Beowulf In epic literature, the tragic hero is the protagonist of the poem who proves to be prevalent in a dangerous quest or adventure (literarydevices.net). The definition of a tragic hero was defined by Greek philosopher, Aristotle. The tragic hero evokes sympathy from the reader throughout his epic journey, yet experiences a downfall due to his own vices or flaws. The tragic hero displays strength and bravery, which lead to many victories but also suffers at the hands of his own price and ultimate defeat. In the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf is the tragic hero whose valiance leads to his demise. "Wise sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. For every one of us, living in this world means waiting for our end. Let whoever can win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark… Endure your troubles today. Bear up and be the man I expect you to be." (B.1386-1395) Beowulf's epic deeds demonstrate his honor in warrior culture, and how important he values high moral principles "I had a fixed purpose when I was put to sea… I meant to perform to the uttermost what your people wanted or perish in the attempt... And I shall fulfill that purpose, prove myself with a proud deed or meet my death here in the mead-hall." (B. 632-638) Beowulf has a strong mentality on the purpose of his living and would rather die being a warrior he does not fear death- A character who shares the same mentality as Beowulf is Achilles from the Iliad- the character Achilles does not fear death, and accepts revenge as the best way to mourn a death of a loved one.
