Bernard “Bernie” Sanders, a Defender of the People
“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.” said Franklin D. Roosevelt in his second inaugural address. Today, social inequality is highly apparent and many of the United States’ political candidates are unable to do anything to resolve it. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders, a democratic socialist, is the best candidate to resolve social inequality along with other problems the nation has today. Bernie Sanders has proven himself to be a defender of the people with his stance for social inequality and his plans on reforming the nation. Undoubtedly Bernie Sanders’ stance on social inequality

Sanders believes that there are many issues in the United States today that need to be fixed. For example, Sanders believes that “we need major reforms in our broken criminal justice system” ("Sanders: Our Criminal Justice System...” 2015). Sanders proposes “[..] to start treating prisoners as human beings” as well as “[..] eliminate federal, state, and local contracts for privately run prisons within 2 years” ("Sanders: Our Criminal Justice System..” 2015). This reform will do much prevent the swindling of prisoners by the private companies as well as promote better overseeing on the prisoners ("Sanders: Our Criminal Justice System..” 2015). Additionally, Sanders proposes reforms on the immigration policy (Editorial Board). Sanders wants for immigrants to have more access to courts and lawyers to decrease racial profiling, which is distinctly apparent today (Editorial Board). Some may argue that these reforms to immigration may seem radical, especially with the problems going on right now, still, immigrants are the backbone of America and have done much to boost this nation’s economy (Engler). In addition, Sanders proposes gun reforms, which includes a ban on assault weapons and tougher background checks (Mercia, LoBianco), and tax reforms, which includes a moderate tax increase on the wealthy and corporations (Cohen). Hence, Bernie Sanders’ …show more content…
In brief, Bernie Sanders’ opinion on social equality and his proposals to reform the United States prove that he is a defender of the people. As Franklin Roosevelt said in his second inaugural address, the government has the responsibility of ensuring that those who have little are supported for and Sanders is one of the only presidential candidates who knows how important every citizen is to the success of the
Senator Bernie Sanders is primarily a democrat but has socialist ideologies. Sanders holds a strong stance on “Shrinking the American middle class” (Sanders, 2017) and increasing income for middle class families by taxing the rich and spreading the wealth. Sanders deals in national politics that affect laws, amendments, and rights. He sponsors and cosponsors bills that he believes will help Americans.
A vote for Bernie Sanders is a vote for free education, reasonably paying jobs, and universal healthcare. [I need to add another sentence right here]. There are many reasons why Bernie Sanders is the best candidate for president based on his policies on college, jobs, and healthcare.
Bernie Sanders is socialist but is written down as a independent which is a big turnoff for most people. When people think of socialist they think of Lenin, Castro, and Stalin who were not the most pleasant of people. Sanders totally different then all of them though. First off he’s Jewish and these people don't seem Jewish. Second off he has not killed anybody like the people listed. And third is he has modern and past democratic views. He is a supporter of gay marriage and abortion which is modern democratic views. He wants the minimum wage raised which has been an ongoing fight for many years with republicans and democrats fighting over it. One more thing he's done is trying to reach out to our younger generation who is voting for the first time. In a New York Times article entitled “The Socialist Senator”, he visited South Burlington High School where he answer some question to some 6o kids. This is what you want in a president, who speaks at schools and answer question for them. In another New York Times Article, he states, “Doctors have told me about patients who died because they put off their medical visits until it was too late”(Sanders, 3). This proves a point that he does not want people to die. Now we can disagree that Sanders should or should not be president but what we can most definitely agree on is we don't want people to
My candidate, Bernie Sanders wants to give immigrants a voice and help them stay in the U.S. Sanders states,” We have eleven million people in this country who are undocumented-who came here to improve their lives, to escape oppression, to flee desperate poverty and violence-and are systematically shut out from that same opportunity.” Bernie Sanders is a son of an immigrant because his father came to this country with not even a penny in his pocket. So he understands why it is important to help those who are illegal here because it’s not fair that they want the same thing as we do, a better life, but can’t have just because they weren’t born here. Nevertheless, Bernie wants what everybody wants, a happy immigrant country.
Time magazine shows how much popularity and support Sanders has received (“The Gospel” 34). A politician who is not afraid to stand up for what he or she trusts will make this nation grow for the future. Bernie Sanders shows this nation that if freedom and equality is given regardless of what color skin you are, where you come from, or how much money and power you have, will make a better
On May 26th, 2015, Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy for the presidency. Bernie stands for the underdog, the beaten down, and the abused. Bernie Sanders has been the Junior Senator from Vermont since 2007. He is an Independent that caucuses with the Democrats. In his run for presidency, Bernie asked questions that others would not. He spoke on issues other candidates would not tackle. He has not just expanded upon the Democratic agenda, he wrote an entirely new agenda. He wrote an agenda for the people. Bernie Sanders mainly resonated with a young demographic of voters which is probably due to the fact that most people my age do not want to live in an austere society. My generation will have to deal with the shortsightedness of the earlier
In making this case, Sanders often harkens back to FDR: “[Roosevelt] saw one-third of the nation ill-housed, ill-clad and ill-nourished and he acted, against the ferocious opposition of the ruling class of his day. … Roosevelt implemented a series of programs that put millions of Americans back to work, took them out of dire poverty and restored their faith in government. Almost every program he produced, every idea he introduced, was called socialist.”
