Breastfeeding in Public.
For years women have breastfeed their children, they have allowed for women of the past to do it where ever and whenever they please. However, along with the hypersexualization of the female physique, has come a decline in the acceptability of breastfeeding in public places. “This disapproval of, or embarrassment with, breastfeeding in public is linked to the dichotomous role that the breast plays in Western society, and it is the convergence of the sexual or “aesthetic” role, and the functional role of the breast which Angier (23) Contends “disturbs and irritates” us” (Birth:Paediatric Nursing, p. 82) As a society we have over sexualized the female breast so much that now when a woman is seen feeding a child, it is no longer about etiquette and appropriateness but, about how unattractive the act is. There are several topics that could be covered over breast feeding and how great it is for the child as well as the parent. However these are the topics that will be covered in this paper on why it has become a battle for women to have the right to breastfeed in public. Sexualization of women through media, the benefits of breastfeeding, judgment of nursing mothers and how it effects the mother’s view on breastfeeding and finally the education of modern young adults on breastfeeding and how that can affect the decisions they make in the future. The sexualization of the female figure has been happening for years; still to this day sexual figures
Early Inklings is a pun, that is, a witty essay on words that suggest double meaning. Pun in this essay is the early childhood experience John faces, right from his childhood from swatting flies to becoming a summer copyboy. Early ideas or hints (inklings) that he had throughout all these jobs until he becomes a summer copyboy, whose job was related to ink and newspaper. Yes, this is an effective title. In this essay, John connects all his experiences right from age 6 as fly swatter until age 18 as summer copyboy until he finds his element (characteristics). He says in the last line “This is my element, my inkling”. This shows that to have a job satisfaction one needs to identify his own skills and his own personal interest based on his or her characteristics.
However, the breastfeeding rate is not satisfied globally. The WBTi State of Breastfeeding in 33 Countries: 2010, Tracking Infant and Young Child Feeding Policies and Programmes Worldwide shows that there is no one country achieving the 85% percentage of breastfeeding. The data of breastfeeding rate in China is 65%. However, another report shows that exclusive breastfeeding rate at four months below 40% in metropolis in 2002. Reviewing history, from 1970s to 1990s, the trends of breastfeeding is like
Mother’s breastfeeding in public should be universally accepted because it would allow mothers to feed their infants without fear, allow mothers to provide the most complete form of nutrition to their babies, and desexualize the act of breastfeeding.
One of the lucrative activities that many colleges use are their sports. Just as their professional counterpart, crowds of people pay to see their favorite team, or in this case college, go against a rival team. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), reportedly made billions of dollars in revenue off college sports. Though, this aroused a serious issue, as none of the college athletes, the ones who made such a revenue possible, never received any of the profit. As college sports grows ever more popular, should they start paying their athletes? The answer is yes they should for the athletes as they put a lot of work, many of them live in poverty, and colleges makes profit
The U.S Constitution was created to help and protect people. Although there were positive aspects of the constitution it greatly limited democracy for all the people. If you were a slave, women or Native American at this time, the U.S Constitution was not created to help you, it had protected slaves, women, and Natives Americans from being having rights that were protected by the Constitution .
“Breast feeding rates in developed countries such as the UK, Australia and the US are typically lower than World Health Organisation goals” Parkinson (2010) 3. From a study carried out by Queensland university stressed the importance of not only the delivery of literature on how effective breastfeeding is for your babies health but that what was also needed to increase the number of breast feeders was to give personal support and explains social and environmental benefits also. When they looked at the UK in particular, Parkinson (2010) 3 stated “women already understood that breastfeeding was good for their baby, and what they needed were the tools to help them to breastfeed longer. From this it is clear that although effective and sufficient information around the benefits of the child is being addressed, there is no sufficient information or skills being given direct to the parents in order for them to carry this out for any length of time. Another piece of research was carried out in 2010 on ways to change the paradigm of breastfeeding, from encouraging promotion of breast feeding within the employment setting.
