Bette Ellen (Conrad) Cunningham 83 of Simsbury, CT, former wife of the late William Cunningham, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Apple Rehab in Mystic, CT. Born in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of Ralph and Marion (Short) Conrad and sister of Barbara Bousquet of Putney, VT. She grew up in Springfield and graduated from Technical High School. In 1950 she married her high school sweetheart William Cunningham, who was then serving in the United States Air Force in Tucson, AZ. After starting a family in Tucson they returned to the Springfield area where they raised five children. Once her children were grown, Bette launched a career in food service becoming head cook at Mary Lyons Nursing Home of Hampden, MA. At Mary Lyons …show more content…
Bette was eagerly anticipating moving into a retirement home by the shore in Noank in June of 2014 when she became seriously ill and instead required admittance to Apple Rehab in Mystic. Although in hospice, she was deeply appreciative of her last months at the shore that she loved in Mystic, CT, where she reveled in numerous outings for sightseeing along the coast and lobster rolls. Bette is survived by her five children David Cunningham of Noank, CT, Richard Cunningham and his wife Paula of Belchertown, MA, William Cunningham and his wife Lynne of East Longmeadow, MA, Paul Cunningham of East Longmeadow, MA, and Bette Johnston-Kilduff of The Villages, FL, grandchildren Sheree Dubuque, Cheryl Cunningham, Robert Johnston, Brian Johnston, Benjamin Kilduff and Emily Kilduff, great grandchildren Billy and Adianna Dubuque. Grace Bidwell Terry, 96, passed away March 14 at Pocono Medical Center after a short illness. She was born on October 27, 1919 in Ridgewood, NY, the daughter of Catherine (Knissel) and Charles Bidwell. Grace graduated from Grover Cleveland High School and St. Aloysius Secretarial School in Queens, NY. In 1942 she married Robert Terry and followed him to army bases Camp McCoy, WI and Ft. Mead, MD, following which they lived for 40 years in Williston Park, NY. A homemaker, Grace was a member of the Nassau County Extension Service, the Pieceful Patchers of the Park, and a Girl Scout leader. In January of 1945 a group of US pow’s (prisoners of war) were trapped by the Nazi’s in Stalag IXA POW camp near Ziegenhain Germany. Master Sgt. Roddie Edmonds had a gun held to his because he did not turn over his Jewish American soldiers. Instead the whole group of over 1,000 POWs was standing in unity and going against orders. The Nazi threatened to shoot Edmonds, but he calmly responded that giving over the religion of his soldier is against the Geneva Convention. Edmonds continued on to say that if he was shot all of his soldiers must be shot and then the Nazi’s doing so would be put on trial after the war and would face fatal consequences. Mary Ann Dyehouse, 83, of Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Vonda Davis of Sardinia, and the late Arthur McGhehey, of Mt. Orab. She was preceded in death by her son, Pat Hastings of Ripley, Ohio, former husband Tom Hastings and her husband, Herman Dyehouse of Hillsboro.
Edith “Bette” Aprile was a former talent and played in bands and sang in New England. She was born March 22nd, 1932 in Hampton, NH to the late Bessie and Chester Gauron. As a teenager, her and her sister performed took all kinds of dancing lessons and performed hawaiian acrobats. When Bette was only a teenager, her and her sister took dancing lessons and went on to dance at shows, presenting Hawaiian acrobats. As a young woman, She was a professional singer in the Boston area and performed in many areas. After shows and when bored, Bette would go out and smoke a cigarette. Annie Easley was born on April 23,1933, In Birmingham Alabama. Easley and her brother were raised by thaier single mother Mary Melvin Hoover. Her mother was one of her greatest inspirations and her role model, she always encouraged her to get a good education. In an oral history interview with NASA, she said that her mother always used to tell her "You can be anything you want to. It doesn't matter what you look like, what your size is, what your color is. You can be anything you want to, but you do have to work at it." Annie Easley attended school in Birmingham and graduated as the valedictorian of her grade. On 10/6, Bettie participate in her annual meeting at A Grace Place. When asked if she wanted to continue to live at the Gayton Home, she stated "uh-huh." Bettie was asked if she likes the residential services and wanted to continue to receive them from the Gayton program, and she stated "yep." Bettie stated she likes going out and going to yard sales, when asked what she like about her services.
Beth Brown is an African American woman who studied astrophysics. Astrophysics is an area of science which applies physical laws discovered on Earth to phenomena throughout the cosmos. Cosmos is the world or universe regarded as an orderly, harmonious system (Dictionary.com). Beth is a very appreciated and inspiring astronomer. An astronomer is an expert in or student of astronomy. She was an inspiration to women and minorities in encouraging them to pursue their careers in astronomy/physics. Beth Brown died at the age of 39 due to a pulmonary embolism. When she died, the astronomical community lost one of its most buoyant and caring individuals (Bregman 1).

In deciding to write about my friend Jane Addams, I knew that it would not be an easy task. Jane is an amazing person who is driven to help all manner of people even though her own life was filled with struggles. Jane brought hope, caring, and love to many people in two centuries, the 19th and the 20th. She lived her life for others by taking her struggles and turning them into ways to alleviate the same for others less fortunate. Jane's learning took her across an ocean and led her to people who would help her on her journey. One of these people was Ellen Gates Starr. Together Jane and Ellen worked for many years as a team to help others.

Her father fell sick soon after his close friend deceased of lung cancer. “Otto used to compare the symptoms of his disease from that of his friend, and as a result was convinced that he too had lung cancer”. “This was why he did attain any treatment until the level of diabetes had increased greatly”.
