Bernardo de Galvez was born on July 23, 1746, in Macharaviaya, Spain. He was part of a very distinguished family in the royal service of Spain, and following family tradition, went into the military. At the age of sixteen, Galvez became a captain, and in the following years, he fought Portugal and then went to New Spain, where he eventually became the leader of some military forces. He later returned to Spain and continued to do various military work until 1776, when he was transferred to the province of Louisiana, and after one year, became governor. Initially, he trained for the clergy, but when his older brother died, Rochambeau who was just fifteen years old at the time, decided to change careers and joined a cavalry regiment. Later, he fought in the the War of the Austrian Succession, in which he became a colonel. In 1761, Rochambeau became Brigadier General and inspector of cavalry, and in 1776, he became governor of Villefranche-en-Roussillon. In 1780, he was made the commander of a French army of 6,000 troops, which soon went to North America to help the colonists fight the British. Rochambeau and his men arrived in Newport, Rhode Island in July of that same year, but waited an entire year for naval support which never arrived. In July of 1781, Rochambeau joined forces with George Washington in White Plains, New York and together they moved to Yorktown, Virginia. There, they fought Cornwallis and forced him to surrender. This great victory was largely a result of Rochambeau’s strategic prowess, which greatly impressed Washington. In January of 1783, Rochambeau returned to France and was appointed Governor of Picardy and Artois. Rochambeau later fought in the French Revolution, and was imprisoned during the reign of terror. When lafayette eventually landed in charleston and when the leaders learned of his mission they were astonished. Ruben Salazar was born on March 3, 1928, in Ciudad Juarez, and moved to El Paso, Texas where he grew up. Ruben Salazar was a well-known journalist and activist who brought together Chicanos and Americans. He was one of the first non-white journalists in an all-white male profession and proved that he was just as capable of journalism as all of them. Salazar brought together Americans and Chicanos in many ways, he reported on Chicano events and put himself in between a very tense boundary. Salazar began as a journalist for The Los Angeles Times and became a foreign correspondent until a new more powerful Chicano movement brought him back. In today’s world, we have many famous explorers that we study in text books. One person that is lesser known is Hernan Cortez. Hernan Cortez was born into a lesser noble family in the year of 1485. He was born by the name of Hernan Cortez Pizarror (aztec-history,com). Hernan was destined by his parents to become a lawyer. Setting his own path, Hernan Cortez became a conquistador instead at the age of nineteen. Denying his orders to not set sail, Hernan took eleven ships and more than five hundred men to the Mexican Coast (biography.com). Later becoming a ruler and a criminal, he died December 2, 1547.
Carlo Gesualdo was born on March 8, 1566 in Naples, Italy to the Second Prince of Venosa -what is now called Province of Potenza, Southern Italy. Carlo had an older brother named Luigi who was born three years earlier but unexpectedly died in 1584. Did you know that Jose Clemente Orozco was one of Los Tres Grandes along with David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera? He was a major muralist along with those artists who had a part in the Mexican Revolution, he is significant because through his artwork he was able to display the role that Mexican politics had during the industrial revolution showing the sacrifices people at that time had to make, he showcased how the men went to fight leaving their families behind not knowing who or what they were fighting for. Clemente didn’t start his life under the best circumstances his life is known to be a tragedy in the beginning but his outcome was amazing. He was inspired by Mexico's first great artist Jose Guadalupe Posada who aswell made political artwork, the strong images of his vivid art had Orozco captivated which helped inspire him in the beginning of his art career. People describe El Agave as a tasty, traditional, cramped little Mexican restaurant, but with the best food. Their heritage shows everywhere in the restaurant. Hispanic music plays constantly, and there are items such as sun and moon decorations or like curtains that represent the colors of Mexico’s flag. Also, a lot of Spanish is spoken throughout the day and is seen on the menu. If there is something that people cannot pronounce on the menu, the waitresses and/or waiters help them, so that they can order correctly.
