All humans are entitled to basic human rights, and therefore should not have discrimination, deception and abuse in their lives. Freedom of speech and equality are examples of human rights, but in Lois Lowry’s Gathering Blue, many characters are denied of these basic and simple rights. The main character in this novel, who must endure the most abuse and torment from her community, is named Kira. She was born with an amazing artistic talent but also with a deformed leg, which causes her to be distanced and ostracized by the community. The leaders in her community, also known as the Council of Guardians, discriminate against people who are ‘weak’ and they create the illusion
The Run for Wellness Free 5K run has been an ongoing event since 2011 created by the Houston Wellness Project. The organization was founded in response to the rising necessity for improving community access to wellness programing. The mission of The Houston Wellness Project is to strive to promote healthy lifestyle choices by educating people and communities on a culture of positive wellness education. The Run for Wellness Free 5K is the main event that assist in fulfilling the mission as it usually occurs three times a month in three different locations here in Houston. The 5K run is free event that encourages people of all ages to come out and participate in an event that promotes a healthy lifestyle. There are many sponsors that support the event and help it be free for the people. Some of those sponsors include The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Marathon Foundation, Ramey & Schwaller, Houston Striders, and many more. Without their support and donations, plus the help of the volunteers, there is no way possible this event would be free for people to come out and enjoy. People populate the same place, same space, and same planet. People do not see the world in the same way. John Steinbeck’s quote from Travels With Charley contextualizes his beliefs that there are two types of people, defined by the ways they travel through life. Maps can be formed, used, and stored in many different ways. Steinbeck expresses to his readers that while maps are important to any traveler, people who take pleasure in being guided through life by maps are different from people who live amongst an ever evolving map that constructs itself behind the steps of true explores and adventures.
Blue’s Clues specifically set out to fix these problems. Cognitive development was vital, but they wanted to do it in a way that didn’t sacrifice fun or comprehension. First, they addressed the issue of comprehension. As long as things happened logically, as long as kids could make a connection, it didn’t matter the length of the segments. At the time a dominant theory in developmental theory, Piaget’s work meant that easily distractible children couldn’t handle large jumbles of video or longer segments. Sesame Street supported the first part of this, by showing children couldn’t understand things out of order. But Blue’s Clues challenged the second part, and in doing so changed the idea of the length of child’s attention span (Jaffe). This
The goal is to have participants to be active for 32 out of 40 days. I volunteered to be the liaison between the Wellness Committee and 2014 PHAP associates. I was responsible for recruiting participants in my PHAP class. I worked on a team with three other PHAP associates. I drafted e-mails that reminded participants to log physical activity. We also created an internal PHAP weekly fitness challenge and a survey tracked participation rates by supervisor groups. I organized fitness activities at the Atlanta Summer Training with the other 2014 representative. I had opportunities to interact with members in centers and learned from working with other
The effectiveness of the health care we provide at Salina Family Health Care is measured routinely. For example, there is a “health care plan” that encompasses 16 different aspects of health care that we’ve determined to be important to our patient population. For these 16 “goals” we have 34 specific interventions we’ve implemented to help us achieve these goals. We receive a monthly report of our progress toward meeting these goals which might include getting blood pressure readings below 140/90, catching women up who need a pap smear or encouraging smoking cessation in persons who smoke. This health care plan drives our practice and the feedback we receive for our efforts guide our practice daily.
Moses Is one of the most prominent figures in the Old Testament. Moses was the man chosen to bring redemption to his people. God chose Moses to lead the Israelites from captivity in Egypt to the salvation of a promised land. I will explore the life of Moses from his childhood years all the way to his death and the 10 commandments. At the end I will be answering some questions about Moses. The questions I will be answering are 1.) How this character’s life fit into one of the sessions themes? 2.) Why this individual piques my interest? 3.) What I learned from his life? Let our journey into the life of Moses begin.
The United States does not follow a direct democracy—rather than voting on laws directly, the people vote their representative, including the president, the senate, and the house of representatives, into power and allow them to create and vote on laws. The people of the United States are not limited by this voting, however. Rather, this is only the beginning of their process.
