The University of California and Penn State University performed research on teens in nineteen, North Carolina schools. The scientists Robert Faris and Diane Felmlee interviewed 8,000 teens about their connections with bullying. They found unexpected results. Teens just want to be recognized by the “cool” teens.

The role of a school counselor is an intriguing one because they do not work with a specific type of client. While they will always be working with young children or teenagers, the problems their clients come to them with can be so different from client to client. One session might be dealing with questions about career choices. Another might be about dealing with bullying. Some days a school counselor may even have to be there for a child who was a victim of sexual or physical abuse. It is because of this wide range of demands that a school counselor should be well-versed in many types of counseling theories.
Choosing a technique to use throughout the therapeutic process is essential to the client as well as the therapist. By choosing a particular therapeutic approach the therapist is simply implementing a tool to help navigate through the counseling phase. Therefore, without the necessary tools needed for therapy counseling would be extremely difficult for both the client and the clinician. The ability to use different techniques is also useful for those who choose a career in school counseling. Those who choose to go into the school counseling field are disposed to using techniques that help to quickly resolve a solution or one that has the ability to change a child’s thought process or behavior. Hence, many of the practices used in conventional therapy would not be practical to use as a school counselor because they may be deemed as inappropriate or ineffective to use when counseling children. Take for instance; Psychoanalysis many of the techniques used throughout Freudian therapy would not be useful for school counselors.
Staff in the school should promote positive behaviour and peer support and self esteem and social skills should be promoted with the children and young people. School counseling as always caught my attention. When I started my higher education, I had a focus on studying Elementary Education. However, after completing a college assignment for one of my psychology course, I found a very interested area in Psychology which is counseling. Since then, I have falling in love with counseling, and have spent a lot of time researching the career. I have conducted different interviews and have engaged in different counseling events that have helped me get to know the career. Therefore, when given this assignment, I felt more than prepared because I have spent a lot of time researching this career. What would teachers do without bullying? I know they really enjoy sitting in bully training where they are told the same thing repeatedly. The students’ school days would be boring, right? 32 hours of the school year is taken up by lessons about bullying. What would you do with that spare time? Well, the teachers would just give us more work. Fun. Also, bullying is a part of life. If you get bullied, oh well for you. After high school, it’s not like you’ll ever see the bully again. The bully most likely will end up in jail.
Physical bullying can result in many extreme outcomes. The bully creates dangerous physical harm to their victims and in today society EVERY victim has a breaking point and retaliates in a violent way. Victims of bullying get thoughts of suicide, cutting themselves, low self esteem, and also wanting to become a bully because its happening to them. Unfortunately there are a lot of students and staff today and parents do not feel like their schools are a safe place to go because of the types of bullying that occur.
