On the surface Germany appears to be a loving, and a precise country with its love of bratwurst sausages and beer. However Germany is known for much more than being an easy going society that loves to eat. Germany is widely known for the mistreatment to the Jews during world war two. When Hitler came into power he believed that all Jews were inferior to the Germans who Hitler deemed racially superior to their Jewish counterparts. Modern texts set during the Holocaust present a more humanised side of the Nazis, exploring friendships that existed between Jews and Nazi followers. Markus Zusak's 2005 novel "The Book Thief" and the 2002 drama "The Pianist" directed by Roman Polanski reveal that Nazi Germans used their power during the Holocaust not always for evil but also for good. Power and friendship is seen in "The Book Thief" as Liesel's family has the power to let Max die from starvation but instead they feed him and grow to love him as he becomes a member of the family. Viewers see the willingness and lengths that Dorota is willing to go through to help protect and shelter Szpilman. The friendship between the two is similar to the friendship of Anne Frank and Peter Van Dann from the 2009 tv movie "The Diary of Anne Frank". Although both Peter and Anne are Jewish they are brought together by the war, as they hide for two years from the Nazis. What the two films have in common is that people risked their lives to shelter and feed their Jewish friends. The punishment for Jews who were in hiding was death, the same punishment applied to anyone who wittingly provided refuge to Jews.
