Beowulf is first epic ever written about the heroism of a man who lived thousands of years ago. He was the bravest, strongest, and trustiest man to have ever walked among the Geats in what is now Sweden. He was the nephew of king Hygelac. When Beowulf heard tales of the affliction Grendel was creating, he decides to travel to the land of the Danes and help Hrothgar defeat the demon. He cruises across the sea with fourteen warriors until he reaches Hrothgar’s kingdom and within hours of arrival he murders the hideous, infamous monster. Therefore Beowulf is a true example of a hero because of his bravery, superhuman strength, and his unfailing loyalty to do what is right. Soon after Beowulf’s strength is proven in the poem. when Grendel attacks Herot the night of Beowulf’s arrival “the monster’s whole body was in the pain, a tremendous wound appeared on his shoulder…Beowulf was granted the glory of winning…” in this quote the author describes how the loathsome creature is bleeding out till death because Beowulf ripped his arm off with his bare hands.
