The movie The legend of Hercules was captivating. It depicts the archetype of a Greek hero. Betrayal, treachery, slavery and the odds of his life did not stop him to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom. He was bold and brave. We can find a very similar hero in the Anglo-Saxon literature of Beowulf. In the Anglo-Saxon culture a hero was a warrior. He/she was strong, clever, God-fearing and venturesome. Beowulf, a famous Anglo-Saxon poem, was about the adventure of a hero who had inhuman strength that fought a monster named Grendel, Grendel’s mother ,and a fire-breathing dragon that’s hung-over from sleep. Beowulf exemplifies the archetype of a perfect hero through his warrior like, admirable, and loyal characters. The Anglo-Saxon people were fighters. The heros of Anglo-Saxon period were best defined as an honorable warrior. Beowulf showcases his warrior like qualities through his strength. It was said that Beowulf had the strength of 30 men in just one of his arms. He goes on a quest to kill Grendel the monster that had been riotously killing King Hrothgar’s most cherished people. Remembering the kind gesture that King Hrothgar had once done for Beowulf’s father, he shows his respect and loyalty to King Hrothgar by returning the act of kindness. King Hargather had once saved Beowulf’s father from a feud he had with another group of people. Not forgetting this Beowulf comes to Hrothgar’s rescue to return the favor. He also, shows loyalty by protecting the people till his death. After Beowulf was appointed King, he is faithful in keeping his people safe. Although, Beowulf knows that he is too old and weak to kill the dragon, he proceeds with the confrontation because he doesn’t want to let down his people.
