When you hear the words “Epic Heroes”, you probably imagine the cliche muscular men with super powers that take on tasks to save the city, such as Superman or The Hulk. Although both show great strength, it does not compare to the heroes I know, Beowulf and Odysseus. Beowulf and Odysseus both possess great powers such as strength, confidence, and the courage to overcome the many challenges they face. Although their strength, ethical views, and quests are very different, they both use their skills and perseverance to become the well known heroes they are today.
To be a hero, the most traditional characteristic to have would be strength. Beowulf and Odysseus both have physical strength that has been portrayed throughout both of their stories. Beowulf has a bit of leverage because his strength consists of a remarkable brawn. Beowulf’s strength was shown during the battle with Grendel when Grendel’s arm was ripped completely off to be hung as a trophy of the fight. Both Beowulf’s and Odysseus’s quest defined who they are and what they are known for. Without Beowulf’s passion for glory, he would have never shown the strength to fight off Grendel. Without Odysseus’s devotion to family and home, he would have given up effortlessly and accepted his failure. Both of these heroes, however, fought tirelessly to overcome challenges to receive what they had been working for.
There are many characteristics such as strength, glory, and quests to be a hero. But to be a great hero, you must show perseverance in some of the most impossible tasks. Both Odysseus and Beowulf did just that in their many fights to prove their worth and to achieve their goal.
