Delegation is widely acknowledged to be an essential element of effective management (Yukl, G. 1994). Delegation is basically a process of assigning responsibility, sharing authority, and producing accountability in organizations. It is a managerial instrument that allows managers to nurture subordinates to capitalize the subordinate’s potential and ability to meet organizational goals and objectives. As a form of employee involvement in decision-making, delegation describes a category of leader behavior that entails assignment of new responsibilities to subordinates and additional authority to carry them out (Yukl, G. 1998). In many ways, empowerment embodies principles effective managers and leaders have practiced for years. Two new driving forces in business, increased diversity and high-speed change, magnify the need for empowerment. Empowering people is now indispensable for effective personal productivity and maximum team success.
AC 2.1 Justify an appropriate process to follow when delegating work within your area of responsibility?
When delegating work within one’s area of responsibility, following process can be tracked for appropriate process (UK’s NMC’s Council, 2007) -
Treat people as individuals * Leader must treat people as individuals and respect their dignity. * Must not discriminate in any way. * Must treat people kindly and considerately. * Must act as an advocate for those in one’s care, helping them to access relevant health and social care, information and support.
Respect people 's confidentiality * Leader must respect people 's right to confidentiality. * Must ensure people are informed about how and why information is shared by those who will be providing their care. * Must disclose information if leader believe someone may be at risk of harm, in line with the law of the country in which leader is practicing.
Collaborate with those in leader’s care
Delegation…. Having the knowledge to know how to delegate efficiently is the key to advantaging yourself and increasing your importance to any company. Transferring responsibility permits you to shift from what you can do yourself to what you can supervise. Delegating tasks is one of the utmost significant and efficient managerial tools there is today. Lacking the capability to delegate efficiently and effectively, is unmanageable for you to progress in a supervisory position to an even advanced position of accountability.
Empowerment and delegation are differentiated in the way that a supervisor must be empowering in relationships with employees by delegating properly to the fullest extent of his or her capabilities. Empowerment is no more than that old standby delegation.

Imagine yourself as a nurse, you have to take vital signs, calculate I&O, assist with activities of daily living, feeding, mobility, etc., and still attend to your professional and managerial duties such as formulation of nursing diagnoses, patient education, care plan and so on. You do all this by yourself with no help and this goes on over and over again everyday! What would you do? Would you get tired of the job and try to quit? Due to the shortage of qualified nurses and the uprising increase of sick patients the need to employ the help of good and effective delegation is necessary. Delegation is an important skill needed in all organization for better management but most especially needed in the healthcare system to ensure quality of patient care. Therefore, this student is going to dig into delegation, how it can be made effective, its benefits and how important it is to learn and acquire this skill early in ones’ career. Starting off, let us look into what delegation is all about.
Effective delegation allows people to be given tasks and the authority to complete them that optimises the use of their knowledge and skills. In my opinion effective delegation requires me to be clear about the nature of the task in need a person to complete and the authority limits required to complete it successfully, it needs me to identify the right person for the task and provide feedback and support
Identify the four-step process of delegation? Delegation is frequently depicted as a four-step process: 1. Allocation of duties- duties are the tasks and activities that a manager desires to have someone else do. Before you can delegate authority you must allocate to an employee the duties over which the authority extends. 2. Delegation of authority- the essence of the delegation process is empowering the employee to act for you. It is passing to the employee the formal rights to act on your behalf. 3. Assignment of responsibility – when the authority is delegated you must assign responsibility. When you give someone rights you must also assign to that person a corresponding obligation to perform. and 4. Creation of accountability- to complete the delegation process you must create accountability that is you must hold your employee
This paper will attempt to show what skills are necessary for effective delegation, and how the managers of the author 's organization uses delegation in his or her management responsibilities. The paper will also attempt to show how delegation could be used more effectively within the four functions of management in that same organization. Through delegation managers combine task responsibilities and the authority needed to carry out tasks in the organization. The author will also discuss some advantages of delegation as well as the issue of poor delegation.

Every company has assignments that are delegated on every level within a business. Delegating is defined as giving authority and responsibility to a subordinate or an employee on a lower level. At The Plumbing Warehouse, delegating is a very important part of getting the price changes done on time. However, when leading and controlling are involved, the delegation process could use a few minor improvements. Every company must have effective delegation skills in order to be prosperous.
Empowerment goes beyond delegation by enabling individuals and teams to achieve results critical in today’s competitive markets where speed, response and customer satisfaction are the standard. Empowerment is a tool used by leadership to allow a team or an individual freedom and creativity to achieve operative or strategic goals. Final results or milestones are the measurements used to gauge success and the manager’s trust is key when empowering staff. Nevertheless, empowerment emphasizes outcomes where delegation emphasizes compliance to procedure or policy. Looking at the slight differences I feel you can delegate simple daily tasks, but to reach your organizational goals you must empower your staff when you delegate. Empowerment is seen when the staff takes ownership of the delegated task (McConnell, 1995).
Delegation seems like an easy concept, but not everyone understands it and completes it with confidence. Some managers use delegation to ensure that they are not the only ones to blame in a failure. Some managers will delegate the difficult jobs
The professional world is a very diverse form of organization and precision. Without company confidence, company respect cannot be achieved. Success is the key to productive company but it is the steps that each company takes that can make or break the life of their company. Most companies are striving to stay ahead of the technology curve while others are just simply trying to meet the demands of their current prospects. Within each organization there is a median of control. Without control there would be no function. This control can be achieved in many different ways and the most efficient way is of course delegation. Delegation can be complicated or it can be very simple. This all depends on the process of delegation and how it is enforced within the company and within the employee population as a whole. The "span of control", plays a very vital part in the process of delegation. It has become very apparent that control is key in regards to delegation. Without control there is a sense of chaos that can be very detrimental to the success of the business. Delegation is a very common term within the company that I currently work for. My company has worked very hard in order to prefect a delegation process that has proven to work for the better of the company and the employees.
