contains growth factors and antibodies which stimulate the growing baby and protect it from illness such as diarrhea, ear infections, rashes, allergies, asthma, skin problems, pneumonia, respiratory illness and other serious illnesses. Breast-feeding also improves a baby’s chance of remaining healthy. These antibodies are not found in formula. They can not be sustained. Breast-fed babies are also neurodevelopmentally more
Every mother of a newborn baby must make a very personal decision when it comes to how they are going to feed their infant. I was faced with that decision 3 years ago when I had my first son who I named Ethen. It was one of the very hardest decisions I had to make. I had to consider all the good benefits of breast feeding as well as the benefits of formula bottle-feeding, but the good benefits of breastfeeding outnumbered the bottle feeding ones. I finally decided that breast feeding was the best option for my son and for myself, after extensive research on breastfeeding as well as formula feeding, and also taking a breastfeeding class where I received a lot of information which helped me
Crister uses statistic to show how the number of obesity has grown over the past few years, especially during childhood. Everyone sees this, but there are nothing they can really do about. Parents are feeding their children unhealthy food more than ever. In the text it states, “at least 25% of all American under age nineteen are overweight or obese, a figure that has doubled
In many states across the United States, laws have been passed regarding carrying guns on campus. In states where they do allow students to conceal a firearm they must meet certain criteria. For example only students over the age of 21 are able to legally carry a firearm on campus with a handgun license. As mentioned in the beginning many any states have passed this law, but across the United States there are still a lot of states who debate on whether they should allow their own students to conceal a firearm on campus. Back in the 1900’s many students had access to rifles because it was part of a sport. Across the United States hunting was a hobby for many college students. The idea of student’s being allowed to carry firearms on campus often carries different emotions for people across the United States but it’s important to understand the different arguments related to the topic because we are part of the problem. Citizens take the time to preach what is wrong with this country but in reality what are you really doing in regards to keeping our citizens safe, is anyone safe in this country, are our own college students safe when stepping foot on campus?
The question that has been debated for years is who is responsible for the children’s weight. In the articles that where researched during this paper the parents were responsible. The reason that they were responsible was because the decisions that parent make about their family and the lifestyle that they live affects their child’s health and it can also affect their health in the future. When you move out of your parent’s house you tend to mimic things that they did such as if they always bought Tide as their laundry soap when you got out on your own you probably bought Tide. Now when you were in a pinch one time you may have tried another brand because it was cheaper but for the most part you revert back to what you know. As a parent you should want your children to be as healthy as they can be a lot of parents that where talked to while researching the subject of childhood obesity seemed to just not have the knowledge about obesity.
All mothers have a choice in how they decide to raise their family. In the hospital, the health care team is supposed to be there in support to protect and to educate their patient, help them in identifying their rights, and educating them with proper and abundant information. The dilemma I am exploring specifically relates to the postpartum floor at Kaiser Walnut Creek, which is the idea of breastfeeding versus formula feeding. According to Healthy People 2020 as cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2011, 81.9% of mothers breast-fed during the early postpartum period, 60.6% until 6 months, and 34.1% until 12 months. In addition to the increasing rate of breast-feeding, there are many benefits for the newborn, as well as the mother. The newborn will have passive immunity against infections, decreased rate of sudden infant death syndrome, reduced risk of allergies and asthma, and decreased incidence of diabetes mellitus and obesity later in the future. The mother will have easier postpartum weight loss and lessens bleeding, delayed fertility, and reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer. In addition, breast-feeding is convenient and cost effective (Ladewig,
My story, “Space Glue,” will follow a female astronaut, Clarissa Collins, as she embarks on her mission to Venus for carbon dioxide mining, used primarily for the purpose of making glue. 100 years from now, Earth is still a capitalistic place, and once the carbon dioxide converter plants were created to create products such as glue and antifreeze, people went nuts for the new environmentally friendly glue that helped clean the Earth’s atmosphere. The company StuC-02 couldn’t believe their luck, but when Earth’s atmosphere went back to normal carbon dioxide levels and StuC-02 was restricted on how much they could mine, the product started to lose its edge. But space travel had finally started to become accessible to humans, so the marketing
For years women have breastfeed their children, they have allowed for women of the past to do it where ever and whenever they please. However, along with the hypersexualization of the female physique, has come a decline in the acceptability of breastfeeding in public places. “This disapproval of, or embarrassment with, breastfeeding in public is linked to the dichotomous role that the breast plays in Western society, and it is the convergence of the sexual or “aesthetic” role, and the functional role of the breast which Angier (23) Contends “disturbs and irritates” us” (Birth:Paediatric Nursing, p. 82) As a society we have over sexualized the female breast so much that now when a woman is seen feeding a child, it is no longer about etiquette and appropriateness but, about how unattractive the act is. There are several topics that could be covered over breast feeding and how great it is for the child as well as the parent. However these are the topics that will be covered in this paper on why it has become a battle for women to have the right to breastfeed in public. Sexualization of women through media, the benefits of breastfeeding, judgment of nursing mothers and how it effects the mother’s view on breastfeeding and finally the education of modern young adults on breastfeeding and how that can affect the decisions they make in the future.

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis which states: children whose parents promote healthy lifestyle choices in the home are less likely to suffer from obesity than those whose parents do not. A hypothesis is defined by Babbie (2013) as “A specified testable expectation about empirical reality that follows from a more general proposition; more generally, an expectation about the nature of things derived from a theory” (p. 33). This thesis will be tested by observing the independent variable which is: the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices by the parents, to see if it has an effect on the dependent variable. That is, an independent variable is assumed to produce the dependent variable which in this case is, the likelihood that a child will not suffer from obesity in a home when healthy lifestyle choices are promoted by the parents.
For thousands of years, breastfeeding has been the main source that women have had to feed their babies. In today’s society, however, breastfeeding has become a controversial issue due to the increased sexualization of the female body, especially women’s breasts. This same society has failed to consider the benefits that breastfeeding mothers offer to society and, most importantly, the benefits breastfeeding offers to children. It is important to consider and remember that breastfeeding is natural and nursing mothers should be free to nurse everywhere because it is their legal right, it is the first source of nutrition for their children, it eliminates excess waste in the environment, and it benefits society.
In the cemetery lies the bodies of many dead people, including Nick. Before he died, he had always been the silent type. Well at least after the ruthless and scary incident
Lee’s audience is more scholarly and his experiment’s purpose is to find a scientific correlation between the decrease in childhood metabolic syndrome (MetS) and increase in childhood obesity. Granted Lee’s work is much too formal and intense for most primary and secondary students, Hulick’s focus on teen weight gain and dieting allows her to overlook that Lee is not searching for a way to make teens healthier or lose weight, he is trying to explain what is affecting MetS in adolescents. Hulick’s article is much more likely to be seen due to the current news interest in childhood obesity, also the two authors have two very different backgrounds; Hulick is a freelance children’s writer and editor while Arthur M. Lee, Matthew J. Gurka and Mark D. DeBoer are all scholars conducting research. This difference can greatly change the authors’ motivation to write about certain topics. A freelance writer is more likely to be writing about something he is not passionate about in a way that is not as genuine to gain attention and readers.