Equality, where are you on that grand scale between 10 and 90% and who will be your voice to equate? Bernie Sanders was born September 8th, 1974 in Brooklyn New York City, NY. Sanders, indisputably has the most unusual history of anyone in the U.S. Congress. He is the longest serving independent in U.S. congressional history and the only candidate who is not working with Super P.A.C 's having decided on primarily soliciting small private contributions. He became U.S senator of Vermont in 2006 and was reelected by capturing almost 71% of the popular vote. Bernie Sanders is a viable candidate with an ethical appeal who speaks to the populist, a candidate with a logical appeal who is most known as a progressive voice on political issues such as universal health care, civil rights, and income inequality. Above all, Sanders is a man with an emotional appeal who speaks of the Democratic values that everyday American 's care about regardless of their political affiliation. Throughout his career he has focused on the diminution of the American middle class and the expanding income and wealth gaps in the United States.
Bernie Sanders is a son of an immigrant and has realized that the vast majority of Americans at one point stemmed from immigration. It is the fundamental belief that the U.S. has a better opportunity for all people. His proactive plan includes a path to citizenship for eleven million undocumented Americans, a future policy to uphold our country’s beliefs, and to balance trade agreements Thousands of people immigrated through Angel Island, “ 22 million immigrants entered the country through Ellis Island and the Port of New York,” (“How Many Immigrants”) and eleven million undocumented people from the U.S.’s southern border have entered the country illegally. Sanders stands for equality for all Americans, not only the ones with papers. This candidate stands for an America that takes pride in caring for thy neighbor and being a haven for the oppressed. Bernie Sanders stands with us, not against us.
The 2016 Presidential Election is coming sooner and sooner as each day passes, and it’s approaching the point where all eligible voters need to become informed about the each of the Democrat and Republican candidates running in the 2016 Presidential bid. The voter should be aware of what each candidate represents and what their values are and from that the voter can decide which candidate suits their beliefs best and vote for said candidate when the time comes. In this upcoming election, in my opinion, the candidate that wants the best for the majority of the citizens of the United States is Senator Bernie Sanders. His views in politics, connect with many poor and middle class families because all throughout his political career and his 2016
Bernie Sanders is a part of the Democratic Party, he has held an elected office position for the past 34 year.He believes in American liberalism, Modern liberalism, and Progressivism. Sanders has been a senator for Senate of the United States since 2006. Sanders is the longest serving independent politicians in congress as of the moment,he is serving his second term in office. Bernie started his political career in the 80’s in the state of Vermont. He once told the Guardian newspaper that “ I saw unfairness. That was my major inspiration in my politics”
Good afternoon everybody, today I will be talking about why Presidential Canidate Bernie Sanders should be president. Born September 8, 1841, Senator Bernie Sanders has been in the US Senate for 10 years after 16 years as Vermont’s sole congressman in the House of Representatives. He is currently in his second term in the US Senate after being re-elected in 2012 with 71% of the vote. Sanders’ believes in raising the american minimum wage to USD $15- a “living wage”, isn’t supported by PACs, and geniunly cares about the lives of americans.
Before becoming a United States Senator and Representative, Bernie Sanders was mayor of Burlington from 1981 to 1989. It was here that he began to realize the unhealthy wage gap between the lower and upper class, and the shrinking middle class that resulted. Sanders claimed himself a Democratic Socialist, because although he is fighting for democracy and power to the people, he is also focusing on bridging the wage gap with taxation, especially of the government and the upper class (About). Bernie Sanders embodies the new wave of liberalism that has come to Vermont, with aspirations of economic and social equality for the working class.
Another proposal Bernie Sanders wishes to incorporate is the production of jobs. The United States is in the midst of an ongoing unemployment crisis which needs to be resolved as soon as possible. There are many who look for a full-time job but cannot find any due to the lack of. This includes teenagers, mainly minorities, who search for a job to help sustain their families or pay for their education, but are left with no employment. A solution would be to invest $1 trillion over 5 years to modernize the country by creating and maintaining good-paying jobs while making our country more productive, efficient and safe. The Employ Young Americans Now Act would also be introduced which would provide $5.5 billion in immediate funding to employ
Sanders reviews economic issues every day, he pleads and speaks on the truth and effects of how America is the dumbing ground of corporate greed and political corruption. From the time of 2010-2016, Sanders finds out that corporate GREED is destroying the economy. He speaks on how almost all of the new wealth and income is going to the top 1%. He not only believes that but thinks the mainstream media is more interested in discussing 'everything ' accept the most important issues facing the American people. Which is why he thinks citizens should be taking the responsibility to go
