When you hear the words “Epic Heroes”, you probably imagine the cliche muscular men with super powers that take on tasks to save the city, such as Superman or The Hulk. Although both show great strength, it does not compare to the heroes I know, Beowulf and Odysseus. Beowulf and Odysseus both possess great powers such as strength, confidence, and the courage to overcome the many challenges they face. Although their strength, ethical views, and quests are very different, they both use their skills and perseverance to become the well known heroes they are today.
To be a hero, the most traditional characteristic to have would be strength. Beowulf and Odysseus both have physical strength that has been portrayed throughout both of their stories. Beowulf has a bit of leverage because his strength consists of a remarkable brawn. Beowulf’s strength was shown during the battle with Grendel when Grendel’s arm was ripped completely off to be hung as a trophy of the fight. Odysseus on the other hand, had human strength and mental strength to help him in the many

Both Beowulf’s and Odysseus’s quest defined who they are and what they are known for. Without Beowulf’s passion for glory, he would have never shown the strength to fight off Grendel. Without Odysseus’s devotion to family and home, he would have given up effortlessly and accepted his failure. Both of these heroes, however, fought tirelessly to overcome challenges to receive what they had been working for.
There are many characteristics such as strength, glory, and quests to be a hero. But to be a great hero, you must show perseverance in some of the most impossible tasks. Both Odysseus and Beowulf did just that in their many fights to prove their worth and to achieve their goal. Both of these epic heroes deserve the recognition they received for their astronomical strength and individual power to overcome the difficult tasks they
Superman, Spiderman, and Batman are heroes! They possess the two traits that are needed in western civilization to be considered a hero: wisdom and fortitude. These modern heroes have wisdom and fortitude. Did Beowulf possess these traits? Beowulf shows he is a hero through both his wisdom and fortitude throughout his adventures. Beowulf is a great hero because he possesses both wisdom and fortitude.
Reading through Beowulf I began to compare it to the last great epic I read, Homer’s Odyssey. While the Odyssey and Beowulf are each examples of both historic and modern ideas of heroism, the acts of Beowulf’s hero seem to fit better within its context.
The movie The legend of Hercules was captivating. It depicts the archetype of a Greek hero. Betrayal, treachery, slavery and the odds of his life did not stop him to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom. He was bold and brave. We can find a very similar hero in the Anglo-Saxon literature of Beowulf. In the Anglo-Saxon culture a hero was a warrior. He/she was strong, clever, God-fearing and venturesome. Beowulf, a famous Anglo-Saxon poem, was about the adventure of a hero who had inhuman strength that fought a monster named Grendel, Grendel’s mother ,and a fire-breathing dragon that’s hung-over from sleep. Beowulf exemplifies the archetype of a perfect hero through his warrior like, admirable, and loyal characters.

The men return all of this compassion and loyalty with matched or greater loyalty and affection for Odysseus. For when they are rescued they are tearful with joy and gratitude for his returning to save them. Their loyalty is unbroken by Eurylochus’ attempts to undermine Odysseus and cause his men to question him. When Odysseus considers striking down Eurylochus they hold him back with assurances that they are loyal to him and will follow him wherever he may take them “If you-one sprung from Zeus-prefer it so he can stay here and watch the ship. We’ll go with you, lead us to Circe’s sacred house”. It’s defining moments like these that separate Odysseus’ men from Beowulf’s; where Beowulf’s men clearly

Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
Beowulf and Odysseus, two very different written epic heroes. Although, besides the fact that they were written into history at two different time periods, Beowulf and Odysseus aren’t all that different. They share a lot of the same values, beliefs, and hopes. Even if Beowulf didn’t have an affair...or two. The epic poems, Beowulf and The Odyssey, are both similar, but at the same time, they are completely different tales of two very differently similar flawed men.
Every epic hero possesses certain heroic characteristics. Beowulf, like other epic heroes, possesses the following heroic qualities: epic heroes are superhuman types of beings. They have a noble birth and show great bravery. They display great intelligence and resourcefulness. They have a reverence for G-d and for the values of their society. They are dominant male figures and suffer severe pain, but in the end, they conquer evil (Vivone 9/27/99). In addition to Beowulf’s heroic qualities, he is very strong. Beowulf was said to have “the strength of thirty [men] in his mighty handgrip” (Bloom 11). Early proof of Beowulf’s extraordinary strength is evidenced by his dismemberment of Grendel’s limb, the fight in the cave under water, and the

Beowulf demonstrates three of the most important aspects of being a true and epic hero: strength, bravery, and honor. He demonstrated both strength and bravery as well as honor when fighting Grendel. By ripping the arm of the monstrous beast, Beowulf showcased his superhuman strength. Only a brave and heroic man would go into a fight with both the demon, his mother, and then a dragon knowing success awaits. Glory follows success but Beowulf didn’t let that get to his head, his honor kept him fighting for a higher cause. Beowulf, the hero of he Anglo-Saxon times, the only man fighting for the people.
Being a hero can be defined many different ways. Several qualities like courage, respect, and strength can define heroism. A hero is noted for his or her actions for being brave, powerful, and acting with honor. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows all of these characteristics by defending the Danish king, Hrothgar, and his people. He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power and strength to protect others. Beowulf embodies the qualities of bravery, being powerful, and demonstrating his honor; therefore, he can be considered a true hero.
Throughout history, epic heroes have defined the ideal characteristics of a society. Beowulf and Aenus are perfect examples of the ideal hero created from the mind of a creator, for the purpose of defining a society. Most epic heroes share certain character traits such as bravery, courage, determination, hubris or intelligence. It has been noted that sometimes epic heroes appear to simply be lucky or helped along by the gods and rely less on their own abilities. However, there are some heroes who are helped by the gods, but also rely heavily on their own abilities. Odysseus is one such hero. Continually, Odysseus escapes danger with his intelligence and ability to talk his way out of heated situations. Odysseus’ intelligence got him out of Polynicies cave, the hundreds of suitors, and his escape from Circes.
Beowulf displays another trait which considers him a hero and that trait is loyalty. In ancient poems loyalty was one of the most important traits a hero could have. Beowulf was the key model of a hero so he
