Beowulf As A Christ Figure Essay

The Anglo Saxon epic Beowulf is one of the oldest surviving English epics that we have today. It depicts a hero that helps rid a land of evil. In the epic, I believe that the main character Beowulf is depicted as a Christ figure. If the reader fails to recognize Beowulf as a Christ figure and instead views him as just another wannabe hero that comes to save the day, they will fail to see the Christian symbolism throughout the epic.
In the beginning, we are given the backstory behind the epic. We are told that there is this evil demon named Grendel that is terrorizing King Hrothgar’s kingdom, the kingdom of the Danes. The reasoning behind Grendel’s destructive behavior is that he simply just hears the story of creation. This angers him because he is a descendent of Cain. Cain, as we know from the bible, was exiled by God as a result of killing his own brother Abel. After hearing the people sing the songs of god’s creation of the earth, Grendel decides to take his anger out on the kingdom and slays thirty men that night after they fell asleep. Throughout the entire epic, Beowulf gives credit for his strength to God. With everything that Beowulf did, he said it was because God gave him the strength to do it. This could be compared to Christ performing miracles such as walking on water or turning water into wine. They were both able to do the unthinkable because they had the power of God behind them. If we look in the bible and find conflict between God and Satan, God is always triumphant because good always triumphs over evil. It’s because of god, that Beowulf defeats Grendel and takes off his arm. It’s because of god that Jesus can make a blind person
