Introduction
Historically, American education has really served as both economic and political needs, which verbalized the function of education. Nowadays, sociologists and educators discuss the various roles of education. Many would probably make the assumption that without argument that adequate professional instruction in the education arena is not wholly theoretical, but does involve a particular amount of practical work. The main query as to the latter is the goal with which it shall be lead. With that said, this essay will examine the impact the Sociological theories, Functionalism, Conflict, and Interactionism regarding their impact on education.
In sociology, a few theories provide broad perspectives that help to explain many different aspects of social life. These theories are so prominent that many consider them paradigms. Paradigms are philosophical and theoretical frameworks used within a discipline to formulate theories, generalizations, and the experiments performed in support of them. Three of these paradigms have come to dominate sociological thinking because they provide useful explanations: structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism.

Everyone in the world has a theory about why something happens or how it happens, but in sociology there are many different types of theories that often contradict each other. Theory is defined as “a statement of how and why specific facts are related” (Macionis, 2013). Most theories explain why people act in certain ways and explains why a person in a group may act different than someone that is alone. When building sociological theories most sociologist ask their selves two different questions: “What issues should we study?” and “How should we connect the facts?” (Macionis, 2013). Functionalist paradigm focuses on the integration of society, while social conflict focuses on the issue of division among society. Symbolic interaction works on communication and social change as a consequence. The three paradigms are completely different from each other in a social point of view. The macro-sociological paradigms view America as an inequality state. The social conflict paradigm fits today's society.
Sociologists employ three major theoretical perspectives in sociology today. They are the structural-functionalist perspective, the conflict perspective, and the symbolic interactionism. The structural-functionalist perspective is done at a macro level and its focus is on the relationships between the parts of society. The Conflict perspective is done at a macro level and its main focus is on how the wealthy controls the poor and weak.
Being an American means to have opportunities that are available to us that others don’t get in other parts of the world. The United States of America is a country that is based on being a free country for citizens to have more freedom than anywhere else. It is one of the only countries that give rights to people of different diversities and genders. To be an American means to have opportunities, rights, and freedom.
However there are three that are the most accepted and commonly used: Structural Functionalism, Symbolic Interactionism, and Conflict theory. For each sociological paradigm (e.g. functionalism, symbolic interactionism, etc) I will give a short review.
In my essay, I intend to discuss the differences between C. Wright Mills "The Sociological Imagination" and common sense explanations. I will begin my essay by describing both the Sociological Imagination and common sense and will them go on to show how each of these approaches would explain the topic of educational success and failure through use of examples. Charles Wright-Mills (1916-1962) was an American Sociologist. Yet there are three sociological theories that differ greatly between them on the role of education. These are Functionalism, Marxism and Liberalism.
Here in the United States education is modeled after our capitalist society which means education holds the interest of industrialization and its image. For example we separate stints into subjects for specific job or career. There are several perspectives on the sociology of education that are important. The perspective in which we are going to be looking at and testing is Functionalism. We will also be examining arguments and evidence against the functionalist perspective such as Marxism and the New Right perspective.
For this sociology class assignment is to present my understanding of three historical sociological paradigms by using three contemporary sociological theorists of color. In sociology, there are three major theories; critical theory, functionalism and symbolic interactionism. These theories express the structure of society in which each theory looks at a different aspects of sociology. Sociologists apply these theories in the study of society, but it becomes difficult if only one theory is applied. For that one applied theory, would only look at the aspect to which it is confined to. To successfully study sociology all three theories must be applied together.

Functionalism has to do with an organizing set or a set of rules that are organized in an institution. Symbolic interactionism has to do with developing a perspective focus and relying on the process of social interaction. Conflict theory emphasizes a higher power producing social order.
