In “Battle Royal,” the narrator is living during the Reconstruction Era where he is fighting for equality for the African American race. During this time period, the blacks were given advice to work hard to become equal by proving their loyalty. The narrator has been invited to a battle royal to recite the speech he said for his graduation speech as the valedictorian, which is about social responsibility. The narrator believes he knows how to help the African American race gain equality, but he is follows the advice of Booker T. Washington. He finds out through his experience at the Battle Royal that his grandfather was right and needs to fight for his rights. To begin, the story starts with his grandfather, who claims to be a traitor, at his deathbed, and this is a very important scene to the story. The narrator’s grandfather plays a huge role in his life. Everyone says the narrator is just like his grandfather. He is left with a few words from his grandfather before he dies that haunt him. His grandfather’s last words were, “Son, after I’m gone I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy’s country ever since I give up my fun back in the Reconstruction” (Ellison, 1211). Many of the people in the room think he is going crazy before he dies and the parents are having the children leave the room and not listen to the nonsense he is saying.
