Human beings all across the globe display certain personality traits that could be viewed negatively or positively, depending on one’s perspective. In this modern world, society has the tendency to label manners in order to distinguish whether they are meeting up with the current expectations as to what is exceptional and unacceptable. However, even in the most severe cases, traces of virtue could be found within evil, when used appropriately. In the autobiography Black Boy by Richard Wright, the main character named Richard demonstrates that he is intelligent and independent. Although some might judge his fearless nature negatively, he confirms a brave personality when faced with conflict. Throughout his childhood, Richard faces many tasks in which he responds back with intelligence. For example, when Richard is introduced to the world of math, he puts in a lot of effort to memorizing the work, in one encounter which he is to memorize digits he says “In about an hour’s time I had learned to count to a hundred and I was overjoyed” (Wright 23). This determines intelligence, because he is capable of absorbing knowledge …show more content…
For example, when faced with religion, he states “[I] need proof before I could believe that I could not commit myself to do something” (Wright 116). His refusal to believe in anything that has followed him since birth is a great indicator that he is independent towards his life decisions. He is in full control over his thinking, and does not depend on another’s authority, showing he is self-governing. Another example which proves he is an independent person would be when he says, “In the past I had taken punishment that was not mine to protect the solidarity of gang” (Wright 108). This shows Richard is self determined to protect his friends, and he is very much able to stand on his own two feet with great strength of
Richard is not eye-catching due to physical deformity which he vividly describes as the cause of his misfit, and therefore acquires himself the status of a victim. No one pays attention to him because others neither find him handsome nor sexually appealing. But he magnetizes the audience, makes them complicit of his own deeds and dares it to look away.
However, she is only doing this in order to help Richard survive in the future. By winning the right to the streets of Memphis, Richard is growing more independent. He no longer relies on his father to bring home food because he is not coming back, and he is able to stand up for himself when the time comes. Richard becomes more independent throughout different experiences in Black Boy.
Richard did not understand until later that the black community discouraged his rebellious ways because following the expectations of whites was a way to ensure survival of the community. A rebellious act of one black not only put his or her life in danger, but also his or her family and the entire black community. Richard’s need to conform to the rules of the white society for survival and his need to rebel in order to achieve his humanity and individuality was a tension that infested him daily.
He comes from an extremely religious family, and as someone who doesn't fully believe in the church, he is very much so isolated. However, the abusive way they try to push their religion on him leads to further isolation. When he was a young child, his grandmother and Aunt Addie tried to force him into trying to join the church in order to save him. At one point, they even forced him to spend an hour a day praying (120). However, Richard did not believe in the church;this would isolate him from the rest of the family. “They begged me so continuously to come to God that it was impossible for me to ignore them without wounding them. Desperately I tried to think of some way to say no without making them hate me” (116). Richard’s family want him to join their church, to the point where he is afraid that they will not love him if he says no. This feeling causes Richard to feel isolated from his family. This feeling is furthered when his mother joins in on the cause. In chapter 6, Richard’s mother tries to force him to join her Black Methodist Church. Richard, still feeling disillusioned with the church, is further isolated from his family due to this incident. “It was no longer a question of my believing in God; it was no longer a matter of whether I would steal or lie or murder; … If I refused, it meant that I did not love my mother, and no man in that tight little black community had ever been
Next, “There is a large debate regarding why Black males are overrepresented in categories associated with negative behavior. The experiment conducted on this negative stereotype explored the influences on environmental lack of economic resources, social and political aspects related to academic performance of black males. The environment and culture can help shape the male’s performance. Resolutions to the many issues listed above are a work in progress. Organizations which include educators, parent and youth service providers are combining their energy to diffuse and redirect the matter. “The Trouble with Black Boys: The Role and Influence of Environmental and Cultural Factors on the Academic Performance of African American Males”, (Noguera ,2015 p.1).In brief, on the
When placed in the right situations and circumstances, all human beings are capable of revealing a darker side of them-a side that almost everyone is afraid to show. No one will admit to having a dark side in them, until nature forces them to face it. Lord of the Flies by William Golding and A Separate Peace by John Knowles are two books that emphasize man’s savagery through their characters, themes, and plots. At first, all men have hidden savagery, then something triggers the savagery within them, and they complete the transformation.
While interviewing Richard a family friend, Robbie Lieberman chimed in with a statement, “[Richard] would be put in a headlock but as soon as you blink he’d have ‘em on the floor all bloodied and broken, it was funny,” he said. Richard would not come out completely unscathed, this is were a lot his concussions came from. Another thing that Richard would do is that he would fall, a lot. Richard was the neighborhood hellion, so when he would hear the sirens of the police he would run and jump out of there. All it takes is one misstep and now you’ve got another
It makes me mad as heck that black girls can't just be pretty. Black girls are just as pretty as the girls and other races. I don't understand how people can think otherwise. Generalizing a whole group of people when you've only best small portion of them is crap. I guess it's just funny that people hate being generalize but they do with other races anyway. I just want to send out a friendly reminder that you're pretty for a black girl is not a compliment. How dumb can you truly be to believe that that statement is not offensive. You've already proven to me that her head is full of nothing but stereotypes of black women. Ugly dumb big booty big boobs slim thick and curvy. Instead of seeing this as a people we actually are you're seeing this
John proves that he is independent when he goes to court by himself to save his wife Elizabeth. When Elizabeth got accused of witchcraft he went into Salem by himself even though he knew that the court wouldn't see highly of him. A way that I show that I am independent is that I learn things on my own. When most people play a sport they have a coach to tell them what to do and to teach them how to do things. When I skateboard I don't have a coach so I learn all my tricks by myself. Doing my own thing is another way that i'm independent. When I work I do all my projects and jobs by myself because I like to work on my

William Gay’s short story, “The Paperhanger” does an excellent job illustrating the theme that, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Today’s society is so focused on outward appearances, that they tend to forget this popular idiom. This expression can be interpreted in many ways, both literally, and abstractly. While a book may appear fun and adventurous on the outside cover, the inside context may lack excitement and adventure. On the other hand, those that look sweet and innocent on the outside may be manipulative and evil at the core. Moreover, those that seem rough around the edges may be the sweetest, most kindhearted individuals on the inside. The main character in “The Paperhanger” is a great example of a man whose outward appearances and actions do not match his inner personality traits. While the paperhanger appears honorable to the outside world, deep down he is devious and spiteful.
Society has not always been fair with the treatment towards African Americans. There has been a constant negative impact placed on African Americans self-esteem, where it is hard to maintain a positive identity because they lived in a white society. African Americans have to struggle to either attain or maintain a sense of self-respect. James Baldwin in Blues for Mister Charlie depicts a character that battles with his self-esteem in such ways, stated previously named Richard Henry. Richard Henry was a strong willed young man, who thought highly of himself, and did not allow others to make him feel less. Roy Bannister presents a schematic in which details the choice path of threatened egotism, in the characters case his threatened egotism would lead to aggression or violence.
The African American boy self –image was his personality. He was the funny one of the group. He made everyone laugh not just his friends and he liked being the center of attention.