Women carry a child inside of their body for 9 straight months. Why should we take away the right for them to feed their child publicly? Yes, nudity in a public space is illegal, but not feeding your child is, too. Women across the country are enraged about people saying they feel uncomfortable about it. Who would want to feed their child in a bathroom stall? Breastfeeding is beneficial to mother and child, it's ideal for the child's health, and it's cost effective and environmentally
Others may say the woman should at least cover herself and the child when the baby is feeding. Many people view breastfeeding indecent exposure when done in public. Although a woman is allowed to breastfeed in public, that does not mean that she should. In some cases, it is understandable why a mother wants to breastfeed in public. A breastfeeding mother can choose to breastfeed for her and her baby’s health. Breast milk contains more nutrients, and it is easter for a baby to digest. For the mother, breastfeeding her baby can lower health risks, and breastfeeding helps with weight loss. In some cases, the mother may pump before she leaves home, but the bottle could have spilled or leaked out. If a mother were to excuse herself to a restroom, she would be in a very unsanitized environment for her baby to be eating. Also, other people argue the fact that the mother could cover up with a blanket or some other material, but the mother may not be able to see if the baby is latched properly or whether the baby has fallen asleep. A baby is normally not on a schedule to eat, so when the baby starts crying a mother may not always have a bottle at hand. It is more convenient for the mother if she can breastfeed her baby whenever or wherever she needs to. Breastfeeding mothers get criticized on a daily basis for wanting to nourish their baby properly. In public or in private, no one should judge another person for the decisions that one person
It is something nearly everyone has seen and learned from at some point. It is not rare; it’s done worldwide. It is assured that almost everyone has been breastfed by their mother so why do people have a problem if a baby wants to be fed? Many can say that since it can be an inappropriate scene for children, artificial formulas work as well, but that’s not the case for everyone. Some babies cannot take formula due to health issues or just do not want it and it can be a problem for the mothers too. In addition, there is nothing inappropriate about it. On the other hand, it just broadens the understanding of toddlers who will eventually come to ask about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding publicly should be nothing that women should have to refrain from doing and be ashamed or bashed about because necessary for them and their babies. This should not even be a problem because breastfeeding is a natural part of
What could possibly be wrong about a mother nourishing her child? Absolutely nothing. Many people view a woman's breasts as sexual items. The main purpose of breasts Is to breastfeed a child after birth. I came across The Milk Truck while back. The Milk Truck is there “to create a mobile breastfeeding unit that allows mothers to feed their babies in places where they have been discouraged - restaurants, shopping malls, public spaces, etc. Babies should be able to eat anywhere, and everywhere". I am absolutely for breastfeeding in public.
Breast feeding in public is a very controversial subject. Many people feel very strongly about their opinion. This is one of those recurring social debates and issues that seems to pop up quite frequently in one form or another. Is it acceptable to breastfeed in public? There are no laws against it in most states, but is it acceptable or seem presentable to do that in front of one who doesn’t want to see? It is hard to say who is right and who is wrong, when each person has a different view on life, religion and morals.
Breastfeeding in public is natural, however, others think it is inappropriate. A survey has found that 6 out of 10 women who have breastfeed take steps to hide it in public and a 3rd of these women feel embarrassed or incomfortable nursing outside of their home. The poll also showed that 1 in 5 believed people did not want the mothers to breastfeed in public and 1 in 10 who chose not to nurse their baby were influenced by the worry of doing so outside the home. The poll was carried out by Public Health England's parenting advice service. It is illegal to ask a breastfeeding woman to leave a public place but there have been high-profile cases of women being told to cover up.
In America, it is common to see the breasts being placed in a sexual light almost everyday, from magazine covers to the large boobs we see on the beach that have undergone surgery to become “perfect” in the eyes of men. So, now when a women is seen breastfeeding their child, it is more difficult to put away those sexual beliefs that boobs are for pleasure and to see them for the nutrition of children. By making breasts sexual and inappropriate in certain circumstances, we are not allowing for a culture that promotes breastfeeding and the healthy development of our children. I can say for myself personally, although I would like to have the healthiest child possible, I would not feel comfortable breastfeeding in public because I know that men would be looking at me with sexual thoughts and others might be judging me based of the idea of it being inappropriate public exposure, and I am sure many other women feel this exact same way when it comes down to breastfeeding in the United States regardless of the new education we are getting on the
Breastfeeding is a form of a mother feeding her child from her breasts. When women decide to breastfeed their children in public they tend to be looked at with disgust. When their only intentions are to give their infants food and nutrients. Sadly many view it to be inappropriate and considered sexual for a woman's breast to be about of their shirt to feed their child. Women should be allowed to breastfeed in public no matter what anyone else says.
In this paper I will evaluate two artworks that share the same theme of “motherhood and breastfeeding.” In the last few years, the sexualization of breastfeeding has become a big issue. This is due to people see breast as sexual objects and think that women are being exhibitionist, and are doing it just to flaunt their breasts in public. Breastfeeding mothers are faced with the public criticism as they struggle to breastfeed their child, although it is the most natural and healthy method of feeding. The first artwork is by Mary Cassatt and is titled Mother Rose Nursing her Child. This painting was created in the 1900s and it depicts a woman breastfeeding her child. The second piece is a contemporary portrait created by Catherine Opie titled Self-Portrait Nursing. The portrait depicts a modern mother also nursing her child. When comparing both of these pieces of art I plan to focus on the beauty of motherhood and the bond between mother and child. In this paper I will discuss the social issue of mother’s being criticized for breastfeeding in public. Now more than ever women’s breasts are being overly sexualized when they are not a sexual organ, but in fact a part of their body used to feed another human being.
