William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth, is a story about betrayal, murder, and corruption. Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1606 and utilizes many concepts to help further develop the play. Macbeth was seen to be the shortest and bloodiest play written by Shakespeare. This tragedy is not seen as one of Shakespeare’s most complex but it is definitely powerful and emotionally intense. This dark and cynical play reflects on the insecurities of the Jacobean period. Right from the beginning it tumbles into a dark twist and doesn’t stop until the conclusion and Shakespeare relates this twist to the cautionary tale about James I of Britain. Shakespeare established his allegiance to the new king, James, the Scottish nephew of Queen Elizabeth, by writing Macbeth which shows the disastrous effects of overthrowing the throne. Macbeth approaches his ambition to become king in a negative manner. The play begins with a trio of witches, who plot mischief against Macbeth by using different prophecies. The prophecies from these witches play a key role in this tragedy; had the witches not prophesized Macbeth’s future, he may not have committed the crimes. Macbeth, a Scottish general who is led by the wicked thoughts by the prophecies, and Banquo, a noble general, encounter the witches and these three “midnight hags” tell Macbeth that he will be made thane of Cawdor. They also prophesied that Banquo’s children will become Scottish kings, but he himself will never be king. You would think that most people would not believe the prophecies that were made and that is true. Macbeth and Banquo thought about the prophecies and treated them skeptically. They did not know whether to believe these prophecies or not, until Macbeth is told by King Duncan, the good king of Scotland, that he has been named thane of Cawdor. Now that one prophecy was true, Macbeth was not sure what to expect
