Bethany Hall-Long story gives the reader a perfect example of what a day-to-day activities consists of when running a campaign. Campaign activates entails phone banks, literature drops, door-to-door canvassing, and house parties (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2012). After reading Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee (2012), this student understood that running a political campaign requires hard work and dedication. As Bethany states she juggle caring for her family, legislative work, and nursing education (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2012, p. 581). She spent three days in meeting which runs at least 8 to 12 hours long. As she states, the rest of her days were focused on doing community work, speeches, and working as a nurse educator (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee,
She was an active participant in her husband’s campaigns. “I made appointments for speaking, recruited speakers, answered newspaper attacks, contracted for the printing and distribution of circulars and sample ballots,” she recalled, “and more than all, kept a brave face to the foe and a smiling face to the almost exhausted candidate.” Her presence on the campaign trail—an unusual place to find a woman then—drew fire from William’s opponents. She would later recall, “I did not stop to think what a change this was for a young woman considered only an ornament and household mistress.” As William’s congressional secretary in “Washington City,” she managed her husband’s correspondence and speeches while writing columns for two local newspapers
The article, “The Girl Who Lived Forever”, by Kristen Lewis, describes the hardships of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl, and her family, who like millions of other Jews, perished at the hands of the Nazis during WWII. Anne Frank lived during one of the most terrifying and horrific historical events the world has ever seen, the Holocaust. She and her family managed to survive for 2 long years in hiding, by living in a secret annex behind her father’s pectin factory. In August of 1944, the SS captured Anne and the others hiding in the annex. All but Otto Frank, Anne’s father, perished in the Nazi concentration camps. Though they lived through unspeakable and unimaginable challenges, Anne, her family and their friends showed a tremendous amount of courage trying to defy Hitler and his evil regime.
From the rousing introduction, Chris Mathews' Hardball presents itself as a godsend to young aspiring politicians, businessmen, and frankly, everyone alike. Pompously self-assured, Mathews discusses his reasoning to sharing his wisdom collected from his own experience and other major players in "Hardball". However after finishing the book, his audacity could be forgiven by the enjoyable nature of his work, the information it provides, and the uncanny resemblance to Benjamin Franklin's writing style. In the first section of Mathews' self-proclaimed "classic" and political manifesto, he presents the world of politics through a series of informative--if not redundant--phrases, historical examples, and his own experience in Washington.
Maggie has a hard time getting money for her campaign. She starts by calling citizens, but
Show the community that we are involved in it in a very meaningful way. This was the strategy that Adam chose because it shows that he truly cares about the community and not just doing these nice activities to appear appealing to the community. The important thing about this is that it obviously needs to have a positive outcome. The first thing that we desired this approach to do was to gain the support of the community leaders. These community leaders include natural leaders within the community, Union Leaders, and politically active citizens. One example of these community leaders was Lisa Boggs. She is a Civic Association Leader and is on the Ward Committee. This was important because it helped us gain the support of republicans who have not voted democrat in a very long time. While being meaningfully involved in the community and gaining the trust of the community leaders Adam did not ask for an endorsement until the very end. He did this on purpose because he believed that you have to show you are willing to help them before they will be ready to help you. In addition to showing his meaningful involvement in the community when we went canvassing Adam insisted that we leave a personal note on the literature that we left to show that we truly cared about talking with them. In addition to showing how much we truly cared about the community and gaining the trust of the community leaders, we also relied on Mike Stinziano and Dan Stewart to help gain the trust of the voters in our district. Democrats in the district know both of these men and trust them both. They helped our campaign immensely and this is obvious through Dan Stewart helped Adam get the support of the Somalian Voters. We won ninety percent of the Somalian vote. When it came time to start canvassing Adam decided he wanted us to start in The Westgate Neighborhood, specifically Ward 32 and work our way outwards. He believed this because this
Lydia’s Open Door by American Anthropologist Patty Kelly is an intriguing case study about both the hidden and not so hidden aspects of sex work in Chiapas, Mexico. Her book proves the usefulness of ethnographic works where she engages with unconventional ways of knowing in order to determine the complex relationships that help to reproduce gender inequality. Lydia’s Open Door contextualizes prostitution within a political and economic framework revealing how it is impossible to diagnose one without the others. She uses both macro and micro-analysis to deconstruct the variability in how prostitution is practiced, regulated and perceived through space and time. Throughout her ethnography she discusses how globalization and
[History is hidden through giving limited access to only certain historical files, and it is hidden because of shame and embarrassment.] Throughout the book “Wake” by Rebecca Hall she illustrates how she struggled to find information on women led revolts in the North. She chose to focus on the North, because she grew up in New York City and wanted to try to eradicate the idea that slavery was only a problem in the South. She tries to enter numerous archives to find information on topics like the slave trade, and revolts intending to find more information on the women who led them but almost every time is stopped at the door. She gives a reason for needing these primary sources, but they still find a way to prevent her from entering even though
In chapter three of Mudhouse Sabbath, Lauren Winner talks about mourning. When I looked up the definition of morning in the dictionary, it basically said that mourning is the act of grieving and showing sorrow, often by wearing the color black. The ways Christians and Jews morn are different. For Christians, those first few weeks after the death of someone, the members of the church and other friends or family are there for there for the people who are morning. For example, if the mother of Sally died, the friends and family of Sally would visit her the first few weeks after the funeral. Her friends and family might spend more time with Sally while she is morning and bring food and ask how Sally is doing. Then after a few weeks, the friends and family of Sally would visit less. They do not

Overall, our Game Change chapters were insightful and gave us a new perspective on John Edwards, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. It was interesting reading about Hillary’s tactics in the previous election and comparing them to how she is executing her current campaign. However, the most interesting aspect of our chapters was John Edwards and his arrogance. It was disappointing how his ambitions were overshadowed by his personal
Compare And Contrast Literary Essay Bethany Hamilton's life story and Making Sarah Cry both show the same theme of overcoming obstacles. Bethany Hamilton has overcome the fact that shark bites off her left arm. In Making Sarah Cry, Sarah overcame the fact that she was being bullied, and decided to still stick up for the narrator who bullied her. Although the texts are similar the characters are very different. On one hand, Sarah has been bullied, and hasn’t done much to stop it.
I have known Natalie Schieuer for almost half a year now, and in that time I have been incredibly pleased to meet such an amazing, talented, and brilliant young lady. I was Natalie’s counselor this summer at Nebraska Girls State. Girls State is a week-long camp, aimed towards education of state and local government. 400 of Nebraska’s top emerging high school juniors are chosen to attend this program, and within these numbers, Natalie still managed to shine through with her accomplishments and wit.
This was no longer about winning a mock election, this was about representing my people and proving that we are not statistics and we are not undeserving of proper food. I recalled my poverty after Hurricane Katrina, the meals I gave up for my brother, and the mindset of penny-pinching that still follows me today, though this survival technique is no longer necessary. I stood in front of three hundred girls, some of which had no similar experiences to mine, others who connected with everything, but by the end of the speech, the atmosphere had
