Big Band Experience

As a student who makes it their goal to involve himself in every musical activity, I have had the privilege to play music in large groups like a marching band, big band, and orchestra, in addition to small groups like a jam band and a traditional gypsy jazz band. I’ve participated in competitions at tens of schools, auditioned into region bands, and played big band charts on the steps of the Navy Memorial. With that being considered the group that had the most profound effect on me is a student-run Jazz combo, a small group of around eight high school musicians who played jazz standards at smaller high-class events. My four years in this group contain some of my most significant experiences of my high-school career. These experiences were what changed a nervous and absent minded freshman into the confident student leader that I act as today.
Only looking at the combo as a music performance group would do a disservice to fully understanding what is actually a four-year experience. The band was a place to learn, a place to show off talent, a place to make friends, and a place to tell stories. It succeeds based on the knowledge of the experienced members and it survives because this knowledge and advice is passed on. This unique trait has helped shape some of my core beliefs, particularly the need for individuals to share and pool experiences so lessons don’t need to be learned twice. Some things just can’t be written in a packet and memorized, whether it be how to recover from a mistake or how to manage homework and a social life. It was a strange experience leaning over to the new drummer earlier this year during a gig and explaining the song “Killer Joe.” “Stay relaxed, don’t rush it, and follow my lead. Watch me if you get lost.” This was a strange experience because I was given the same explanation by an upperclassmen four years
