Introduction
Managers frequently complain that they have too much to do and too little time in which to do it. Unchecked, this feeling leads to stress and managerial ineffectiveness. In many cases, managers could greatly reduce their stress by practicing a critical management skill – delegation. Delegation is one of the most important management skills. Good delegation saves the time, develops the subordinates, fosters a successor and motivates. Poor delegation will cause frustration, de-motivation and failures to achieve the task or purpose. Actually, the best way to be promoted is to train your replacement. In this way, a supervisor can take a new position or volunteer to take on more challenging tasks without a loss in productivity. So it is obviously that delegation improves productivity but not makes supervisors out of their job.
1.6 No Confidence in Team Members
Some supervisors resist delegation because they don’t have faith in their team members. . In this case, supervisor should be sure that he himself does know the capabilities, potential, and limitations of each member so that he could select the most appropriate person for each task. In addition, supervisor should make sure that they have adequately prepared the team members for the tasks they assign. The more prepared they are, the less worried supervisor will be.
Supervisors are not the only one that may be wary of delegation. The team members may also have some anxieties of their own. Next, we will elaborate several barriers to delegation from the employee.
2. Barriers Related to Employee
If supervisors understand their team members’ trouble to accept delegated tasks, they can help them realize the benefits in delegation. Once they begin to succeed, they will be more willing to take on additional responsibilities that supervisors delegate. Here are 6 common barriers posed by team members.

The one who will delegate or prioritize tasks must be knowledgeable, skilled and competent in knowing their staff. Delegation consists of knowing the team members scopes of practice and appropriately assigning tasks for those in the team to complete in a given situation. Delegation entails knowing who can be delegated what task, proper communication of said task, and more importantly follow up of assigned task. In nursing, delegation requires the nurse to have knowledge of what he/she can delegate and to whom they can delegate. Effective delegation requires clear, concise and direct orders.
In nursing, delegation helps in making use of the talent or skills of another person. One nurse transfers interventions which are under his/her practice roles to another to another member of the healthcare team who lacks such powers authorized under their scope of practice. Delegation can only take place if it is in patient’s best interest.
Delegation is a formal process through which a regulated health professional (delegator) who has the authority and competence to perform a procedure under one of the controlled acts delegates the performance of that procedure to another individual (delegatee) (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2014).
If the nursing team isn’t working together to accomplish this task then it is the patient that ultimately suffers. Delegation can be a powerful tool to improve the patient health status or it can hinder what the health team is trying to accomplish if the wrong person is delegated the wrong task or isn’t capable of handling that particular task, the patient could suffer and even resulting in death.
Empowerment and delegation are differentiated in the way that a supervisor must be empowering in relationships with employees by delegating properly to the fullest extent of his or her capabilities. Empowerment is no more than that old standby delegation.

(Baum, 1900), leadership empowerment skills are displayed pertaining to accountability. The team players were able to recognize and accept the actuality of the situation, thus respond to the situation effectively; they were able to accept the responsibility for themselves as well as others. In conclusion, they were able implement strategic solutions to solve the problems they faced by committing to help each other accomplish their goals and accepting the risks that came along with it.
Delegation is one of the most important management skills as it empowers the team member to make decisions. However, the person who delegated the work remains accountable for the outcome of the delegated work.
Delegation is widely acknowledged to be an essential element of effective management (Yukl, G. 1994). Delegation is basically a process of assigning responsibility, sharing authority, and producing accountability in organizations. For management to make the best use of their time and skills effective delegation of tasks to the staff assists in their growth and development, builds confidence and trust, and increases the amount of work completed. The company can increase employee responsibility through delegation. If they are responsible for a task a person is more likely to ensure that it gets done and done well, even more so if the task contributes to a team effort and they can expect to receive recognition for their contribution.
Delegation of tasks was surprisingly easy as all the team members were very supportive and passionate. (Prive, 2012) Identifying the strength of my team is also a key factor in placing trusts in delegating tasks to the right person. It was also my duty to be fair to all group members of the workload they were handling. For an example, we would as a group evaluate and assess sub-tasks to see it needed more than one person to work on it.
