My preliminary thought (being influenced by American culture) is that it is unjust to force someone to comply with – at least some of – your beliefs. However, I also hope I can rationalize that idea. The word “force” connotatively implies, ‘to impede upon something’; in this case the impediment would be upon a form of freedom, since one is not free to make choices in what they believe. Arguably, the freedom to make choices (especially concerning beliefs) is not a human law, but a natural law of intrinsic origin, and thus, it would be unjust to hinder it. The distinctive characteristic of humans is their ability to reason. According to Aristotle the function, or purpose, of a human being, is in fact, to do well at acting in accordance with reason (Irwin 13). Subsequently, within the realm of reasoning resides making choices with, and regard to, reasoning. So rational choices then also play a role in the fulfillment of human nature. Immanuel Kant depicted, free will, as something that is “ascribed to every rational being” (Brussel 215). If free will is the ability to act at one 's own discretion, then this enhances the idea that the ability to make choices is a right that belongs to every rational being. However, the most vital – and likewise idealistic – component of this notion is that all choices are governed by reason. If all actions were governed by reason and all reason was rationalized then, I believe, arguing with someone would be extremely beneficial. This is
In order to effectively analyze cultural differences and power struggles that were demonstrated on the macro and micro level, one must understand the environmental dimensions that were associated with the target population. The dominant American culture often unconsciously ignored the cultural differences with the inferior group that was shared in their environment. As the dominant culture, it is always important to be culturally competent and familiar with the non-dominant culture morals and beliefs. Comparatively, the individuals psychological and spiritual dimensions that were influenced by the social behavioral perspective on the micro level, were associated with their target population.
Around the world there are multiple different cultures not just American culture so to say that American culture is generalizable to other cultures is wrong because cultures around the world are all different however, culture is also shared and while culture is shared, there is not only one culture that everyone shares. Culture creates the behaviors of individuals understandable to other people in the group. Furthermore, generalization is how well the results can be applied to the population being measured and if the experiment is not generalizable, then the results will not refer to the population being measure. In addition, the generalization of other cultures could either push back psychology or move it forward and that is what Haeffel and Arnett are arguing about.
I find myself curious about the past. From ancient civilizations to the technological advancements that have made us who we are today, the past has been instrumental in the development of the present. Much like in essay “America” I too think of the United States when I hear the word America, even if you do an internet search for “America” the first result would be something pertaining to the United States. As an immigrant from Trinidad West Indies at the age of 13 all I knew of the United States was the name America that was associated with it. Knowing nothing more I was introduced to the American culture in the 7th grade. Never having study the history of the United States I have learned the culture and what it means to be an American from
The shaping of any culture requires adaptation to their environment and its problems, such as economical, social and geographical, and the learning from these in order for their culture to live by and survive. The Christian Church would prove the most important in shaping a new European religious civilization. In as much as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam undergirded civilizations in Asia and Africa, Christianity served as the basic unifying force that held together the new European civilization. (Sivers 2015) This process entails having the ability of shaping ones behavior in order to survive and have this same behavior passed onto the following generations.
I think that the article was very interesting and it opened my eye up to a topic I that I never realized had such presence in our society. Overall I liked the article as I enjoy learning about Human Geography and the essence of human nature. I learned that Hispanics have the greatest ability to integrate into our culture than any other cultural group. This can be for a number of reasons and it really just adds to the notion of the general integration of the worlds people into one unified front. I could add to it maybe by bringing in knowledge about other culture’s assimilation into American culture and how they also changed, and redefined it was a whole. I found it very fascinating how the department was able to go around and ask these various
Perspective is the way that people perceive things in the world around them. Common influences include the way people grow up and how they live their lives. These can be strong factors in – Emotion and memory can influence perspective in a large way. In history, there are times when the discussion of opinions is important.
Growing up we go through many different stages and cultures that effect our lives. Whether it be a student, athlete, musician, brother, sister, cousin, and so on there are many different aspects of life that each and every one of us belong to. Up to this point in my life there have been several cultures and groups that I have been involved with that have impacted me. Being a student full time is probably the culture that I believe the belong to the most. I have spent nearly all my childhood and teen years in a school system which is a great thing, but I believe should be fixed and molded. The school system in America needs to start getting back to the basics such as teaching us the history of the United States with events such as World Wars
All in all, American society is established on the Western culture, yet America is a multicultural country because of the diversity of culture that brought by immigrants. Even though Western culture is dominating in America, Mexican and African American culture are a part of the social norm because their population are higher than Asian or the other minorities.
I was born in India but raised In America. I am proud to be indian and America. I see pride in both my countries. It was easy for to adapt to American culture. I have learned a lot and made friends from different background. On Thursday Mr. Beta made me realize I am different. It doesn’t matter if i was raised in America or i have friends here and I am more comfortable her than the country I was born in. The Myth five “I don’t see race and ethnicity, I don’t see gender, I just see people so there is nothing left to be done.” I have expired races all the time. My brown color makes some people uncomfortable. I speak the same the same language and eat American food with them. There are some people who I make them unforgettable. Everyone who had
First I want to say every incoming students that you made the right choice. I know it`s hard to leave your home, your parents and friends but the moments you made that choice you have to stick to that. In my opinion, the best way to adapt to American culture and environment is by attending as many clubs and organizations, and various types of events as possible.
American culture has always baffled me even though I grew up here. I never understood why somebody wants to lay around all day watching other guys play sports on TV or pore all their time and money into materialistic things like cars but not put the same kind of effort for their own bodies. Now add in nutritionally uneducated dual working parents who would rather what little time they have watching the sports channel or Dancing with the Stars then getting educated about their diet, our children are doomed.
We can learn from the past what we are not supposed to do. By learning history, we can know what will happen before make a decision and avoid same mistake. To better understand American culture, it is important to listen to voices different than our own because it helps us learned from our past mistake.
However, my feeling for American advertising is different from the American people. The way I perceive advertising reflects the way I perceive American culture. I discover it from what I read and do research, from my process of writing and how I discuss with others and ask myself tons of questions. I even come up with my own theory that it may be the culture I grew up is not the culture I am living in. I feel like I were Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby when he feels both inside and outside what is happening around him (Fitzgerald n.p.). The feeling of being in-between scared me at first because I did not know where my place in this society was; however, I learn to transform this fear into my property. Being in-between is a part of my identity
Many people like to think of America as a melting pot of all sorts of cultures, all sorts of
