Becoming an adult for me has meant gaining a better understanding of who I am and what is important to me and discovering the type of person I would like to become. This process has allowed me to celebrate my strengths, accept my weaknesses, and commit myself to making a difference in the world. The challenges I have faced include overcoming my working memory issues and discovering what I am good at and what I most enjoy. Sometimes, it seems that other students effortlessly understand everything that's put in front of them. That's not the case for me. I try extra hard at everything and try to avoid thinking my obstacles are greater than other students’. I always strive to make sure that I am doing what’s needed to offset my academic weaknesses. I seek help from my teachers and tutors, always spending the extra time needed to perfect my homework. Fortunately, my passion for reading, writing and verbal communications has paid off. While math and science are very hard for me, I’ve been able to build on my interests and do well in English and history. …show more content…
For example, when I was younger, I was required to do annual poetry recitations, and they would scare me half to death. To overcome my fears, my mother asked me to take her place as the keynote speaker at Junior Achievement in New York City. I was ten years old. As I walked to the podium on the stage of an unbelievably huge room, my knees were shaking and I could barely make it up the stairs. As I delivered my prepared speech, I could hear my voice quivering. Afterwards, though, I felt great, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my
There are five key features that characterize emerging adulthood. The first s identity exploration. The second is “Instability.” For many the instability is a result of residential changes such as living in a dorm. There is also instability in friendships, romantic relationships, academia, and work. Emerging adults have few obligations, responsibilities, and commitments. Because they have so much autonomy in controlling their own lives the third key feature is “Self-Focused.” One of the most difficult
What helped me see that have transitioned into an adult was during induction on November of this year for Alpha Phi Nu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. It was a very formal event where all the new members are called my name and they sign their name into a special book for induction. I was upstage as not just a member but as a VP of Scholarships for my chapters speaking to the new members. Sitting in the front of the stage nervous but excited to give this small speech of thanks to a choir that sang for us and saying congratulations to the new members. Being given such a huge responsibility, that I would have most likely not have done when I was younger was such a huge step for me. I was always told that sometimes adults would have to do things they
Later adulthood is the time in life when changes in marriage, families, and peer relationships are affected the most by the loss of someone close to that person. “Most people 70 years of age or older are widowed, divorced, or single” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2010, p.619). Losing a spouse or close friend can create a sense of loneliness, which causes depression, anxiety and the emptiness feeling can become overwhelming. Depression also leads to psychological effects that will deteriorate a person’s health causing the chance for a terminal disease to become much higher. The weaker appearance of older adults causes family and remaining peers to step up in the role of making sure the person’s wellbeing is being met. (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2010). Living accommodations and healthcare needs
I am in the emerging adulthood phase because I am in that age group. At first I thought emerging adulthood was the start of paying bills, and having all kinds of new responsibilities that adults usually do like car payments, applying for insurance, finding a new doctor, maybe starting a family, etc. Pretty much not being under your parents financial support is what I’m trying to say. Recently my thoughts on emerging adulthood changed. Emerging adulthood is the time to prepare and ‘evolve’ one’s self into becoming a young adult. Right after I graduated high school I wanted to have a source of income so I do not have to rely on my parents too much. I wanted to prove to them I can attend school and have a job simultaneously. I was surprised I
Emerging adulthood is the period of time when young adults are in a transition from adolescence to young adulthood. This time emphasizes change and exploration of possible life directions in love, work, and worldviews. It is the time when young adults form romantic and long-term relationships such as marriage, and when they get established in a career field. It is also the age of identity explorations, instability, possibilities, feeling in-between and self-focused.
The transition to adulthood is an important area of research because of the multitude of changes that are experienced after adolescence, including the changing achievement goals, values, and aspirations that many young adults face. In your discussion post discuss significant physical, cognitive and other related life changes that impact adults during this particular stage in life.
What is emerging adulthood? What makes young adults go through this stage, and why should it be considered a stage? Robin Marantz Henig, a freelance journalist, author, and science writer, explains in her article, “What is it about 20-somethings?”, along with Dr. Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, a psychology professor at Clark University. Henig and Arnett discuss the reasons why many 20-somethings struggle to transition from adolescence to adulthood. Arnett calls this period of time “emerging adulthood”, and believes that it should be considered a stage of life. Because many young adults go through this and feel different, emerging adulthood should be recognized as a new stage of life, as it explains to people why it is okay to transition into adulthood
There are many different cultural factors that have led to the emergence of emerging adulthood (the transition to adulthood has become so delayed and prolonged that it has spawned a new transitional period extending from late teens to the mid- to late-twenties). First, entry-level positions in many fields require more education than they did in the past, prompting young adults to seek higher education in record numbers and thus delaying financial independence and career commitment. Secondly, wealthy nations with longer-lived populations have no pressing need for young people’s labor, freeing those who are financially able for extended exploration.
Some might say that their transition into adulthood happens when they turn eighteen, as if something magically changes overnight. Being an adult consists of a more mature way of thinking and being able to overcome difficult situations. In my case, there have been several events throughout my life that, unbeknownst to me at the time, were a part of my transition into adulthood. These events would go on to include the birth of my brother and how my family moved forward in light of numerous difficult circumstances. At the time, I never saw taking care of my brother as anything particularly life changing, until recently when I was faced with having to deal with my father leaving. It was then that I realized taking care of my brother taught me much more than just babysitting
As an emerging adult Jayne states, she could not decide what she wanted to do with her life. There was not a lot of opportunities for her. She was good at school but hated it at the same time. She expressed that there were just too many directions for her to take so she did take any. Just waited for things to come to her.
In the past, the transition from adolescence to adulthood occurred very quickly. Adolescents graduated from high school or completed whatever training they needed, got a job, and married in a span of several years, officially becoming an adult through these events. However, in recent times this transition has slowed down and extended, leading to a stage known as emerging adulthood. Emerging adulthood is defined as the period from late teens to mid-twenties, when many teenagers are unsure of their future and exploring other life options.
Transitioning to adulthood is considered a period of life when young people are faced with trials of becoming part of the adult world. For some young people, this is a time to grow, an opportunity to spread their wings, and navigate through an exciting life. However, for others, the burdens that accompany the task of growing-up may be overpowering. Some may find themselves at odds and feel overwhelmed while pursuing their goals, although motivated to do so. Also, they may lack the resources or find themselves underprepared to meet the challenges that accompany those goals. Important questions come to mind when I think about young adults within today’s society: why does it seem that today's
When should a child or teenager be considered an adult ? Well I and the law both seem to think it's 18. I believe that when you turn 18 you are old enough to make your own decisions and life choices . But ignorant people like Alan Greenblatt seem to disagree and think that when you turn 21 or something you are then an adult. When you turn 18 you have finished high school are thinking about college and how you are going to spend your life .
Balancing a healthy lifestyle can be a simple task for certain individuals and difficult for others, however throughout their lives there are factors that can lead for them to experience physical illnesses or psychological disorders into their adulthood. In particular, gathering information from biological relatives can help individuals be more aware of any family member’s medical history in where they can be prepared to have any chronic illnesses or diseases. Frequent diseases and disorders are important to consider into entering adulthood due to the high risks of developing cardiovascular diseases such as cancer, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Generally, Alzheimer’s disease is ranked one of the highest leading
